I am 74. In 1967 I bought a 1958 Mark VIII for $100.00 w/o an engine. Found an engine from an E and had it installed. Has less than $1,000 in it Drove it for a year and felt like I had a Silver Could. One real problem I had with it was the shop that worked on it could never get the power assist brakes sorted, so it took "three men and a boy" to stop it. Of all the other British cars I had owned in high school, including 3 XK-120's, for some reason, this was my favorite. Lovely ride.

    What a gorgeous Jaguar.
In its day this would have been the ultimate prestigious car.
This colour scheme was the upmarket for this car.

Used help my Dad clean one of these in Edgware NW London in the early 1960's. I did the inside, my Dad Simonized the outside for Mr Davis in Edgwarebury Lane. I could only ever dream of owning one.

This was similar to the Jaguar MkVIII used in Hitchcock's film, Vertigo driven by Kim Novak's character. I saw one go through a classic auction in Poole a couple of years ago and it had been stuck in a leaky garage for over 40 years and needed major restoration inside and out. I thought it would fetch about £3500 tops, but I think it went for nearer £18K. Very desirable it would seem.

@@austingreenough6396 - Vertigo has been rated as one of the best movies of all time, but I think most Hitchcock films were excellent.

My brother had one of these 20 years ago. He phoned me up and asked if he could put it on my drive for 2 weeks. 6 months later it was still there. I’ve never seen a car so big. It was easily bigger than a Rolls Royce. But what luxury. All walnut and hide. And when new, it was 2/3 rds the price of a Roller. I think that’s why Jaguar never did so well in the 60’s. They made them too cheap to compete with Mercedes etc. And also industrial action ruined the British motor industry. But what a fabulous engine though. I remember that Australian mini-series “The Thorn Birds “, Richard Chamberlain driving around in one. And also a couple of Hitchcock films featuring them. The cars the star, type of thing. My brothers stayed on my drive for 6 months. You couldn’t push it. It must have weighed easily 2 tons. Happy days.

Definitely a Mark VIII with a 3.4 engine as the Mark IX had a 3.8 as well as a Mark IX script on the boot lid.

Sacrilege. Do an LPG conversion by all means, but chuck the engine out and replace it with clunking great batteries? Should be a hanging offence.

Disagree about the mk9 comment. I had a 1958 mk8 many years ago. Absolutely identical to this one. The one piece screen came out for the 1958 model. One of the nicest cars i ever owned. Like driving a Rolls, but 15mpg was the norm, so swapped it for a Rover p4.
