Freestyle, see what's coming and enjoying nature. Strolling along in nature with my gear, always amazing. And some prepared projects for animals of my interest per year.
Pretty much the same. If I find a really nice place I might stay there for a while, otherwise a lot of walking, seeing something interesting and stopping and then walking some more. Sometimes when I think about this before going out of the house my mind would be like "this is absurd, why would you go out and walk randomly?". But somehow almost everytime I go on this kind of unplanned trip, something happens. You can never get bored in nature.
Great stuff Espen, my favourite way to go out & shoot with my camera. No expectations, no targets. Just take it for what it is & enjoy it. Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work 👏👏👏
Towards the end of the video, I’d have happily just sat under a tree with my ghuille suit on, just listening to the water and watching nature go by. 🙏😎👊
Fantastic video as always Espen. You're absolutely right - heading out for a nice walk and actually SEEING the birds will always be the priority for me. That's where my passion lies. Loved that photo of the dipper as well. Look like you've found a great spot. Cheers and take care!
Just found your channel. Been thinking about bicycle and photo things!! I also like to do photothings in a adventure format. Also one beaver video coming after the trip is done!
Wow !!! This environment is absolutely amazing. This brings out the best in Scotland, what an amazing place you seemed to cycle for miles as always really appreciate you taking us on your Scottish Wildlife adventures.
That f2.8 40-150 and converter is serving you well. 420mm can provide the clinical bird guide image or those gorgeous habitat images. The frustration of having the bird that close and well lit only for a leaf, blades of grass or branches and an uncooperative subject. Grrrr... Good job on your interview with Forsgard.
Great video Espen, I really enjoyed watching this and it's such a great way to get out, go light and just take advantage of what just appears in front of you. The Dipper pictures were lovely, great diffused background. Awesome stuff mate in great surrounding. All the best and hope to catch up next month. Cheers R 👍
Couldn't agree more Espen. I'm sure it's because there's no pressure of failure when it's just a day out. What a spot you've found, I can see some great images coming from there. As soon as I saw the rock with the vegetation I thought that a Dipper on there would be superb. Loved the Toad shot at the end too, great use of slow shutter. Thanks for the journey. Stay safe.
You should have a look at ThinkTank Digital Holsters, they can be chest mounted with extra straps, or you can chest mount it while wearing your backpack, just use the cross strap to mount on. The holster comes in several sizes so shop and see what they have, there's also a raincover included. Your lens and body stay together it's great. I have the TT 30 Digital Holster for my kit. I also bicycle around to get to trails and trail heads.
Hi Espen as I'm getting on a bit now this is the type of photography that appeals to me just going for a walk stop at a couple of places take a few photos if the opportunity arises and as I only take photographs for my own pleasure it doesn't matter if I don't get any shots as I've still gone for a nice walk. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend.
This kind of unplanned photography is making up the most part of my photography. Once in while I do get up early or stay out long. But not very often. Denmark is so much more cultivated than Scotland it is easy to bike or walk around, weather is kind of the same maybe a little bit better summer. I am an elderly man now and this casual exploring is the best way for me. I enjoy it very much and I love your channel it is very inspiring! The gear is m4/3. Favorite is the same lens as you are using in this video sometimes with the mc14 or mc 20. All very easy to carry around :-)
Epic. Beavers are far from extinct here in the US, they are busy little things each year around here. We live on “Beaver Dam Rd” for a pretty good reason :-). They are a real pain for some of the feeder creeks off the rivers we like to kayak as they dam them up and limit our trips. And I completely get the “just get out there” approach. My day job is all about detailed plans, I have enough organization.
I too am a mainly explore and try to take a shot if I see something interesting. I do a few planned trips to photograph lizards every so often You have some fantastic locations close to home. Coming from the Australian landscape where I am there is some nice bush but not much in open spaces. Thick bush is hard for me to get those fleeting wildlife shots as you have to be so quick. No relaxed shots lying down near my location
Very nice video. Used to have beavers near me. Found the young ones were active throughout the day but the adults were only at twilight and into the evening. The adults will tolerate you if you're quiet. I'm in Canada but assuming beavers are fairly universal in behavior. Cheers!
I have a Neewer 45 degree backpack. My OMD Mark 2, 300f4 and 1.4x plus an Olympus 12-40mm and a 40-150mm kit lens. Compact kit. And I troll the wetland lakes and the coast. Especially during rain periods cos the kit is showerproof, as you know. Thanks for the practice panning video as well. I will stake out a dam and give it a go. I really like your videos and your angle of attack.
@@EspenHelland You are welcome buddy!! I'm god thanks, hope you are too! I'm sorting things out here, getting a new van then im coming up again, be nice to meet up and buy you a wee dram 😉👍🏼
Hello Espen, thank you for your film. We do the same. The difference to Germany is, that you have more Wildlife, than we do. You live at a very special place. Scotland is unique.
When you have spare time or a whole day. Just grab your cam, grab spare batteries and cards and go the heck out. I have a Kanal behind my Home and im going downstream to one point and back on foot. That are around 4 hours of listening to Birds, the water and its very relaxing. The problem with planning, it always happens something unplanned for me.
Great advice, shoot what you see. Headed over to Scotland at the end of June. I'll be making a action packed circle from Edinburgh to Inverness, down to Skye, Glencoe, Glasgow, then St Abbs head ( Bass Rock trying find puffins) out from Edinburgh. Recommendation where I might find Dippers? Thanks
That sounds amazing!! You’ll find dippers in most rivers on the route I’d say! Even Edinburgh has them on the water of Leith. Bass Rock is more for gannets though, isle of May is better for puffins. But the landing trip to Bass Rock is incredible!
Hi Espen. I am finding that I am not so keen on hides because it limits the width of view although they are good for nests or holes. Went out a couple of days ago to photograph Hares ad found two Red Deer, nor so common in Suffolk. Got a few good pictures I am happy with. Its just the being out there.
Great place to Photography. You should have taken 3d suit. It is light weight and in such moments you would use it. Great photos. Does the Olympus lens have a movable hood?
Inspirational, I prefer the just going for a walk approach and maybe hanging out at a promising spot for a bit. The only problem is I want to be at all the good spots at sunrise and can’t quite manage it. Damn the temporal nature of existence.
That's a great spot for some photos! I'm jealous. If it's sunny outside instead of overcast, do you even bother bringing your camera with you on these trips?
Hi Espend. I am hesitating between the OMD M 1 X and the EM 1 Mk III, and since I especially like the way you do things and I know that you have these two cameras, I would like to know your opinion in this regard. Thanks.
Hi, I actually have the em1ii and the em1x. I really like my em1x with all its buttons, built in battery grip and features. Though there are times when I walk around that I wish I had the smaller em1iii. It depends how you shoot i think.
Ooh that place looks legit! I'm ready to go shoot some Osprey in the face! All the bird shots were great, but I really liked that toad shot! And yeah, last second, no plans, photo adventures are how I usually roll. 😂
@@EspenHelland I had to postpone that a bit. I had to a lot farther than I anticipated to get my 2nd vaccine dose, and I just got back, so hopefully I'll get out to the lake with the Osprey here this next week or so.
Why do you use 40-150 millimetres with 1,4x instead of 100-400 millimetres? Regarding your question. I think that when things are done by hobby it’s more important to enjoy the process than to be results oriented. I don’t know it’s well expressed because my English is bad.
Your English is good. My 300 was in for repairs, so I used this combo instead. I don’t actually have the 100-400 it was just a loaner from Olympus. I think even if it’s professionally it’s good to take the pressure of every now and just enjoy it 🙂
What's your favourite way to photograph nature?
At The moment its with my DSLR camera trap.

Exactly as you just described.... without the bike ;-)

Espen, have you tried using soundtracks of birds to attract them?
Not sure of the rules where he lives but in Australia, especially in National Parks you need a license to do that. aparantly it stresses some birds.
I’m not a fan of it. I think if you do it it’s very important to do it outside the breeding and migration season and only sparingly.
Yeah, I think that’s a good rule that should probably be incorporated other places as well.
God if I left my bike like that were I go to take photographs it would be nicked lol
That’s such a shame
