Hi Sonia I’m curious to know more about the scope of practice involved with swallowing assessments. As a long term care dietitian, usually we have the SLP screen the residents for any potential swallowing issues. Typically, if the resident comes in with a hx of dysphagia, cerebral infraction, etc they are screened right away. I always ask if a resident has chewing/swallowing issues with IDT or residents. If so, I will always refer them to speech therapy.
Hi, Sonia, Since I stumbled on your video, I can't stop watching them. You are very special and kind. You take your time to reply to all comments on your video, answering the questions honestly and patiently. That's is very huge. I am also a Registered Dietitian -Nutritionist and also a TH-cam content creator. I want to know if dietitians face the same challenges we face here in Africa? Here People think that we are to be cooks? This causes huge discouragement for nutrition students. I like to know what the experience is like in Canada.
Hi Amarachi, thank you so much for your kind words! And hello to a fellow content creator! For where I work, the patients and staff do refer to me sometimes as part of the kitchen staff, or someone who takes care of the food and calls me in just to tell me which foods they dislike, which can be disheartening but there's no one else to do it unfortunately (usually in hospitals it's a dietary technician's role), so I do it anyway for the sake of my patients. Sometimes people also assume we know everything about cooking, which granted, some dietitians do as food is our passion, but at the end of the day we are not chefs. I have read through comments on Facebook groups where some dietitians are required to assist in kitchen work, which to me is not right. So yes I assume we do face similar challenges in receiving the right respect for our roles. However, that's not to say it's always like this. Many people do understand we can be the experts of nutrition and those relationships I always enjoy :)
I can relate with you Amarachi. Here in Cameroon dietitians are not even regarded as part of the healthcare professions team. Quite different from South Africa where I studied and worked a little, where little almost every hospital has a dietitian or more!
Hi Sonia, I've seen how helpful you've been to so many people here, that's so very kind of you. Could you please guide me too? I completed my bachelors in Food Science and Nutrition. The NHS decided to change the norms from the very year and have made a masters degree compulsory for future dietitians. Can I become a dietitian with a one-year masters degree in Nutritional Sciences? Followed by an internship ofcourse, but does this masters degree qualify? Or do they only accept a two-year masters in Nutrition and Dietetics?
Is the NHS the UK? I wasn't able to find info regarding the need for Masters. I would confirm with the specific College or regulatory body for where you're living. In the US I know they've begun this but those who have become an RD before the law came into effect were grandfathered in so you may be the same depending on the when the law will come into effect.
RD schedules in LTCs can vary. Usually they are part time on weekdays and you combine a few LTCs together for hours, but for myself I am a full time Monday to Friday, I choose my own time but usually I am 9-5.
Hey, iam an indian student just completed with my bsc food nutrition and dietetics course i want to do my MSC on this course do u have any suggestions for msc college?
SLPs do, but RDs are taught to conduct these assessments as well. And depending on the place, RDs and SLPs conduct it together, or RDs conduct it alone due to the state of the healthcare system present.
Hmm good question. There’s no traditional job out there where you cook (ex hospitals, longterm care, health clinics), but there’s a lot of non-traditional roles (recipe developper for a company, food blog or TH-cam channel, I’ve also seen a chef who is a dietitian)
For the best answer I recommend contacting the dietitian organization for your state/province/country. But I believe you would need to take the dietetics full undergrad program, and you might need some additional science courses to apply (if you haven’t already taken them before).
I would say yes! The most difficult would be disordered eating and eating disorders, but that’s just my take. I always feel very anxious counseling for this as you need to be careful with your words and sometimes the backgrounds can contain some traumatic experiences.
This depends on various things, like where you are located (if in America, you will need a Masters to practice), how much you network (ex. Getting a job after internship at the same place), and what you want for a workplace (it seems like more clinical nutrition jobs are opening up)
Hello Sonia, nice video ! Would it be possible for you to guide me wrt what course to compete in Canada if I want to pursue dietetics there, I am an Indian citizen and have completed my bachelors and masters in Foods , Nutrition and Dietetics or do you know anyone who provides career counselling on the same? I wish to complete another masters as I wish to study courses different from what I have currently completed, however I need to message or email university supervisors and I’m not sure if or not I’ll receive a response. Are there any courses you can suggest?
Hi Kate! I would suggest contacting Dietitians of Canada and/or the province you wish to live and work in. I believe you need to do a bridging program of sorts, but I’m not certain of the current status of they program.
Hi Amy! Schools will require the grades of some specific courses for you to even apply, it depends on the school you want to apply to. I would recommend looking on the website of those schools for details, but generally it’s probably a few science courses, math, and English. The other courses are there to bump up your grade (so whatever you’re confident in).
Thanks a lot, Sonia for replying to my comment and your also your videos, they've inspired me a lot. There aren't any "true" dietitians around me. They just call themselves "dietitian" but they only promote weigh loss programs. It's great if I can connect with you (maybe through email or messenger) because I really want to learn more from your experience, from a true dietitian.
Masters in nutrition and dietetics. Am right now studying for my bachelors degree but in my country we don’t have that official exams for registered dietitians. So my question is if I come to Canada for my masters will I start from level 1 or will the allow me to continue with my masters?
Can registered dietitian work and help people with eating disorders? If yes then how? After completing Master's are there any additional certifications or courses needed to work for eating disorders? Please help 🥺💜
Yes absolutely! You don’t require a Master’s to do this, but depending on where you are from there could be a program dedicated to this. Aside from that you could always take a Master’s in psychology for counseling clients, become a certified intuitive eating counselor and/or get a CEDRD (certified eating disorder dietitian).
@@soniadunutrition Thank you for your reply 😄 Just another question can a registered dietitian work as a sports dietitian? If yes then how? Are you happy that you became a registered dietitian or sometimes think that you should have some different course in another career field? Your videos are really nice 🥰💜💜💜
@@adyashasatapathy82 The sports dietitian path I know less about, but there is the IOC Diploma (www.sportsoracle.com/course/ioc-diploma-in-sports-nutrition/) and the CSSD (www.cdrnet.org/cssd-eligibility-requirements-update?set_ga_opt_in_cookie=1&set_ga_opt_in=Save+Settings)

I get what you’re going through. My mom doesn’t really “approve” the dietetics field either and it’s really frustrating. I won’t be the one who says “if you like it then go for it” but I do encourage you to pause and take a look at all your interests and strengths and all the programs that could fit with those. You had asked before if I sometimes wished I were in some other career, and yes I do. But also nothing else really appeals to me right now other than nutrition, and of course there’s cons in each job and field. At the end of the day, it’s a combo of: enjoyment of the subject, interest (can you see yourself continuing to do this year after year), where you can go (ie. Certifications, specializations, managerial positions), the money you could earn, the lifestyle/work life balance you ultimately will feel comfortable with. Parental expectations are tough, and I don’t know fully what you are going through, but as a person working through something similar, I’m slowly learning that I have to be comfortable with what I end up doing or where I end up being.
Are you thinking of working in longterm care?
