Hi! I am an advanced cellist but may have been doing vibrato wrong for a long time. can you clarify: 1. how much does the pad of the finger move when pressed against the fingerboard? is the vibrato simply rotation?? I learned to make my finger move inline, but the pad of the finger stays against the board and you can actually see the pad (callouses ) stay in position while the finger kind of moves, as though in two units. I hope I'm making this easy to under stand? I never had a teacher and so i learned to do it this way. I develop a beautiful vibrato at times, but find its not easy to control. I also notice other players with well developed vibrato seem to even lift the thumb off the fingerboard. I can take pressure of off the finger when vibrating but not remove my thumb altogether. are thier different techniques for vibrato? 2. I have trouble when doing a short note, vibrato. i am unable to say be near the end of the bow stroke, and then start vibrato, and make it sound nice. it fluctuates at different speeds. the upper registers don't seem to be as much of an issue, tho?? thanks!!!

I would say would be easier to see you vibration as might misunderstand expectations. There different ways of vibrato, you’re absolutely right, there is an amazing video of CelloBello at this topic where different type of vibration is explained. At the beginning we learn one way and then we discover and take aboard more variations to be able create different colours in a sound (more/less intensive, more less dramatic, quick/slow etc). This video is crated to get control of the speed and rotation. Also i mentioned in description a lady who did another great explanation of other type of vibration (which is as well very popular and widely used as a part of variety of vibrato). If you could find a good local tutor to see if everything working well as you need to be able take thumb off (especially in thumb position - as widest vibrato could be reached leaving one vibrating on the string , other off to not cause limitation of rotation). If thumb stays under fingerboard ensure it’s completely free. With short note vibrato - if you will try continues vibration exercises , then vibrato while shifting , that might help). I hope it helped a bit 🙌🏻

@@cellotutorials3347 thank you so much for this!! It definitely helps!! I can take my thumb off if needed now. but I realized that I was thinking too much about it. That said, yes, I agree on getting a tutor. trouble is I live in a very Rural area in Canada. its a real curse, so its difficult to get in person instruction. again, thank you for taking the time out of your day to write such a detailed answer. Best/Doug
