Thanks Josh! I’m so fascinated by all the retro equipment and terminology!! Also brings back memories from the early 2000’s when we had a desktop set up in our basement and the kids played games on it! Guess they were CD’s they used….geez can’t remember 😂 Looking forward to your next Vlog 🥰

UMB = Upper Memory Block. Blast from the past ... had to add that line to CONFIG.SYS a thousand times to customers' DOS PC's to get our software to work. Great videos Josh, keep them coming!

@@retrotv1tech It’s a Pentium II with a whopping 128mb :-) Have to admit I then went down an IBM Thinkpad rabbit hole - so many interesting laptops I would never have seen myself back in the day (I’m in the UK and went the ZX Spectrum > Amiga > Mac route so I mainly experienced DOS/Windows machines through friends or my Dad’s Compaq portable). All the best with the new channel!
Do you remember playing the computer game Star Flight. My dad and I would play that game when he was done with work at night. He would always give me his old disks so I can format them during the day when I was done with my homework. We would save where we would be like every 30 minutes because if you died you would start all over again at the start of the game.
I never played that one, but I’ll have to look it up! Sounds fun!

I replaced all of my old drives with SSD or with flash card and it made a great difference of course for speed and battery life.
I did this too on later videos, and you’re right… it makes a big difference. I did keep a couple on their original hard drives for nostalgic purposes.

Great vid. Not sure if I could deal with the frustrations of the older machines again (did it for a living). The Duke Nukem allows up to 8 people on a network or player vs player over modem (retro Josh has a landline, right?). Did you ever play the Sierra Online games like Kings Quest and Space Quest? Used to play in a small group.
Oh yeah... it was frustrating for a while for sure! I don't have a landline... lol. Yes... I played Space Quest and Kings Quest, but I never could figure them out as a kid. LOL. I did play multiplayer games with my brother over a null modem serial connection a few times on another PC that we eventually had!
I used to call the eraser mouse the nub. Pretty handy and keeps your hand right over the keyboard. Also REM = Remark like a "comment" in code in batch files.

I used an adapter for an USB-mouse to put into the PS2 slot. But if we have USB on the mainboard we can enable the USB legacy in the mainboard setup to use a PS2-mouse driver like the cutemouse driver with the USB-mouse. USB legacy redirect the USB mouse data into the keyboard controller like a PS-mouse.

30:00 Did you find a way to stretch the games to fullscreen? I have a Toshiba 200CDS from the same era and it's quite frustrating not to be able to use the whole screen.
Yes. There’s a program called vexp.com that I found on Vogons that allows you to stretch the screen to fill the entire area. However, it does make text look a little glitchy due to primitive scaling, but I don’t mind it.
I’m using a hp compaq mini 110-1100 as a retro gaming machine it’s running windows xp so ittl play everything back to dos and super portable. I would like to get a book8088 but they are pricy

The volume control on the side of these machines is know to fail and be static ridden... de-oxit is your friend...

Were you not too into laptops back in the 90s? The power supply is obviously internal and IR was popular for PDAs.
EDIT: Also you thought the floppy drive connected to the PCMCIA card?
EDIT: 95% of PCMCIA cards required a dongle.
I never had a laptop until 2002, but this was one of my first videos, and I’ve learned a lot since then. I now know that some early laptops had internal power supplies and some had wall warts (external). Also, I don’t think I tried to connect the floppy to the PCMCIA card, but I know I did eventually find the port. Look at some of my newer laptop videos. :-)

I think Windows 98 SE is much better than Windows 95.
I agree, but I think it would make this PC way slower overall because it’s only 120mhz.
@@retrotv1tech W95 is more unstable with an index of crash per hour. hehe
I made a zip-Archiv of a fresh installed Windows with all drivers installed (-+200mb) and i put it on an other drive letter. If Windows crashed or is slower by the time i boot from a floppy disk and format the drive with Windows and then i unzip the archiv to the drive. Now we can boot a fresh Windows installation again. This works with the same hardware, but not when the mainboard changed for example. But before we do this we have to safe our game files with the saved world, emails ect.. Only for W95, W98,Wme. On the bootable floppy disk we can put the format and sys command.
