I met Freddy back when he was in the group Alias. I was interning at a radio station in Birmingham Alabama and a private concert was the prize. It was for all the high schools in the area to try to win a can food drive. The winner got the private concert for that school at a club. I got to go because of my internship and I got to go early and hang out with the DJs and the band. Freddy and the band couldn’t have been nicer and hearing him sing live was amazing! They sang several songs that were Alias songs, but he also sang When I’m With You by Sheriff too. He sounded beautiful even singing live, the notes he held were stunning!! I literally had chills while he was singing.

It's not THAT high: he's still not quite Dream On era Steven Tyler. Or Steelheart. But I guess there are phrases that sound like they are from an alto rocker's register.
I always assumed that last note was dubbed a la Shannon Hoon...

    • @BillGraper

@@josephfisher426 I don't think it's the note. It's the timber. You can totally tell it's a guy in both "Dream On" and "I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)." The way he holds the note, I could see someone who doesn't know the son g thinking it's a woman.

That song ("More Than I Can Say") was written and first recorded by Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison of The Crickets shortly after Buddy Holly's tragic death. In 1961, it became a minor hit for Bobby Vee (who was the fill-in for Buddy Holly the next night after the plane crash that took Buddy Holly's life).

"When I'm With You" had its resurrection during my senior year of high school. I remember LOVING the song (I still do) but I didn't know anything about the group who sang it. There was no video on MTV, they weren't on any variety shows, and we didn't have Internet back them to find out about them. They remained a mystery--but the song was solid gold.

Ok, go back to 1982-83, I'm the Music Director and DJ and my college's Radio station. On Fridays, we had a show called "Nu Vinyl", which ran from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, in which we played only music that had been recently released.
When the Sheriff album arrived, as was customary at the time, the record label provided multiple copies: 1 for the Radio Station, 1 for the Music Director, and frequently additional copies to give away as promotional material.
I played the Sheriff album for about 3 weeks on "Nu Vinyl", and the only reaction was dislike. It bombed on "Nu Vinyl", and we took it out of rotation for the rock shows. However, I had kept the Music Director copy, even after I graduated and moved on in my life.
Long story short - Fast forward to 1989, and the woman I was dating at the time kept raving about the song "When I'm With You". Apparently Top 40 radio stations were playing the song, but not AOR/Rock stations. As her birthday was fast approaching, I went to every record store in the NYC area trying to find the single/album. Nobody had it, and most record stores never even heard of the song.
After a frustrating week of trying to find the single/album anywhere - a distant memory triggered in my mind. Sheriff.... why does that name sound familiar. I began looking through my record collection (1,000's of albums), and there it was - the Music Director's copy I received years ago - STILL IN THE ORGINAL SHRINKWARP!! I wrapped up the album and gave it to my girlfriend for her birthday. She loved it.

He isn't the only musician that has ties to Upstate New York
In addition to the Goo Goo Dolls, whom you did an earlier video, you have Lou Graham from Rochester.

In a completely different genre, Cecelia Bartoli holds a note from one of her arias for sn amazingly long time. It's on YT, & as notable for her facial expression while she's holding it, as if she's saying to the audience "Isn't this crazy? I can't believe Im doing this." It's worth having a look at.

Perfect World is the song I remember the most. I loved the song but had no idea who did it. 34 years later I'm finding out.

Too many song titles have the same words ...example, More than words ( Alias) If I here that title to day I would immediately think of the group Extreme...... Power of Love.... Huey Lewis and then Celine Dion different song same title etc..... thanks for these Memories by Sherriff and Alias I loved both these song you featured . P.S. I too thought the Alias song was called I need you Now (LOL)

It always seemed to me that the name "Alias" was a reference to being an alternate name for Sheriff, and it really seems like it with their use of what looks like a sheriff's badge on most of the Alias album art.

These two songs could make another comeback. But as being used in a modern retro time piece movie. Those these songs on that movie track. They could peak in the top twenty again.

When I'm with You was a one of my many 'radio white whale' songs in the early 80s. I would only recognize the song, and not the title, AFTER the had DJ had announced who the band was. It took me and my friends years to finally learn it was Sheriff. Since there was no google we would ask the greatest music lovers or older teenagers. The struggle was real.lol Great episode 😃

Adam you missed this part. Arnold had bought the rights to the song from the other band members and gave them to his wife Valerie for whom the song was written. The second round on the charts made her lots of money.
