I worked in a courthouse for over 20 years. I've only seen 2 contempt orders issued by a judge for failure to appear for jury duty. No one will ever call you. Everything is done through the mail. And money is never, ever asked for

Also, find out the actual jury selection procedure for your county. I've seen some fake legal documents arrive at my house. I called the county clerks office and confirmed it was bogus. Stay safe folks.
He should have contacted the judge straight away and confirmed, If this is the first of of hearing of 3 arrest warrants. If have not changed address, then it should have raised alarm bells of a scam.
These people are just plain naive. I've gotten calls like this and many other calls similar, over the past 7 yrs. First thing I say to them is "let me call you back at the company", and they always hang up.
If anyone ever asks for money, it's almost 100% guaranteed to be a scam. My elderly parents have almost been duped several times. I have warned them repeatedly and very sternly to contact me immediately if anyone asks for money. I think their generation is so trusting because of the era they grew up in, when you actually could trust people. Fortunately, they've never lost any money but they've come awful close to falling for a few scams.
People were just as trustworthy back then as today. The difference is not trustworthiness but that new technology has opened up vastly more ways to scam people. There have always been con artists and there always will be.

I received a call from "State Police" looking for donations. I said "sure"! When they asked for my banking information, I KNEW. I said "Just send me something in the mail and I'll send you a check". I even gave them my address. Months later now, haven't gotten a thing. It's scary how they trick people.
They called me too, and I’m in Arizona. The call I got looked like it came from the local Sheriff’s Dept and they were very convincing. I told him I would talk to my neighbor who is a judge and they hung up. Lol.

I actually give my money away! The more you have, the harder crooks try to get it! Extortion, fraud, ATM skimmers, identity theft, mail/package theft, carjacking, home invasion, burglary, Nigerian princes, romance scams, fake jewelry scams, vandalism. If you have been selected for Jury duty in the past, you know what the Detective said about how you will be or not be notified is true. Same with the IRS...they will never call, email or text you.

Courts mail letters to jurors. But some people here are saying that the letter is sent by registered or certified. I feel certain that his not accure. At least not in my State. I've received jury notices before and they were sent regular mail. Not certified nor registered. Also, in my State there are several reasons why you may decline to serve. One is being age 65 and older. But, you still must respond to the notice.
Anybody who is requesting money from you and pay through Venmo or any other source you know is a scam. I’m glad these people are okay and thank you for bringing it out to the media so others can learn from it.

The scammers use fear to control you. Does your heart race when you get a call, thinking for a minute that you're in trouble somehow? This is what you need to do. Your phone should let you know of a possible spam caller. Take it. Get used to their methods of scamming, the way they talk, the questions they ask. Desensitize yourself. I now have loads of fun screwing with them.
This is why I don't answer the phone if I don't know who it is. No cop is going to call your home and ask for money. If this had happened to me, I would have marched down to the courthouse and checked with the Jury Duty office. I'm very sorry this happened to them.
2 of our PA's had calls last year about this. One was running around trying to find coverage and told the boss why. She stopped her and said, no, don't do it. Call the police instead. Someone had gotten ahold of our providers phone list and was going down it.
No government department takes Venmo!!! Jury duty notices come by registered mail. If you don't receive a notice, it wasn't delivered, period. In my industry we have a motto, "trust, but verify". We always verify what needs to be verified by law.
Yeah... Jury duty notices here literally come on a postcard. They aren't wasting funds on registered mail, or even an envelope. If you don't show up, oh well, they don't do anything.
I refuse to answer my phone if it's not immediate family or work (and sometimes I still don't answer). My motto is, if they don't leave a voicemail they don't get a call back. Plus I get bill collectors calling for the person who had my number before me.

You know... if I am trusting my life with someone during surgery, I kind of want someone with better judgment. The next time you're on the phone with Verizon, ask them how it's possible that they have no idea where phone calls placed using their network are coming from, or who's making them.
Just laugh it off and ask for some paper work. Anything dealing with money ask for paper work. Phone calls and e-mail means reearch but no money without valid and confirmed paperwork or good research.
This same scam happened to my cousin in 2017. They scammed her out of $1700. She received a letter from them with official letterheads, followed by phone calls, while she was grieving for her deceased husband. She's not a gullible person normally, and not stupid. But it happened. This particular scam was very new at the time.

When my husband was in grad school, 35 years ago, someone tried a similar scam on us, calling in the middle of the night, claiming to be a police detective and accusing us of writing hot checks, telling us that we had to get several thousand dollars and meet him to pay the fines. (It turned out that our outgoing bill payments had been stolen, and that is where the scammer got the info on us.) He was angry and abusive, trying to scare us. Common sense says that cops are not going to call and warn you of impending arrest, so I dared him to come get us. (I was sleepy and angry.) We did report it to the cops, who told us that if it happened again, we should agree to meet him and then notify the cops to be there. There is a special room in Hell for scammers.
Most scammers depend on fear and urgency to get people to act impulsively - I get how good these scammers at getting personal data to make things seem legit, but NOTHING legit is that pressing that you have to send money immediately. Hang up or tell the scammers to give you a number that you will call back when you verify the information. This will change their tone quickly I guarantee you.
Law enforcement, IRS, Social Security will not just call you about anything. They will send you a letter by way of the United States Postal Service. Think before you react to a call. Apparently the Sheriff's Office number was spoofed.
A sheriff or court asking for cashapp payment? For 5k? You would think you'd have to pay in person in courthouse or at least their official website? No county or government agency will demand a Venmo payment over the phone!

We have spoof phone calls that look like they are coming from the local hospital. The first time it happened, my husband panicked and called me bcuz I have a heart condition. He had missed the call and thought someone was calling to notify him of an emergency situation with my heart.
She was never summoned for jury duty though so it was just a pure scam that played on her fears due to her job. No inside job. Scammers use spoofing software that hijack other people’s phone numbers so they could make it appear they were calling from the courthouse. Doesn’t mean they actually were - they’re usually doing it from another country all together
It was a random scammer. The scammer just pretended that she missed jury duty, when she didn't even have jury duty (she wasn't even supposed to be at the courthouse on that date). It would be like if a scammer called you up and said that you missed jury duty on March 17th (or any random date they choose). Well, of course you weren't at the courthouse on that day, because the court never requested you to be there in the first place, as you didn't even have jury duty that day.
Reminds me of a voicemail I once received from the "IRS", warning me I would "be placed in handcuffs by the cops" if I didn't pay "what I owed plus penalties" in two hours! 😂😂

Many scammers (here in MX) use private phone number, that their phone number does not show on the screen so, I do not answer any of those. In the phone screen it says "private number" and many times they can be from other countries. Some other times, when I am waiting for someone's new call that is not in my phone list, I have answered to some scammers and they start their play. What I do is pretend that I can no listen anything and keep saying to them "hello, hello, hello...." :) they get discourage and hang up. Other times, I just hung up on them.
There are people in the world that love to give their money away. I never feel bad for people that get scammed. We have a brain for a reason. I am always amazed when I hear these stories.

I actually give my money away! The more you have, the harder crooks try to get it! Extortion, fraud, ATM skimmers, identity theft, mail/package theft, carjacking, home invasion, burglary, Nigerian princes, romance scams, fake jewelry scams, vandalism. Just COSTING you money is a win, whether they get any, or not.

I keep telling my 92 year old mom absolutely no money of any kind goes out to anyone who asks for it. Or information either.

If you have been selected for Jury duty in the past, you know what the Detective said about how you will be or not be notified is true. Same with the IRS...they will never call, email or text you.
It's not true that the IRS will never call you. If you have an ongoing matter with the IRS, they certainly can and will call you.

Oh puhleeze. Maybe I just have a suspicious nature but why didn't they make an effort to confirm. This doesn't sound unusual to me at all. I can't believe they fell for it. Giving money via phone to stranger? Meet with a judge? C'mon.

They could have called the Wade County Clerks office to see if there are current warrants open.
A good reason to have more than one phone line. 'I need to put you on hold while I find my Venmo pin number'.
We have a Cell Phone and a VOIP line. I don't know how to use Venmo anyway; no app gets put on my phone unless thoroughly vetted, and then there are only a very few.
Phone rings and I don't recognize the number, welcome to voice mail and our blocked number list.
Our sheriff's offices will do also. Better to check and make deals on the outside rather than risk the felony door knocking arrest.
Courts mail letters to jurors. But some people here are saying that the letter is sent by registered or certified. I feel certain that his not accure. At least not in my State. I've received jury notices before and they were sent regular mail. Not certified nor registered. Also, in my State there are several reasons why you may decline to serve. One is being age 65 and older. But, you still must respond to the notice.
Same where I live but sometimes we have trouble with mail getting put in the wrong mailbox and things like that
Anybody who is requesting money from you and pay through Venmo or any other source you know is a scam. I’m glad these people are okay and thank you for bringing it out to the media so others can learn from it.

Perfect example of people who have too much money . “ Just throw $1500 at it and it will go away…” To most people $1500 is a lot of money and we would do our due diligence before sending any money.
The fact that they ended up wasting $5000 is a combination of too much money and abject stupidity

yes i got a letter that was official, claimed they'd compensate for travel and loss wages, could email or fax for exemption if qualified, you are supposed to mail back a form that comes with it

The scammers use fear to control you. Does your heart race when you get a call, thinking for a minute that you're in trouble somehow? This is what you need to do. Your phone should let you know of a possible spam caller. Take it. Get used to their methods of scamming, the way they talk, the questions they ask. Desensitize yourself. I now have loads of fun screwing with them.

This is why I don't answer the phone if I don't know who it is. No cop is going to call your home and ask for money. If this had happened to me, I would have marched down to the courthouse and checked with the Jury Duty office. I'm very sorry this happened to them.

2 of our PA's had calls last year about this. One was running around trying to find coverage and told the boss why. She stopped her and said, no, don't do it. Call the police instead. Someone had gotten ahold of our providers phone list and was going down it.
No government department takes Venmo!!! Jury duty notices come by registered mail. If you don't receive a notice, it wasn't delivered, period. In my industry we have a motto, "trust, but verify". We always verify what needs to be verified by law.
Yeah... Jury duty notices here literally come on a postcard. They aren't wasting funds on registered mail, or even an envelope. If you don't show up, oh well, they don't do anything.
I refuse to answer my phone if it's not immediate family or work (and sometimes I still don't answer). My motto is, if they don't leave a voicemail they don't get a call back. Plus I get bill collectors calling for the person who had my number before me.
Don't even answer the phone!...and if they leave a message from the "sheriff's office". Look up the number and call to ask....never use the number the scammers leave.
Their pride was the cause for this humiliating fall. Even after getting duped they continue to state that if it happened to them it could happen to anybody. Elementary my dear Watson. They could looked up the number independently and called to verify. They are not money wise. Nor scam wise. To pay out $5000 so easily😮.
The thought that these two fell for that makes me question their ability to work in the medical field. Would you want them working on you?

These two are just out of touch. They’re educated, but not smart to what’s going on in the world obviously. This is why I educate my Mom constantly, so this doesn’t happen to her. So, sad! 😢

The next time you're on the phone with Verizon, ask them how it's possible that they have no idea where phone calls placed using their network are coming from, or who's making them.

Just laugh it off and ask for some paper work. Anything dealing with money ask for paper work. Phone calls and e-mail means reearch but no money without valid and confirmed paperwork or good research.
This same scam happened to my cousin in 2017. They scammed her out of $1700. She received a letter from them with official letterheads, followed by phone calls, while she was grieving for her deceased husband. She's not a gullible person normally, and not stupid. But it happened. This particular scam was very new at the time.

These poor folks gullible with a capital G. Nice people tend to be trusting. In what world do the cops call and tell you that you're going to be arrested? When my husband was in grad school, 35 years ago, someone tried a similar scam on us, calling in the middle of the night, claiming to be a police detective and accusing us of writing hot checks, telling us that we had to get several thousand dollars and meet him to pay the fines. (It turned out that our outgoing bill payments had been stolen, and that is where the scammer got the info on us.) He was angry and abusive, trying to scare us. Common sense says that cops are not going to call and warn you of impending arrest, so I dared him to come get us. (I was sleepy and angry.) We did report it to the cops, who told us that if it happened again, we should agree to meet him and then notify the cops to be there. There is a special room in Hell for scammers.
Most scammers depend on fear and urgency to get people to act impulsively - I get how good these scammers at getting personal data to make things seem legit, but NOTHING legit is that pressing that you have to send money immediately. Hang up or tell the scammers to give you a number that you will call back when you verify the information. This will change their tone quickly I guarantee you.

Law enforcement, IRS, Social Security will not just call you about anything. They will send you a letter by way of the United States Postal Service. Think before you react to a call. Apparently the Sheriff's Office number was spoofed.

They must be doing something shady to have fallen for that obvious scam.
A sheriff or court asking for cashapp payment? For 5k? You would think you'd have to pay in person in courthouse or at least their official website? No county or government agency will demand a Venmo payment over the phone!

I was selected for jury duty last year. I reported to the courthouse and spent three hours there before being dismissed. A few weeks later I received a check for $10.00 for my time. Now that's a scam! These people in this video are just plain stupid.

I'm always amazed at women who send their life savings to people they've only seen on the internet. Despite being warned and warned and warned about internet dating scams.
We have spoof phone calls that look like they are coming from the local hospital. The first time it happened, my husband panicked and called me bcuz I have a heart condition. He had missed the call and thought someone was calling to notify him of an emergency situation with my heart.

They should have known it was an insider job and not a random scammer calling. Who would know she had missed jury duty summons?
She was never summoned for jury duty though so it was just a pure scam that played on her fears due to her job. No inside job. Scammers use spoofing software that hijack other people’s phone numbers so they could make it appear they were calling from the courthouse. Doesn’t mean they actually were - they’re usually doing it from another country all together
It was a random scammer. The scammer just pretended that she missed jury duty, when she didn't even have jury duty (she wasn't even supposed to be at the courthouse on that date). It would be like if a scammer called you up and said that you missed jury duty on March 17th (or any random date they choose). Well, of course you weren't at the courthouse on that day, because the court never requested you to be there in the first place, as you didn't even have jury duty that day.
I am with Linda T. Additionally, I do wonder if it was an inside job, because he mentioned how they called him at work, and the number is hard to get.
Courts dont issue warrants for not serving jury duty.
I believe they can though. It would have been better if they had just chosen to call their local court system to verify what the scammers were saying.
Reminds me of a voicemail I once received from the "IRS", warning me I would "be placed in handcuffs by the cops" if I didn't pay "what I owed plus penalties" in two hours! 😂😂
A few years ago I one leaving voicemail after voicemail I have a warrant, what they didn’t know In the same week my 2nd set of security clearance was just completed for my job, I called them back but no answer 😂, I was ready to play some games with them
No… This wouldn’t happen to everyone. Especially not me… I’m so damn skeptical, even when I legit know a company is calling me about a matter, I tell them… “Let me call you right back”. I call the known number, and proceed with the conversation. Be it with the original caller or someone else. PEOPLE! Courts will send you a letter telling you to come in.

They are so right anybody could fall victim to a scam, their work requires them to do background checks, so they caught them at a vulnerable angle, and it sounds like emotionally they were going through something as well. Sounds like the timing of this is what got them. I wish they had discussed this with someone else. We should always discuss personal challenges to others. The Bible says their is safety in a multitude of wise council. Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11-14

Many scammers (here in MX) use private phone number, that their phone number does not show on the screen so, I do not answer any of those. In the phone screen it says "private number" and many times they can be from other countries.
Some other times, when I am waiting for someone's new call that is not in my phone list, I have answered to some scammers and they start their play. What I do is pretend that I can no listen anything and keep saying to them "hello, hello, hello...." :) they get discourage and hang up. Other times, I just hung up on them.
There are people in the world that love to give their money away. I never feel bad for people that get scammed. We have a brain for a reason. I am always amazed when I hear these stories.

I don't know about Raleigh, but it is unheard of where I live that the sheriff will be coming to throw your a$$ in jail because you missed jury duty.
