I just finished a Rusty Rails HO scale barn which came out great with a lot of that casting detail. Have only painted the barn before assembly and haven't painted all the details yet. I also have the little truck with the log load to build & paint. Thanks for all the tips. I'll have to tear myself away from building rolling stock from Tichy Train Group. I love building Don's kits. Cheers from eastern TN
Well once again I had to slow way down on my train work because of the crazy past year and half and my health , but I'm back and as before I find I watch your channel more then another's. As before I'm amazed at the detail you get with your work. I have learned a lot in the past and used a lot of that information, but still don't get the detail you do. I see from this video you talk about patient and the time spent on the castings. I think that has to be something I work harder on. I have improved thanks to you, but still have more to do. Thanks for putting out great quality work and videos.I'm back working on my layout and will start following you more closely again.
. The best part of your channel is watching the joy expressed on your face and your voice. You really do love this work. Makes it all the better for us viewers. Be well
Hi Jason you make me discover Rusty Rails castings last year and they are so great and fun to paint, and its good that you made a vidéo on paintings those castings. Its vers helpful thanks again.
An exceptional video by a truly talented modeler. His attention to detail is truly amazing. He has a great eye for detail and is very talented with a paintbrush.
I have a couple more boxes of HO for you coming soon. I am painting details today and learning a great deal from you. Thanks for helping all of us model railroaders be better at what we do.
From your earliest days Jason, I have been an inspired subscriber of yourself, so much so I have bought most of the DecoArt craft paints that you ever used, not to mention purchasing in excess of $300 worth of resin products from Rusty Rail. You are then asking the question, "So what and Why?" First, DecoArt is an American product and I live in Scotland and because, in your early days Rustyrail were used extensively by yourself. You are an inspirational artist, even beyond the skills of Luke Towan, and motivate the likes of myself in modelling . Anyway, today you have added the video I have been waiting on. How to paint them Rusty Rail resin products. Thank you so much and no, I am not going out to buy Ammo products because I have run out of space. However, you could answer this question - "Do you follow the same process and procedures in painting resin products and paint white metal castings in the same way? Take care and congrats on reaching 25000+. Best regards, Mike
Just letting you know that my 1st of many comments on your channel was made by myself on 16th July 2019. From those early days you have come alongway and are always my "go to" whenever I get stuck. Thank you, once again. Mike
Thank you so much Mike!!! I really appreciate your continued support! Yes I follow the same process for both. Thank you so much for watching buddy and happy modeling!!!
Hi ya Jason, I thought that was a lot of casings for that one garage. Beautiful kit, beautiful castings. And, as always, a masterful job of painting, rusting, weathering, and washing. Thanks for another outstanding tutorial. Take care. See ya next time.
Awesome Jason. You are a mind reader. I broke out my box of Rusty Rail castings today and then here I find this gem of a video. Love his castings and his friendly service. Great job on the video. I have found that if you find your self obscuring details with primer try a can of Tamiya Gray primer...or Testors. I believe the pigment is ground finer and preserves details. Other wise I use Krylon Camo primers. Keep up the good work sir. Dr John Sherwood Falcon, Colorado
That looks like a fantastic kit. All the little details look great but the interior of the shed is just unbelievable, incredibly realistic and natural. That wee truck is another highlight, especially after such skilled painting. The glass in thecab looks better than real glass, or clear perspex, and comes across as dusty and dirty. One thing I thought of; would a cleaner bit, where the windscreen wipers have cleared it, be a possibility? 😁
That is going to be an awesome kit if it contains all of those castings. Wow. As usual, I continue to learn a lot from your videos. Thanks for doing these. Keep up the great work. Larry.
Jason, you're an amazing, talented and above all a humble person, you're one of the very few on TH-cam who all of their contents are so entertaining to watch all the time, it's always relaxing to watch you work my friend, so thank you for your work mate.
Fantastic video, Jason. This one is especially timely, because I just received my '34 Ford pickup and '26 Mack log truck from Rusty Rail. Can't wait to try out your techniques!
Jason will you be making your kits also in oh scale as my railway is three rail O scale very interested in some of your kits hopefully you will do them o
Thanks Jason, once again you have given us great tips on being better modelers. I will be going back over some of my castings to see if I can improve on them with the things you have shown here.
Fabulous video Jason, all those little details really makes models and dioramas come to life. I'm in the middle of moving house with a room specifically for my layout, I've missed it so much. As always thanks for sharing.
Eres el amo, lastima que esos kits aquí en España no son accesibles, pero alucino y aprendo mucho con tus videos, muchas gracias (lo próximo será aprender ingles) saludos.
Amazing paintwork! I just finished a Transformers diorama and the painting techniques you've taught here on your channel were invaluable to me. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Congrats on 25K! You are the master! I’m glad I watched to the end…don’t have to purchase those detail parts separately! Can’t wait for your CCK kit. My only suggestion…next time you decide to paint your nails, chose a color that brings out the color of your eyes….🤪
I loved every minute of it! Great work and thank you so much for the detailed explanations. I also enjoyed not having any music. That´s much more relaxing, as well. Made me feel just like when I am in my workshop enjoying myself. Cool stuff!
Great tutorial on a lot of hand painting techniques. I have a number of Rusty Rails castings awaiting paint when it cools down a bit in my attic. I will also be using your vehicle painting techniques on making a pristine Land Rover into a representation of my own - fifty shades of green! ;-) Cheers
I certainly don't want to teach granny to suck eggs - I watch your channel to learn stuff! But I stick a galvanised nail with wood glue to my castings - not something you would do if you actually wanted it to stick permanently - and it just peels off when I'm done.
You do an awesome, amazing job with painting. Always comes out looking fantastic. On one of the long walls there's a piece you painted blue that looks like thick, round discs stacked on each other with the size of them getting smaller as they go up. I think that is a part from a belt driven lathe where the belt mounts to, to get the different speeds for the spindle. It wouldn't be blue it would be a dark metal color with some lite rust I'm sure from sitting where it is. But it doesn't matter cause no one will notice it once the building is put together and if they do see it most people wouldn't know what it is or study it long enough to figure it out anyway. Just something I noticed. Don't know why I thought it was so important I had to write a story about it but I did. LOL! Great video. Love your techniques and tips. Stay well. -Wil 👍
Thank you so much William, I really appreciate it!!! Good to know on that part. Sometimes I get in to big of hurry and just start painting everything. LOL!
I love this channel, your work is amazing and you have so much passion for the Hobby! Congratulations on surpassing 25K I'm sure your next 25 will come quickly! :):)
Jason I too have been using the Ammo Dry Brush paints from the time they came out. As you said lots to different things to use them (just not dry brush). As time goes by even though the cost is a lot more than craft paints I think the quality of the Ammo paints will in some cases replace the use of craft paints. Look at the rust set. their colors are spot on & craft paints you can get close. Just me thinking out loud
Hi Jason - I LOVE your videos. I follow each and every one. I flipped when I saw Eagles Landing and tried my best to get one - to no avail. Then last week I saw that Carolina had one for sale and I grabbed it. Still has not arrived but I'm excited. I noticed it is EL 1 & 2. Of course I watched the Eagles Landing video. How does the 1 & 2 kit differ? Also - I need some FOS help. I love Doug's stuff and he has been very kind to me - sending an autographed kit so I can make a shadow box, I bought one of the Pier kits and it was missing a long wall. I know eventually Doug will send it to me, but I want to make one myself. The materials the wall is made from is that white kind of particle board Doug uses in his kits when the wall is to be covered or stuccoed. What is that material and where can I buy a sheet? Again - thank you so much for all the joy you bring to us in the World's Greatest Hobby!
Thank you so much Scott!!! And thank you for watching! The material is called task board. Sounds like you have a lot of great modeling ahead of you. Have fun !!!
Jason, Another terrific job. I've got two questions. How would you handle the trucks windows as smashed, cracked, or partially opened glazing? On a destroyed/distressed junker I would have expected such damage and weathering. Second, had you considered a skylight (or at least half a roof glazing) on your garage structure? Then, using interior LED lights, a viewer can peer into the building to get a better look at your artistry. I'll keep watching, not only for your superb tutorials, but for your upcoming Carolina Crafts deal. ~Jim
As always the video is full of great technics to make things look real. I understand viewers are shown what you use but wonder if anyone notices how you use your brush and fingers to support during application of the medium. Have a quick question if you had an acrylic wash what would you use to thin it. Is a enamel wash better?
Thank you so much Will!!! You can thin acrylics with water. I like the enamel wash because the black seems darker even after you thin it with the thinner. Always great to hear from you Will. Have a great day!
Thank you so much David!!! I order directly from Ammo. You can do a google search for distributors in the US and order from them. It’s such a great product!!!
Loved the Video (as always) great techniques for highlighting all those details, questions, when are you going to get around to pouring the water in your harbour ???? Lol - keep them coming - please 👍
Hi Jason, awesome job once again on all the casting paint schemes. You always seem to make the kits look so real, I noticed on the truck that you did not paint the windshield or glass panels but rather left them in primer base coat. Is this normal or do you have any other special techiniques on painting these types of castings? Thanks again, love your videos. They show many great methods in detail.
Great timing Jason, I have a selection of these castings to paint & your video was brilliant (as always) A small favour if I may...next time you chat to your friend at KcWorkshop could you ask him if he could look at shipping Internationally?? I tried emailing but had no luck...would dearly love to get access to his range especially the shingles & corrugated roofing here in Australia..His products combined with your skills make a winning combo...Cheers Scott
Masterpieces Jason. Excellent Work. I always wanna build or paint something after I saw a Video. I use a black wash from tamiya, also not bad but it smells heavy. Sadly I cannot order your Kit, because the Shipping costs will be horrible I bet. Happy Modelling from Germany.
On all my vehicles (cast resin, plaster, even plastic) I paint all the windows a color called Gun Metal (Testors) I do this because it's not Black or Blue. It's in between the Two. Also ALL my vehicles windows are painted this way. Consistency is key. All headlights I paint light Ivory and tail lights a dark red.
Another great video. Really learned a lot. But it took you three days. I thought at your speed it would be three hours. I guess it will take me 30 days. Ouch.
I thoroughly enjoy this channel and you have taught me a lot of good information. Well presented and well narrated. Thanks but.... Don't you think you have misnamed the channel though? Surely it should be JJ Wonderful Buildings or JJ Wonderful town building as I've followed you for a year or so and think I've only seen a train run maybe once and that was only back and forth? :)
I left mine the grey primer then put a light wash of white on the bottom half. I then brush on a GLOSS clear coat over the windows. Hope this helps! Happy modeling!!!
Jason: Great video except for all the annoying ads. Question did you leave the windows as is on the truck and do you suggest when painting the truck would you try to keep the paint strokes on the body going the same way/
Great video as always. I searched right though the comments to find the constructive criticism that went along with the thumbs down. No luck. If there’s something so annoying about your video that it merits a downvote, why doesn’t the troll leave a comment to tell you what was wrong? Downvotes without an accompanying comment really bug me. Keep,up the fine work, mate.
Thank you so much Ron!!! I really appreciate it! I completely agree with you. If you give a thumbs down tell me what you didn’t like. O well, I’ll just keep making videos and trying to improve! Thanks for watching buddy!!!
.... I though that you took some time off...... You should buy a 3D printer for all your casting, it might get cheaper in the long run. ha ha Great gig man
I just finished a Rusty Rails HO scale barn which came out great with a lot of that casting detail. Have only painted the barn before assembly and haven't painted all the details yet. :)
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! More trains will be coming soon. Thanks for watching!!!
what do you do about the windows on the truck ?
Jason: Another question does ammo Drybrush paints come in a set? What is a good source to buy ammo paints?
A company called "spraygunner" is a US distributor and ships fast.

Jasen do they have a kit of hospital and a funeral home in 1/64 scale ?
.... I though that you took some time off...... You should buy a 3D printer for all your casting, it might get cheaper in the long run. ha ha Great gig man
