- From Palestinian forward Ahmed Daraghmeh who was killed by the Israeli armed forces in 2022 to Serie A title winner, Italian international, and Lazio legend Luciano Re Cecconi who died in a tragic prank gone wrong in 1977, HITC Sevens takes a look at a number of often forgotten or overlooked cases in which footballers have been killed.

Andre's Esacabar is probably the most famous example his own goal for Colombia during the 1994 WC in their defeat to the USA contributed to their elimination from the tournament and he was later shot to death outside a nightclub

I still remember when news of his death broke. One simple mistake, and he was shot for it. He never had the possibility of rehabilitating himself on the pitch, e.g. by helping Colombia win the Copa América or, in the case of qualifying for France '98, perhaps score the goal that brought Colombia to the knockout stages. In the end, nothing changes the fact that this was cold blooded murder, and that his own goal in the United States was what triggered this murder. And no, even though Andrés Escobar shared the same surname as the long dead Pablo Escobar, he was no relation to Pablo.

The Senzo Meyiwa case was a massive outrage and raised alarm bells to the incompetence of our police and justice system. RIP Senzo.

Don’t forget the tragic story of Italian striker Erasmo Iacovone,who was tragically killed
in a hit and run car accident on the 6th of February,1978.
At the time,Iacovone’s team in which he was the captain,Taranto F.C,were equal 2nd in the
Italian Serie B and were dreaming of an historic promotion to Serie A.
After Iacovone’s death,the Taranto team never recovered from this tragic loss
and faded to finish mid-field at the end of the 1977-78 Serie B season and have
not come close to promotion to Serie A since.
And with the promotion of the Spezia team to Serie A 2 seasons ago,the city of Taranto
have the ‘distinction’ of being the largest Italian city never to have a team play in
the Serie A.
Another story missing IMO is that of Andrés Escobar, and how he was murdered after returning home. Back in 1994, we thought he was murdered because of the own goal and his surname (though he was no relation to Pablo Escobar), and I still feel that was the case still today. However, apparently his national team manager at the time, Francisco Maturana, said he was likely at the wrong place at the wrong time, but I don't buy that. He's still mourned and held in high regard in Colombia, especially in his hometown Medellín and his club Atlético Nacional.

In South Africa, there is a Chiefs v Pirates rivalry and I may have not liked the Senzo Meyiwa for his antiques sometimes and that he played for my rival, but the fact that there hasnt been justice for his death to this day is pretty upsetting and sad that South African football lost such a star in the form of Senzo.

Robert Enke should have been on the list. He took his live due to depression while still playing on a high level and even on the german national team. He suicide lead to a lot of discussions about depression awareness and the mental toll it takes to play soccer as a professional.
He wasn't killed, though. He committed suicide, so he'd fall under "Footballers who killed themselves" caption.

A case worth mentioning is the murder of Daniel Correa Freitas. He was a midfielder who played for São Paulo, Botafogo and Coritiba in Brazilian Serie A, who was beaten up, tortured and mutilated after attending a party and supposedly getting involved with the host's wife.
The murder happened in 2018 when he was 24.
Man, Senzo is still so terribly missed here and the still-unresolved court case doesn't help anyone from moving on ☹️

Another good pick would have been IMHO Julius Hirsch, jewish striker from Karlsruhe, still holding the record for most goals in one game for the national team, later murdered by the Nazis und only recently getting some aknowledgement.

The striker involved in the challenge never recovered either, just tragic all around... and in such a massive game. I'm surprised it isn't brought up more often.

Was it an accident? Did the gas pipe in the appartment break? Did someone kill him? Was it suicide? He was part of the legendary Wunderteam“ that thrashed Scotland as first continental team 5:0 and Hungary 8:2. The Wunderteam won 14 of 18 games, he scored 14/60 goals. After the „Anschluss“ Nazi Germany coach Sepp Herberger tried to convince him to play for the Reich, but he refused. 15.000 people came to his funeral in 1939. What a baller he was 😢…

The death of laurie Cunningham was a tragic one as he died in a car crash and was one of the first black players to make it big in the english game

He was a talented chilean striker and the reason people here in south america call the overhead kick a Chilenita. He died of a heart attack on the pitch when he was very young (early 20s)
a documentary of Borussia Dortmund and how they were extremely close to bankruptcy in 2002 time and how Bayern had to save them. The extreme difficulties the club has had to manage within to get back to where they are #thepeopleschannel

Bayern never actually saved Dortmund, the 2 million they were lent by Bayern was just a drop in the ocean of their 200 million debt. The loan was meant to cover just one monthly payroll so the club had time for their other finance measures

While it is a rather famous one, the murder of Andrés Escobar in 1994 should get a mention. He got shot for scoring an own goal in the 1994 World Cup, which might have cost the Colombian drug lords, who betted on the game, a lot of money.
But it is one of the rare instances, where a player got literally killed for a mistake, he made on the pitch.
In all fairness he said he wanted to focus on less well known cases.

Not association football, but in the NFL there was a defensive back named Pat Tillman, who joined the US Army after 9/11, putting his career on hold. He did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, joined the Army Rangers special forces, and was killed in a friendly fire. Had he fallen in combat it would be one thing, but being killed in a friendly fire incident makes his death even more tragic.

Tillman story is so upsetting. Military tried to cover up how it happened, and lied to his family privately and publicly too. Makes it even more suspicious that he was regularly writing to his brother about how illegal the Iraq war was too…
Pat Tillman’s death is made even more tragic when you realize that he believed the Iraq invasion was illegal and he was vehemently against the atrocities happening in the war. During the friendly fire incident, Tillman was shot three times in the head from less than 10 yards away, then members of his unit burned his body armor and personal notebook. Members of his unit also lied to his family at his memorial service, it didn’t come out till much later that his death was by friendly fire. Not only was Pat Tillman’s death tragic, it was also incredibly suspicious. The official report on his death also noted that was no evidence of enemy fire on the scene and no other member of the unit had been hit. That report also notes that army attorneys tried to hold off a criminal investigation, while army doctors said the wound suggested murder. Anyways, something about the tragic story of Pat Tillman doesn’t line up and as usual the US Army acted unethically.

Laurie Cunningham could have got a mention, Justin Fashanu, That Colombian player who played for Birmingham City maybe a Part 2 Christian Atsu to. Cunningham was a brilliant player and a pioneer in England playing for West Brom died in a Car Crash in Madrid.

I haven't heard of how everything transpired since the accident, from the transfer fee to court cases, but God rest Sala's soul.
