Here's Why A Lightly Used X5 xDrive50i is an Excellent Performance SUV Value.

  • Most X5's come with BMW's great turbo inline-6, but not this one. The 50i means it has a twin turbo V8, and this is still not the M! We take a walk around, we do an interior and technology overview, and we go for a drive! We find out why the xDrive50i versions of the X5 are fast, fun, and special, and why they present an excellent value compared with the likes of a Cayenne Turbo, Supercharged V8 Range Rovers, and GLE 63 AMG.

    I have a 2015 X5 xDrive50i with executive package with soft close doors and all safety options. Drives absolutely AMAZING. Extremely soft and when you put it into sports mode its a beast. My MSRP was around $90,000. I got it for $29,000 with only 40k miles clean title. I bought it 14 months ago which was before the big spike in used car prices. I've never had a single issue with it!

      Not sure all would agree. dynamic handling package or M adaptive suspension (especially) are both fantastic options. Air springs cost under 200 a piece, and a new compressor like 500 (IF you ignored leaking air springs and let the compressor burn itself out). But for 99% of people, a couple new air springs is all you need. But even the standard suspension isn't bad at all

    A buddy of mine is a service manger for BMW and he has some very interesting stories to tell about these twin turbo V8’s. I recently saw an X5 xDrive50i for sale at a dealer in Texas, gave my buddy the VIN and he said the customer was advised by BMW the vehicle needed an engine replacement due to smoking issues. Customer declined and now the car is for sale at a third party dealer.

      Yeah I would love to own one but I honestly don't feel that I can afford to both buy an extended warranty for it and then keep up with repairs and maintenance after the warranty has expired. That plus the inconvenience of having in the shop often could make ownership difficult if it's your only car.

    I know this is an older video, but still relevant! Just picked up a f15 x5 50i like the one here over the last weekend. I know the G series are out now but man, this is still such a great car. So much power and really pretty comfortable. Like you said too, pretty well equipped still too tech wise if you have the execute and drivers assistance packages. Android auto and Apple car play might be the ONLY things in my opinion that it could benefit from, but also that's an easy thing to add aftermarket if you're willing to spend like $500 to do it, easy peasy. This is a great video, but it fails to mention the performance tech that this particular version does NOT have, like the dynamic handling package and adaptive suspension. These options are extremely rare and take the X5's performance to the next level. If you're looking for a used model and want the absolute best available, be sure to add these items to your must-have list.
    Also, as an audiophile, I find the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system to be a must-have as well. It's hard to find a better factory stereo anywhere, in any brand.

      @TheZListCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All good points. From someone who worked at a BMW dealership for a couple of years, I can agree about how sweet those rare options like Dynamic Handling and B&O are. However, the majority of these cars do not have them, so I don't focus too much on them in my reviews.

      Scheduled Maintenance is actually quite reasonable on these in terms of the amount of how frequently it needs attention. However, the cost will be high for certain items. Even just tires on these V8 M-Sport models are really price, as they have 315-series rear tires and pads and rotors are not cheap. The real issue with these is unscheduled repairs. From leaking valve cover gaskets to cooling system issues and regularly failing alternators, it can get scary without a warranty. Some have reported relatively trouble-free ownerships, but my experience working at a BMW dealership would suggest otherwise. I've seen some major stuff happen.

Overall, definitely safer than a 2012 or so V8 BMW with the "50i" designation, but still a V8 BMW, ya know, so it will need some attention here and there. There seems to be some higher (100+k) mileage ones out there for sale, so hopefully they really are capable of good longevity. @@kenmcdonaldii3887 M Sport cars are designated by the wheels, the shadowline trim, and the different bodywork (mainly bumpers). Not all of them have M badging. M is not in the name of the X5 xDrive50i. Now the newer BMW's are a different story. A base X3 is just an xDrive30i with a 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The 6-cylinder turbo version is called the X3 M40i. It's an "M Performance Car", a la M235i, M240i, X5 M50i, M340i. Those "M Performance" bridge the gap between the base engines and the full-on M model. However, in this F15 generation of X5, the xDrive50i was not considered an "M Performance" Car. It simply had the larger engine, and could be had with an M Sport package, which did NOT designate exterior M badging. Trust me on this - I worked at a BMW dealership for years. I can assure you the steering wheel was not swapped. If it was from an X5 M it would have M-colored stitching on the steering wheel. This has a factory steering wheel. Hopefully this all makes sense. Sorry for the long response.

      If you buy any BMW with this N63 engine that's 2014 or later and/or has had the "customer care campaign" performed at a BMW dealer in the past, it probably won't be too bad until you start hitting 150k miles or higher. But no guarantees, some of these earlier ones could have issues at lower mileage than that.

      The best actually. I drive approximately 45,000 miles per year. I have a 2017 fully loaded 50i and it has around 295,000 miles. Still fast as hell, shifts smooth, and I’ve had ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES WITH THE MOTOR AT ALL! My mother actually has the same 2017 car but the 40e variant. Just crested 159,000 miles and no issues. Both of our BMWs have BOOTMOD3 STAGE 1 engine tunes, and my 50i has a Stage 2 XHP transmission tune. Both X5s are maintained by me! Driving both cars onto ramps, in my driveway, and doing oil changes, trans fluid changes, etc. Main rule of thumb is, if you take care of your car, it’ll take care of you.
      Also, if you go onto a place called emanual online, that’s where I got my service manuals from for both cars. We are all human, and even though some of us may not be mechanically inclined, just remember that your grandparents were under their cars with a jack and jack stands changing the oil in their 68 chargers. It’s not much different from those cars to modern cars. The only difference would be resetting the oil life. That’s IT! Automakers want it to seem more difficult than it really is by adding plastic and covers over service areas. Not to mention all the wires in modern car engine bays. But if you really think about it, there’s still oil, a filter, a fill hole and a drain bolt.

      Great informative video The updated N63 TU(technical update) has addressed the big heat issue with the 4.4 over the years. I owned a 2011 50i for 6 years,best car I ever owned. Had no engine issue although it did get some of the CCP done. One thing I will say about German cars is you must stick to the proper maintenance schedule. Change the oil every 3-5k and you will have fewer issues.I plan on getting another soon.
