- Intense interest in cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin, and the Covid-19 pandemic have sparked debate among central banks on whether they should issue digital currencies of their own. Advocates argue that central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs, can make cross-border transactions easier, promote financial inclusion, and provide payment system stability. Here's how central bank digital currencies could become the future of digital finance.
Intense interest in cryptocurrencies and the Covid-19 pandemic have sparked debate among central banks on whether they should issue digital currencies of their own.
China has been in the lead in developing its own digital currency. It's been working on the initiative since 2014. Chinese central bank officials have already conducted massive trials in major cities including Shenzhen, Chengdu and Hangzhou.
"China's experiment is very large scale," said J. Christopher Giancarlo, former chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. "When the world arrives in Beijing next winter for the Winter Olympics, they are going to be using the new digital renminbi to shop and to stay in hotels and to buy meals in restaurants. The world is going to see a functioning [central bank digital currency] very soon, within the coming year."
The U.S. is playing catch-up. In late February 2021, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the U.S. will engage with the public on the digital dollar this year.
Advocates contend central bank digital currencies can make cross-border transactions easier, promote financial inclusion and provide payment system stability. There are also privacy and surveillance risks with government-issued digital currencies. And in times of economic uncertainty, people may be more likely to pull their funds from commercial banks, accelerating a bank run.

REALITY CHECK: We dont want the central banks currency we want our own.
It doesn't matter what you want. The fact remains that most people still trust the central bank to produce a note that is agreed upon by everyone (private, institutional, governmental) as an indicator of value. For that reason, the USD will remain the official and most wide-spread transaction currency, even if it has to go digital.
That doesn't mean you can't invest in non-centralized assets, but odds are you will always be determining the value of such an asset straight against the USD.
It's for that exact reason we see stable coins such as USDT, Dai, BUSD as the main transaction counterparts to Bitcoin / Ethereum and other non-centralized tokens.
I'm not against your point of view and would like to see something like that happen in the futur but there are many reasons why its quit difficult to do that right now: 1) people won't be paying taxes if its 100% anonymous 2) You need to track the economy and issue enough currency to maximise economic growth without causing too much inflation. Something that's not taken into consideration with current crypto because they are international and don't follow a specific country's economy.
What I would suggest is a central bank that is fully automated (no humans involved = no corruption) and that can track the economy to be able to maximise economic growth with 0% inflation (damn that would be cool, but its way too much futuristic).

The logic you used is flawed, there is no value in you creating your own currency. Currency only works when a legitimate entity i.e. a company or government creates it. With this in mind if you are concerned about privacy like the video pointed out, the best way to protect yourself is by using a blockchain technology. The reason blockchain is so extraordinary is because it can create a unique ID that is not stored on one single device.

The truth is that our legal system won't allow any government agencies to directly access any banking and transaction record. bank ability to monitor every transactions should be a bad news for corrupted politicians and criminal organization, when physical cash is obsolete, they can no longer cover their illegal proceed with cash transactions which is harder to trace.
So far our bank already constantly monitoring all of our transactions. However they can only give the information to authority if they suspected any illegal activities or requested by authority under court order.

It will backfire. It will just make it much more easier to buy Bitcoin since you'll already have the currency as digital. Coinbase/etc won't have to wait for your ACH to go through, it will be instant. 😆 People will still want Bitcoin A LOT because the USD is going to become watered down inflated trash.

It's a misnomer to refer to cryptocurrencies as 'digital currency', since fiat money also exists digitally and has for many years.
BTC alone isn't fiat but cryptocurrency as a category is fiat since they are created at will and their are currently over 7500 forms of crypto. Governments will do everything they can (and they can do a lot) to insure control of the monetary system.
It is digital currency since you won't see the physical form of the currency issued.

China and most countries have already started using digital currency to pay for goods and services, it would be a wise thing to be amongst the earliest digital currency investors, think about the nearest future what could become when these currencies become more valuable than some real assets. If you have 10,000yuan and you feel you don't like it's performance anymore it would be easy to sell them off and buy what ever leading digital currency you like eg. BITCOIN and hold or invest in it.

All of these work together to influence price volatility, which is why it's pertinent one (esp someone new) follows the guides of an experienced market pundit who already knows all the market maneuver. It betters your chance at maximum profit by more than 100%.

The US dollar hasn't been backed by anything real since 1971 when Nixon ended the Bretton Woods Agreement (breaking the backing of the US Dollar by gold). It's all been fake fiat currency since then, The Fed just types a number into a computer to loan the US Government for an IOU, creating a fake number, whether you see the paper for that dollar ever get printed or not, less and less of it they physically printed anymore.
Bitcoin for example, may not have a backing either (only the faith of the people using it, same like US dollars), except the US Government can't print more Bitcoin (as no single entity can control it), so it cannot be manipulated like central bank controlled money. And you can't cheat the blockchain, it never lies, so it has the potential to gain more faith by the people than the dollar can ever achieve, since it will never inflate away your hard work and savings like the US Dollar does. My savings in Bitcoin will be worth more in 30 years (not whittle away into nothing just sitting in savings)...

The US has the most to lose with the rise of CBDCs. What used to be transacted in USD will, in the future be transacted in CBDCs. This will mean that the US dollar will be less influential.
%CBDC is a kind of technology, it can be used on USD which 90% of it already in digital form, much like a software upgrade.
No one cares about the US dollar. The US is just where the rulers hold their military.

It’s like putting bank account numbers in a qr and making banking apps (the largest are BBVA, Citibanamex Santander and HSBC) use it to transfer money. I don’t understand this what’s this difference between this and my bank app showing me how much money I have , which is digital as well. It’s not like all the dollars in the world in all the bank accounts actually exists physically in cash somewhere.
Difference is that changes in this currency aren't dictated by governments who increase inflation and lower the value of the dollar. Also, you may think your money is safe in the bank, but wait till they go bankrupt, we'll see how easy it is to take out your money. Also,, not every government is as "fair" as the US. In some cases, youre not even allowed to buy anothers country's currency thus making trade difficult. Bitcoin is simply better because its decentralized meaning there's not one entity who controls every aspect of the exchange but instead it's its user. Is there any way the IRS or any other government agency can know how much crypto you have exactly? Is there a way they can seize it? I've only invested $60 in bitcoin, but still. I don't like having to report that (or my financial business to the govt).
How would central banks' cryptocurrency differ from current electron one? Lets say from debit/credit cards, or visa card...
It would give them more control. They will end cash. They will know how every dollar is spent and make sure all taxes are collected. They will impose negative interest rates or a penalty for saving money.

What I find hilarious is the fact that the whole idea of bitcoin is that they want to move away from a fiat currency yet the way you buy bitcoin is by investing said fiat currency.
Fiat currency. Bitcoin's value is measured in said fiat currency, therefore if bitcoin is successful in replacing fiat currency, we will then run into the problem of bitcoin
having no value since it can't be measured in the fiat currency so then we will be put in a south park "space bucks" scenario where we will have to assign it value inevitably making bitcoin just another fiat currency.
