    Stargate (named Defender II on NES) is an arcade game released in 1981 by Williams Electronics. Created by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar, it is a sequel to the 1980 game Defender, and was the first of only three productions from Vid Kidz, an independent development house formed by Jarvis and DeMar.
    The Family Computer port developed and published by HAL in 1988 (renamed Star Gate, later named Defender II for US release) seems to be related to their Millipede (renamed Milli-Pede, later named back to Millipede for US release) and Joust ports, as well as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, all of which were released around the same time. In particular; the title jingle for Milli-Pede/Star Gate/Joust are almost identical, the music played when Star Gate begins is a longer version of the opponent entrance music within Punch-Out!!, and the music played during Star Gate's intermission screen between waves is the same as the screen after a loss in Punch-Out!!.
    This game is endless. After playing well over 10 waves, I kill myself. -

      Not just the music (by Koji Kondo), but the way the title screen and the scoreboard were designed, Nintendo must have programmed this one first, and as far back as 1983, while it had been making negotiations with Atari for the latter to have North American distribution rights for the FamiCom. Two other titles, Joust and Millipede, were also said to have been part of this failed package deal.

      @jayden6538 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristopherSobieniak HAL Laboratory is not owned by Nintendo, although you are forgiven for thinking that given how many of their games they develop for Nintendo. This was produced back when HAL had an American division and published games by themselves. You are correct about Nintendo trying to get Atari to license the Famicom, though. I bet Atari regretted declining the offer when the NES became a huge success. The toy company Worlds of Wonder did distribute the NES in America, though.

    • @superleviathan
      @superleviathan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jayden6538 The Atari ports were outsource jobs. Nintendo subcontracted their development to HAL because they were the only other developer familiar with the Famicom's CPU.
      That resulted in Nintendo bringing HAL on board to work on Pinball, Golf, Balloon Fight and other early Famicom games.

    worked for HAL and Nintendo, and HAL would become a second-party developer for them... so... yes, it makes sense why the music would be so similar. Don't forget that both tunes were also in the original "Punch-Out!!" for the arcades.

      This. I see so many posts comparing the release dates of Defender II and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out to try to decide which came first and coming to no conclusions (because they were released so close together), but what they should be comparing is NES Defender II's 1987 and arcade Punch-Out's *1983* release date, which makes it very clear which game had the music first.

    Cool seeing the original version as I've been playing the hacked version via My Arcade handheld. It's called Levin Action and its hacked so there are no people "hostages" to defend 😅 , but surprisingly it still gets tough!
    But I do miss out on being able to rescue hostages. I have Defender 2 for Xbox. Nice tip is to carry 4 hostages through a stargate for bonus and warp.
    I do recommend the hack Levin Action for anyone who wants to kick alien butt without needing to defend anyone but yourself. And since there are no ppl to defend in that version, the land never explodes. But it still becomes increasingly tough.
