- Haider is a 2014 Indian crime drama film written, produced and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and co-written by Basharat Peer. It stars Shahid Kapoor and Tabu in the lead role, along with Shraddha Kapoor and Kay Kay Menon. Irrfan Khan appears in an extended special appearance.
The film is both a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet and an adaptation of Basharat Peer's memoir Curfewed Night, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Haider, a young student and a poet, returns to Kashmir at the peak of the conflict to seek answers about his father's disappearance and ends up being tugged into the politics of the state.
Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy after Maqbool (2003) and Omkara (2006). The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival, and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim and the film was a success at the box office and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The direction, performances of Kay Kay Menon, Tabu and Shahid Kapoor, screenplay, film score and editing received praise and garnered several accolades.
Haider was the first Indian film to win the People's Choice Award at the Rome Film Festival. Among several awards and nominations in India, the film won five National Film Awards: Best Male Playback Singer, Best Dialogue, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, and Best Music Direction.

Everybody talks about Manoj Bajpayee, Pankaj Tripathi and Nawaz and in this scene Shahid on how good actors they are but nobody notices "Kay Kay Menon" how hell of a Authentic actor he is currently in the industry this man deserves our respect.

@deadpool Don't put this into the category of adaptations. It is still sheet brilliance from Vishal to pull off such a story in Kashmir backdrops.
@deadpool I think Bollywood is getting better now. There are crap movies everywhere in every industry in India. Yes in Bollywood it's a bit higher. But films like Sardar Udham Gehariyaan(I liked it) Badhaai Ho Tappad were original stories and they were really good. If the audiance choose the movies to watch much more wisely then in the coming years these so called "Typical Masala movies" will get reduced.

Haider is playing football beside his father's grave during the ceremony, which shows that he is done with materialistic nature of everyone around him, he is over the artificial pain his uncle is trying to show. That's how you write a complex character and that's how you maintain the organic nature of the story, by showing and not telling. Excellent job

Eddie Redmayne is one of the best actors to come out of british theatre after Daniel day Lewis. Eddie Redmayne is monster when it comes to intense roles. Sahid kapoor performance was not even closer to what KK Menon delivered in Haider.
For Academy Award one need to perfect Method Acting which our Bollywood heroes lack.
