But Mirai DOES have meaning and purpose behind it. It’s a fine-toothed exploration of family lineage, growing up and learning to become a better parent/sibling. It is deep, in the thematic sense, that depth just isn’t obscured behind an overtly fantasy/sci-fi premise.

I think what Joey’s implying is that there’s no tangible objective. No mission, no quest and nothing for the character to win. At least when you compare it to Hosoda’s other work, like Summer Wars.
It’s all emotional. Which is a journey for the character, so it’s a plot, rather than storyline.

I have to disagree as it was fairly obvious to me while watching that the anime was not only about early childhood, but also parenting and family ties. Yes, it's presented in a very abstract and even confusing way when you start watching the film but as the film progresses you start to see the message behind it. Hell, you even mention it on the video so you can tell what the meaning behind it is. That's why i find it odd that you choose the words "Absolutely nothing" just because it's not a grand adventure or your typical anime film. Sounds a bit derogatory, which probably wasn't your intention but it really does.

I just saw the movie and I agree with what you say, growing up, parenting and family are huge themes. They may not seem spectacular, but they are what makes up most of our lives. I thought they were done imaginitively and movingly.

Yeah I agree. I don't agree with this video at all. I feel like you're defining "nothing" by the standards of other anime's and not structure of storytelling. Even though you believe "nothing" isn't bad I feel like we're conflating meanings here. I'm referring to more specifically 5:13 where you say he's telling a story about nothing. Well... he's not. Just because there is no grand adventure, villian, high stakes, external motives doesn't make it nothing or somehow less profound even though we all agreed that it doesn't make it worse. At 5:55 I think you saying that the movie isn't deep or doesn't have anything to say of importance is completely missing the mark. I think this whole review is just really missing the mark to be honest and I didn't even love this film like that. I enjoyed it though.

I thought this anime had a message - family and love. Hosoda’s movies are always through the lives of family and accepting others and accepting yourself. In general, people don’t usually watch films or anime to find meaning in the end. They watch it simply for entertainment. When it does have a moral to the story, it doesn’t have to be that deep for it to be good.

What I love about most of Hosoda movies is that almost all of them have some real-life aspects to his family life. Such as with his recent latest one, Mirai for example is actually named after his young daughter who share the same name as the title movie! :) I seriously think that's just so sweet and lovely, I'm real excited for this new charming film within the Hosoda series.

I truly enjoyed Mirai. I'm not sure I agree that Mirai wasn't a deep movie. I found it to be incredibly deep and moving. It is not only about a child's imagination and seeing new things through a child's eye, but also has a mysterious undertone such as the bit about Kun's great-grandfather. Did he get visited by his grandfather's spirit? Or was he just imagining things from seeing those photos? It's left up to the viewer to interpret - that to me, is the meaning of "deep". The journeys he took and the metaphors involved were also very deep. Good review though. It was a fantastic movie.

Watching as a dad, I probably have a very different perspective. I find the movie to be a magical journey of Kun as a 4 yo in accepting his role as an older brother. The arc is your typical hero’s journey where Kun finds himself facing a challenge of having a sister and losing his “importance” in the family. It is seriously fun to see how Kun learns about how to ask for a bike and getting motivation to learn to ride it. I always wonder what is happening in my son’s world. So this story really hits deep for me.

Friend took me to see this last Thursday, when he asked me what my thoughts were I told him I interpreted it as a rather confused plea to address Japan's population troubles (starting with showing how awful children can be and naming the baby, "Future"). After some more thought I boiled it down to: there needs to be decedents (children) to remember the deeds of the ascendants (everybody before them). Of course the parts that really stuck out to me were Older Mirai taking Kune through the family tree and the story of their grandfather. It is no small thing realizing what your ancestors may have gone through so you can be here right now.
I'm also going to remember his advice when I take a very important driving test, so I don't start looking down nervously at the gear shift.

  • @AnimeTopScholar
    @AnimeTopScholar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I mean, making a movie that takes a look at family and growing up doesn't really have no meaning. It's just not an epic with high stakes. I often find that more grounded anime can be equally as amazing as something with a much more grand story. Hell, my favorite anime is Aria the Animation and I talk to plenty of friends who don't understand why I like it so much since it's just a boring show that just goes from point A to point B and ends. But where they find nothing to enjoy, I find a bunch of small things in the world, the characters, the references and basically everything that makes me appreciate that show more and more everytime. SO yes I agree, a show does need to "be about something", but I also think that whether a movie has meaning or not is determined by what is the more intelligent or epic story.

When I'd usually be the one to protest and defend the case that, even if the animation was bad, the story can make up for it, because that is what you normally see being said if you're showing something like a show or a movie.
But in this case, it's simply made into a beautiful light animation that you just enjoy watching - and there is nothing wrong with that.
I love how that movie looks like, as it's simple, clean and pure. Be it someone who is older or younger, you can still hook yourself to it and enjoy it.
Not everything needs to be catered with action or deep plot, sometimes you can simply make things that other people can enjoy too - as you mentioned like a family, who can just sit down and watch something together.
I've always had a thing for this kind of animation as it's simply fun and beautiful to watch, even if in the end you don't get a big revelation of something astonishing.
If you're not someone who has the attention span of a toothpick then I'm certain that more than enough people can enjoy Mirai!

Uhh you forgot one point here. Hosoda tends to focus on relationships esp the familial ties. Summer Wars, Wolf Children, Mirai to name a few. I won't particularly call it a film with no meaning. If anything, it focuses heavily in family and how we should get back on our photo albums and rediscover our roots and try to enrich them. This is just my opinion.

Saw Mirai last week and I loved it. I turned to my friends after it and just said that was nice, it just made me feel warm inside which I think was the desired effect. Nothing complicated nothing mind blowing just something we all have in common the experience of growing up, and for the older members of the audience the experience of parenthood to an extent. I don't think anything NEEDS to be complex and have deep emotional climaxes to warrant praise. I get equal enjoyment out of simple stories that feed me all the information however trivial, as well as topics that really make you think and try to get you to read between the lines. In the end Mirai is a movie I would happily recommend to seasoned anime viewers or people dipping their toes for the first time for an easy rainy sunday afternoon of relaxation with the whole family!

To answer that question, no. No it doesn’t.
Stories don’t always need to be deep or complex in order to be good. Sometimes the best stories are the more simple ones. A good example of this is Harry Potter. It’s a great book series with a dynamic cast of characters and hugely successful, but when you get right down to it, it has a simple story of good vs evil and there’s nothing wrong with that.

The movie reminds me of The Yamada’s” and “Only Yesterday”, simple but sweet. The story development lies through the pov of a small child needing attention. No matter how mundane and nothing it is to adults/teens and the viewers who expect plot twists, fantasy world adventures, incredible life altering character development, etc, to a kid, practically a toddler.. growing up, every attention, interaction and it’s consequences is as adventurous as it gets. It is just about a family trying to juggle around and raise a first born and a newborn. The movie is trying to depict everyday life of raising kids despite the couple’s parental setbacks, a sister from the future who wants to find the root cause and understand how they came to have an awkward sibling relationship, but with whimsical flair. It is understandable that is it not everyone’s cup of tea, and not every teen or young adult is interested in a story about couples, family life and especially brats close to their age.. but that’s what the author chose to focus on. Not every kid is an adorable or charming angel like those in popular single parent+kid manga/anime. Turns out the movie is still very well executed, just that not many weebs can be that interested in the reality of child rearing without having it turn into full Maquia. At the end of the day it is as boring to you as what you like is as boring to someone else.

It was such a blast to watch and really entertaining. It gets very abstract at times though, which I really enjoyed, but I don't think everyone would be able to appreciate as much. My partner left the theatre going "wth what was with all of this" and felt the film needed more of a solid explanation, though I disagree.

I just think of Hosoda movies as his artistic update of how is life as a husband/father is going, like this one was about him doubting himself as how adequate he is as a father and what awaits beyond.

As an artist, we talk about if art needs to have a meaning to be considered real art. It's my belief that it doesn't necessarily need a meaning, but to serve a purpose. Making someone happy or making something beautiful is enough.

while i dont know if Mirai no mirai got any deeper meaning, it's a very real depictions of a struggle of a young spouse raising their kids, and also the believable POV of a first born feeling jealous not being the only kid anymore. it wasn't for anyone but is definitely for those thinking to have kids

Anime that I’ve watched with a plot of basically nothing:
    Tsukitte ii Na Yo
It’s about nothing more than two high school students finding love, and manifesting that love through hardships. Very common plot but at the same time, this anime makes it very basic, and not to the extent of dragging it into the realm of deeper meaning.

Meaning is honestly the last thing I'm looking for in anime. I go to it for entertainment first, then characters, music, visuals, maaaaybe a decent plot... and then, if there's time for it, deep meaning... but meh... absolutely unnecessary.

I did not have high expectations after last years feature was Fireworks... but man this film was amazing. Everyone should give it a try if you like wholesome comedy and just wholesome family moments.

I think it has as much meaning as anything else in a way. It's one that delves into family and the feelings of what it is to be in a family. Everyone has one and I think being able to beautifully portray that in a movie is a feat on it's own. Its cathartic in a way that makes you realize despite all the troubles a family may have, there's this quiet underlying beauty in having a family that we don't think about often. Like yeah we all know family is important and we recognize it more on holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas or whatever holiday you have in your country. But still, as important and obvious family is, to have the essence of it so beautifully portrayed is something remarkable on it's own. It's why films are necessary, because no matter how obvious a theme may be, we forget by nature. It's what Plato or Aristotle said why plays are important if I remember correctly. They remind us because we forget, and they provide catharsis which is just as important. So I think the film succeeds by just providing a warm reminder, delivering catharsis in times that are difficult. I think that's just as important and meaningful in it's own way.

  • @someguy7703
    @someguy7703 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Not having any meaning is something completely normal, becouse life doesn't have meaning. And that's why you need to give meaning to it yourself. So if something doesn' have meaning, just give it one yourself by just thinking about it. The film Joey talks about can just as well be given the hidden message: "everyone needs to grow up and accept change and spend time with your family."

Every piece of literature has a meaning in it. It doesn't have to be a philosophical question, a message or a character study. It can also just be there to offer more perspective and insight. It just depends on what is the main purpose. Cause some shows put themselves a goal to ask a question or give a certain lesson and some have that at the sidelines. Sometimes really far back. If its obvious a show is trying to scream something at u but it does it bad or screams at gibberish than yeah it'll be fucking bad if the show is like ok now imma tell a good story with characters etc and i have some things I can pass to u but I don't really mind about doing so especially rn. Ofc a "deep" show needs to have good characters and story and a lot of times they come together but I'm just saying that a show doesn't have to put itself the goal of passing a certain thought to u for it to be good.

I think that every good story will have a good meaning, but a good meaning doesn't necessarily have to be "deep", "philosophical" or "sociological", the meaning is deep in everyone's mind and will make people to somehow think about his/her life. In this sense, Mirai in the future said a simple story, but it does touch many people, it does make people rethink of the relationship between children and parents, and this is how it has a good meaning.

I really liked and enjoy "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" I thought it was cute and somewhat sad. It also has a life action version, which is very different than the anime version.....I liked the anime more and felt more attached and connected to the main character Makoto, and it was fun to see her adventure and story unfold. However, I don't think an anime always has to have a deep meaning or important point behind it in order for you to enjoy it....

  • @3LDCreations

I think *"Anime"* should have a meaning inside it... It may be simple but should have....
*Story Writing* - According to me, it is art of portraying *Author's* Ideology and his imagination.
I can watch Anime with no important plot or dept, but author should be capable of portraying story in a fun and enjoyable way.. If he fail to do so., then it will end up in trash category..
    *Hope it made sense*

the title of the video is a clickbait,
Mirai of the future: a beautiful Movie about growing up as an older brother
it's simple, but not absolutely nothing, even if you watch a movie of a blank white screen for 1,5 hours, you end up thinking about life, you start questioning "what am I doing here?, is this all things that matter in my life?"

A movie about life is not about absolutely nothing, but I do agree that anime doesn't need a deep meaning. I mean, just look at the amount of slice of life anime there are and how much of a big hit it made on even people in the West. Anime like this is important.

This is almost exactly how I feel about K-On.
I love watching all these bombastic action/shounen, chilling horror/psychologicals and beautiful drama/romance anime, but sometimes... I just need something chill and relaxing to watch. And for me, the go-to anime for that is K-On. It's just a group of girls, doing almost nothing except for drinking tea, having snacks and occasionally playing music and sometimes, that's just what I need to relax.

I agree that it doesnt really need to have a meaning to be good but the meaning if an important factor for whether I would share it with my friends or not... For example, I would share Your Name and not Wolf Children to my buddies because Your Name has a good plot and deepness. Meanwhile wolf children is just the idea of growing as a wolf and human.
