The stories are so heart wrenching. The four children in one family washed away. The 81yo man could only sit and watch his house wash away with his 12yo blind dog inside. Makes me wish I would've won the big lottery so I could help those that lost so much. 🙏🙏🙏
Pray that Kentucky repents for how they've treated Blacks. Breonna Taylor was murdered and the murderers were not punished. And I think Carol Bryant lives there. She helped kill Emmit Till. Lock her up and Breonnas murderers to escape God's wrath
I live in Kentucky but not near the area affected. I was in two floods as a little child and remember trying to help my mom scrape mud off the walls and floors. My aunt is close to this area. Around 30 years ago she and her husband barely got out of their house when flood waters took it off the foundation and slammed it against the side of the mountain. My heart goes out to all those affected by this.
Is this kind of normal in kentucky or is it more of a rarity? What causes it?
@@heathersinclair2279 it depends some on the location. Many of the places in eastern Kentucky are very mountainous with narrow deep valleys and steep slopes. When there is a significant rain it can run down the mountains and cause massive flooding in a very short time. I think this area got about 10 inches in a short time but there it was like getting twice that much in a more level terrain. Where my Aunt was they had a tiny stream, that is normally only a few inches deep. But in just a few hours the water was over their home. There is minor flooding on /off but this was not a normal flood event. The one with my aunt was over forty years ago and not in the same place but close

I went through hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico an believe me it changed my life forever an most people make me sick now that I appreciate so much more than I did before. God help us all. I agree with the person who said if they hit the lottery they would help these people. I guess that’s why I have little because I give always. Just sad I’ve given to some of the wrong people in my lifetime.

Am I wrong or has Mitch McConnell stayed in DC and said nothing in public about this tragedy in the state he represents while at the same time torpedoing all legislation aimed at trying to address climate change related disasters like his floods but also extreme heat, fires, storms, drought, famine, melting glaciers etc. ?

that drone footage at the beginning show the destruction and I am quick to note that one house had CMU blocks that were not filled with concrete, meaning I could have ran into the wall with my body and knocked it down. some of these deaths are a direct result of poor construction practices. God rest the souls of the dead.

NOT EVEN Hurricane/tornado straps. I would have driven 1" rebar stakes a few feet into the ground inside the blocks before filling with cement. And then lag bolting the trailer to the anchors. These people were "camping". You build/by on a floodplain river bank expect to get wet. Send them more prayers, we all see how well those work. LOL

So I’ve lived in KY all my life. I’ve noticed when we go through a bad drought it precedes or is followed by all the rain we were supposed to get during the drought. It’s like it all comes at once. Prayers

Well, in the first place gov Beshear is not in this clip at all, but you still took the opportunity to try and make an issue about his frequent presence at this disaster. Those who buy/build on a floodplain river bed should expect to get wet, keep a Zodiac fully stocked and at the ready, *BEFORE* the 60" flat screen or Xbox, and build on stilts.
I have a sister and she's a grandmother with all their kids out there, but Western Ky. they're fine.
She's not bright, she was in Tenn. before Ky.
I've lived all over the country and been to a dozen countries. When it came time to settle down and plant roots I did so in a place that can't flood, earthquakes are not tectonic plates or fracking, not in a pine oil forest, my jungle isn't gonna burn. We have to pour gas on stuff to get it started here. And hurricanes avoid a monolith so protected by that geological attribute, plus if sea level rises we have 2 miles plus of elevation to move up to.
For the last quarter century I've watched all the prayers in the world not stop tragedies happening to "poorly educated" peoples in the U$ and around the world.

Senator Rand Paul is a well known Libertarian. I'm curious, for the people of Kentucky to receive state and federal aid in the form of temporary shelter and or financial assistance to rebuild their lives, would that be in conflict with Senator Paul's political ideology?

According to historical documents, there were devastating floods here in 1918, 1946, 1957 and now. There were only 37 deaths in the 1957 flood, but what was the population? These places that are known to be killer flood plains are rebuilt, repopulated...then tragedy strikes again & will again.
I feel so much sadness for the families of people lost and missing. As a resident of the Gulf Coast, I've watched as after every devastating hurricane, they quickly rebuild in its path, waiting and gambling on how long until it happens again and how many lives will be lost when it does. But it's their right to do so.

Your perspective of the nature of this disaster and the region's past history of disasters is rather myopic as it ignores that countless other places around the country that also have a long history of disasters. You as a coast guard person should be well aware of that. Just seven months ago western Kentucky was hit with their worst tornado outbreak killing 89!!
People have to live somewhere and there is some risk no matter where they live. They should be aware of that risk wherever they choose to live.
If you look at flood maps in all these areas. The houses are out of the flood area. The last flood was in 77 and it wasn't this bad. 57 flood in whitesburg was more then 10 feet lower then this time. I don't see fema moving flood zones either. It's going to take gofund me and other donations for people to get anything back. We had a house fire and the cost to hire a truck and drive hour half one way to the dump was 6x what my insurance would allow. It was a fight. Brashear still hasn't paid our on unemployment benefits after he shut business down. I'm looking for people to not get that federal help. I bet it will go to schools and places he dems good. Fema has lots of hoops to get assistance and it won't cover much of nothing.

FYI There are over four million people living in Kentucky twice the population of New Mexico where I live and many other states.
Kentucky has a similar geography to other states in the region like Tennessee and beyond and this flood could have happened in any number of other places in the eastern US.

Sad, but the SADDEST thing is that the vast majority of them support Trump, who says that global warming is "fake news".
There were devastating floods there in 1918, 1946, 1957, and now. Those are ones recorded and I'm sure there were ones before that unrecorded. The difference, the horror, is the population growth. Global warming had nothing to do with it. It happens when a hurricane tracks up from the Gulf into than 3 river convergence there. Also when a big midwest storm carrying lots of rain, like this one does the same. They're big rivers, and Hindman is in their floodplain.
