    I see Louis used a fix I messaged on stream live chat AND e-mailed him about a few months ago :-). Louis didn't believe me Dx. I've been having to re-flash the T2 chips on many machines to revive them after failed software updates, and to make Command + Option + R actually work right and install Catalina on a machine that came with Mojave or High Sierra out of the box. What a pain. About 95% of my cases have not involved losing data on the machine. The rest rendered the machine needing an OS re-install.
    Louis, for the DFU restore, once the Mac begins showing the Apple logo with the loading bar, then reboots and shows a loading bar with time remaining, you can unplug the USB/Thunderbolt cable. The machine does not need to be tethered to complete the pending OS update. Apple Configuration 2 doesn't get signaled that the T2 chip has actually rebooted with the LATEST firmware, and thus times out. Also... the charging cable the Mac comes with works fine as the DFU process runs over USB 2.0. You don't need to buy another cable.
    If Apple were smart, they would make the T2 chip be capable of re-flashing itself through Internet Recovery. So their machines don't brick like this. Or you know... do what everyone else does and have a read-only backup boot partition for booting off of in emergencies.

      I’m too interested to understand much more on the topic.

    • @SGCSmith
      @SGCSmith 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@user-vv4tl6mp8x I know very little about why it happens. Other than it being caused by OS updates. Apple doesn't seem to have built in enough redundancy into the T2 chip to keep the issue from happening. I mean. Most modern BIOS have backup boot blocks in case of a bad flash.

    • @dennis_johnson
      @dennis_johnson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in a similar situation with a bricked a1989. Tried to re-flash with Configurator2, but the dead MacBook is not recognised on the tool. The host MacBook (mid-2012) is running Catalina 10.15.7, so I'm not sure if there is a compatibility issue with that.

    • @SGCSmith
      @SGCSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennis_johnson In theory the DFU mode should work regardless of what is on the SSD, as the code for that lives in the ROM inside the T2.
      In some cases I've had Macs go brain dead and fail to turn on even after performing an SMC reset. Just like this even. If you have the tools to open the Mac and disconnect the battery for a few minutes, do that and then see if you can enter DFU mode. Or if the machine turns on normally afterwards.
      But yeah, new year, newly released OS, once again the bricked T2 chips show up.

    I repaired hundreds of failed bios-es on PC and almost always I was able to do it with simple dual bios/USB/floppy/cd methods. Just in handful occasions I need to use external flashing with donor board and hot-swapping. This Apple method isn't so bad in comparison to older pc ways but on modern PC MBs dedicated USB port with a flash button is a king.

    Louis, give yourself at least some credit. I think you could have figured it out using just a bit of logical deduction. If it's not a hardware problem/user-caused liquid damage, then it must be software. T2 failure it is! Either way, you have a business that you can be 100% proud of. Now, have a great weekend, and get yourself a cookie!

I got this laptop to test some FX software that exists only on Macs.

They replaced the logic board and display which took ages as the first board was DOA. I suspect what you highlighted on this video was the issue. This is shonky and awful.
