You stated that Honolulu had the highest rent in the nation. That isn't true. New York City surpasses us by far, and Los Angeles and San Francisco are also much higher. We're not even in the top ten. Constitutionally, this measure will fail, but it's only a money grab anyway. If someone can afford to have a vacation house in Hawaii other than their primary residence, they're not going to care about your 3%.
Even if they rent their property how many residents can afford it ? It appears wanting to help local renters yet seems the true prepose is a means of collecting more tax revenue. We had a rental caps before , now needed and no one does it . Rental caps would help renters . A camouflaged tax increase perhaps ?
Yay! It’s about time. I’m 65 born and raised in Hawaii, and I can’t own a home. It’s crazy the prices for “affordable housing”. I’m a bit tired of all these wealthy people buying up property here pricing us out of our ‘aina
More Government telling people what they are allowed to do with their own property and wanting more money. Homeowners are already paying for property taxes that go to services they aren’t using if the house is unoccupied.
Not correct. California and New York rents are higher. But I hear the pleas and feel the pinch. But eh, we live in paradise and one of the most beautiful places in the world. Costs of living always goes up with Quality of life so we all need to keep that in mind. This bill will require some clear guidelines. How do they define "vacant"? Who enforces this? Will it accommodate for different circumstances such as deaths or finding "owners"? Many complexities with such a bill
Quality of life? Have you been living under a rock? Or just turning a blind eye to everything? New York eh? They also make a lot more annually than 99% of the people here. Hawaii isn’t Hawaii anymore.
so exactly how do you do this if you want to stay in your vacation condo a few weeks a year? do you let some poor family live in there and then stay in a hotel when you want to visit your own property?

HOA FEES MORE THAN A MORTGAGE
People don't like to rent out their homes because tenants damage their homes.
NOTHING CHANGING. PRICES GOING UP.

Get the government out of your life's, no affordable homes anywhere, builder's are making to much
First you need to get rid of airbnb
F you aren’t a resident you shouldn’t be able to own. Housing is to hard to come by.
