Thanks Eng.Mindset. Really useful to brush up on something I learned 30 years ago. Consider: Do a screenshot of the implementation in Excel, showing the formula in that format.
Having lived most of my life using imperial formulas and recently needing to work in metric, I find myself loving the metric system more and more. My dear ol Dad said you need to work in both so get used to it. It makes using these formulas so much easier. Great video, did you take pitch into consideration or mainly round/V belt? I may have missed that in the video but I work with timing pulleys and splined pulleys where the pitch usually is larger than the actual pulley diameter.
Thanks for the video, but I think you need to explain how you come to the last part of the first formula (pd2-PD1)² / (4xCD). My AutoCAD does not agree with you, it is close though 1675.408 vs 1675.167. Do you know where to find a formula that does it 100% correct ?
I have used the formula to calculate the center to center distance of known belt length, then tried to verify the results with 2 Different CAD Programs, and indeed it is off for me as well. when I apply the center distance between my two pulleys, then draw the belt tangent to the two pulleys, it's off... 740.391mm when I put in 740.000000000 for my belt length. Apparently, this is only an approximation, and not only this formula... but EVERY SINGLE Center distance calculator on-line that I have tried.. they are all off. I even replaced the 6.28's for Pi*2 figuring that's what they represented. I guess I'm stuck moving the pulleys a little at a time in my cad program, re-drawing the tangents, and verifying the belt length until I get it exact. I found this: www.york-ind.com/engineering/center-distance-belt-length/ It states: The approximate center distance can be found by this formula and pretty much gives the exact same formula. If there was a simple formula for this.. I think everyone would be using it
Thank you for the clear explanation and especially making provision for metric. 95% of the world uses metric but not America. Its time those guys woke up to the metric system.
There is another formula got in youtube. I checked with Ur values it gives same value Length of belt= 2x center distance bet pulleys+1.57(pulley1+pulley2) .
I have a problem, I changed belts three times but they were broken every time. plz uplad a video for adjusting and belt alignment. or belt replacing parameters and balancing method etc.
idk about u but for my class i had to get the 30 edition machinery's handbook by Erik Oberg, i think it is around page 2500 where it explains it. It's also nicknamed, " The Bible of the Mechanical Industries"
After watching this video I decided it was much easier to apply a piece of masking tape around the pulleys, cut it off and measure it. Worked like a charm!
My math skills told me that if I made a mistake and bought the wrong size belt that it would cost me a huge amount of time, effort and gas to go get another belt and only a few cents for the masking tape to be absolutely sure.
Hi, I like the style of your video. Could you explain why you have to multiply the belt length 4 times in the “Centre Distance - Metric” section. And why the 32 x and divide by 16. Thanks
hello sir, im planning to make a gear pulley but i need to calculate the belt lenght, I have a question is the pulley diameter also a pitch diameter or the outside diameter of the gear pulley?
sir can you please make a video on fire fighting design system such as how sprinklers works and how it connected to pumps, calculations. please sir it's request.
a little confused how did we do the first imperial belt calculation without knowing the centre distance and vice versa if the formula is needed of each other
This is just a guess but it seems like you would double the distance between the center of the two pulleys and then add half the pi of each pulley. Is that right? But then what do you do for fan belts like on a motor where there are multiple pulleys? My masking tape idea seems like a much better option...
That’s why I came here, seems that plan would only be accurate for pulleys that are nearly the same size. Masking tape is the practical solution though, yes.
@@sourabhparit5491 Thank you. However second pulley speed is an unknown and I am going to make custom matched stepped pulleys. I worked out the reverse method of finding the diameter of the second pulley based on belt length, diameter of the first pulley and center distance.
HI, great channel! I have a question. Can a pulley system enable a diesels engine gross maximum power to achieve a greater RPM than its rating. For instance, I have a Detroit diesel Series Model 6V-53N/T that is rated at 300 BHP (224 kW) @ 2800 RPM . that is powering a Positive displacement blower , with a maximum RPM of 3000 @ 135 BHP. Would a pulley system be a way of achieving the 3000 RPM at the pump? even though its only rated at 2800. ( 3000 RPM In order to maximize output on the blower) . Is this possible?
yes. you would need a slightly bigger pulley on the motor than the one on the blower. transferring that sort of hp would take a fairly chunky belt though or multiple belts
He made a mistake there, forgot to square the unit of length and that's why he ended up with unit/unit=% instead of unit^2/unit=unit. You can't sum up different units, but luckily the numbers he got were right.
Welcome to introduction to mechanical engineering. It’s gets much worse as you progress to certification. My first class assumed you already knew how to calculate algebraic and geometrical given the formulas. Those days may my brain hurt. Never mind when you get to trig an calc.
Not an engineer or such, but had no trouble applying this calculation and method to figure out what size belts more or less I need to replace on my 2 belt bread maker. On opening it up both belts were completely destroyed. Both of varying lengths on a 3 pulley system. Quite chuffed I managed to follow all this and get the 2 belt sizes I need 😀👍

It's because the formula they are using is derived using the small angles approximation (for angles

I'm American,
And agree with this comment 100%..🍻🍻
We woke up and chose to implement metric in 1975.
Imperial was used before metric became a thing.
Thanks for calculating formula...very useful 4me.

If I use tensioner wheel between two pulley then what is the formulae for calculating the length of belt ?
Kindly reply ASAP because its urgent

Is the pulley diameter taken from the rim or the bottom of the V groove?

You need to know one of the values or assume and reiterate your answers.

How would one calculate the diameter of a second pulley when the belt length, center distance and the first pulley diameter are known?
By considering speed of motor and speed you want toa achieve.
N1/N2=D2/D1. N is speed

C-c Length x 2 + half circumference of each pulley. Way easier approach
How to calculate for 3 belt pulley. If 2 are at same size and aligned with each other and larger one is at some distance from them ?

Why does the formula include 4x the center to center distance ???
clear as mud
Shouldnt the ( -100 mm )^2 get to be 10,000 mm^2
Sir can u explain how these formulas came from..... it would help in memorizing..
Thanks for videos ...
can just ask suppliers of the equipment they provide all

What if you have three puleys like a tensioner?
I would assume you can get close by taking half of the answer for each of the 3 center-to-center measurements.
Unit stays same... In the 3rd line upper unit becomes mm^2 and then stays mm....
if you knew already the belt length, why need to know the C-C of the pulley?
Just get the old one and buy a new one the same size 👍

Mike Craft the numbers in the formulas and string are colour coded, you should be able to follow it through
