Having watched your video, I feel I must point out one thing. Law&Order and it's various spin-offs like SUV were designed as what was once called a "Water Cooler" show. That being a show that was meant to be discussed around the workplace as to who was in the right and who was in the wrong. What we now know in the online age as "Engagement" These type of shows were meant to push buttons, and the fact that NBC is trying to block you from discussing it around the new onine water cooler, is just fucked up.
What I hate the most about this is that by portraying the case as affluent progressive white trans woman vs. poor disenfranchised black boy youth. It completly ignores the fact that largely it is Black Trans Women are typically the victims of hate crimes. It sort of portrays transness as a thing for well... Wealthy white people, which is an actual stigma faced by trans and queer black people. And it sort of does the usual black boys are more likely to be less progressive than there non-black peers. Which is qlso a stereotype. Its all really frustrating.
As a white trans person, this is something I try to stay aware of as much as possible. It's so easy to let privilege get to your head, especially when you enjoy certain privileges while also being a targeted minority. I need to try to remind myself more often that being white makes things significantly easier for me than for our other sisters.
@@swishfish8858 That's appreciated, but you shouldn't have to be the one constantly worrying and checking yourself over. The people who should, are unfortunately the ones least likely to do so.
I know this mostly talks about racism and transphobia, but the classism in SVU is palpable also Like it's always the poor working class people that are the villains
There was Davies, the rich, borderline-WASP (his Scottish kilt showed he wasn't a Saxon pig) lawyer from Westchester who brutalized transgender service providers.
There are a LOT of valid criticisms of SVU but I really don’t think that one is accurate. There are a LOT of rich and powerful rapists on the show, and those characters often use their class status against the women they victimize
@leonor29292 I was more meaning the casual villainisation of the working class and single mothers This episode particularly did things like: blaming the working class moms for not being present / no dad present, of having bad opinions, etc. The middle class family were also the opposition being the "reasonable / forgiving ones" Not to mention what the detective says when talking about the poorer schools - obviously class and race are linked in a way, so I think this could be read as racist also
@@nregames8447 Yeah I definitely get it. This episode in particular sucks. But I do think they at least tried to explore a difficult subject with a lot of nuances and intersecting identities. Impoverished people CAN be more prejudiced than middle class people with access to higher education, and they could have explored it in a better way
@@leonor29292 that's true I suppose! A lot of shows of this era were fairly casually classist, so I think I notice it more than I might otherwise E.g. some of the characters on Little Britain
I hate how they made Avery's character this rich white kid who's easily accepted by her parents. Yes, that is the case for some trans people, but not for many. It just pushes this narrative that being trans/queer is "white people sh!t" and a choice people make out of privilege. And the character is tragic anyways, so it also didn't really matter for the story 😭😭😭
Yeah it would be nice if at leas twe show Avery destroyed and her family and god beware some of the bystanders help her , thank god you are alive, thats what matters most, you vcan still have a future. Like evenn if it were a not bad off white family, that would be very humanizing drama to make it, no , there were still struggles. Or how parents talk how it wasnt easy at first and then it got better? To motivate looking forward that the reis a future. And then going to try to help reducing Darius sentence who maybe show him personally like what he thinks and his guilt? Like all of that are props and none characters whic his terrrible writing too
Yeah the way they chose to oppose black people and trans people just helps absolutely no one. Like your comment about “white people sh!t” perfectly captures what I was thinking, which is how a black trans teenager would feel watching this.
I really can't stand how they kept saying he's a good kid with a good heart. He walked up and started harassing a complete stranger walking in the park for what? Daring to exist? He committed a hate crime. "Good kids" don't commit hate crimes. And the way my eyes roll when they mention him going to church as a reason why he's good. That's not an inherently good thing, and could've possibly been a part what encouraged his transphobia in the first place.
American media has to portray christianity as an unalloyed good for some strange reason. They severely white wash both past and present sins of the churches (except versions of christianity which are on the outs at the time of the media being made) in order to paint christianity as a force for good.
Its fascinating that SVU chose not to contrast "he's a good kid that goes to church" with the inherent evilness of his actions. For one, that's an interesting narrative, and for two, it's an easy moral lesson.
Yeah, funny how that was often used as a defense for rapists, there was a famous at the time case about a rich white boy who raped a woman and got a slap on the wrist by a judge who is a known misogynist who explained his ruling as he didn’t want to ruin the perpetrator’s future because he’s a “good” kid and boys will be boys. It makes me sick. And it sounds like there was zero pushback against that narrative in this episode. This doesn’t even address the fact that trans women characters are treated as the ultimate woman in the fridge effing trope.
I hate knowing this, but there is another trans episode between this and the last one. Its about a girl who's father refuses to let her start HRT and the narrative (and Stabler) want her to accept that her father loves her because she was his son while also making her also be the victim of hatred and the system. Just in case you wanted to bridge the gap between both times SVU bungled transness. Edit: I saw this episode when it came out after I'd come out and started my own journey, and this was sadly something I didn't need to see considering how hard it was to come out
Oh a stabler one, i like he actually in series , really problematic? Doesnt makr that narrative any better, i lust like it more if that is actually so over the top its funny and clear if a cop is unhinged. Ok its the best i can say abot his episodes, he isnt acting as high and mighty, not without taken down ok. And at kleast not trying to be serious i think? Yes he sucks but the show kinda owns it often enough?
Being a writer, I would say that we know, intuitively, that it is our responsibility to say it. Years of conditioning might get some writers to break, and it's hard to see. But for most of us, it's a need, like food, water and shelter. We can't let injustice stand without speaking up.
Sad thing is there is a intersting premise in here, there is ALOT of transphobia in african american community thanks to old beliefs and stuff, if this wasn't a cop show i think there could have been a good episode of "just because you are victim doesn't mean you get to make others victims too"
And you for sure didnt end Averys life for it? Like tried manslaughter is bad enough. I was surprised she wasnt, but then you, why? That gets me, why at least have Avery alive if you still, just why? You dont need to have a dead person apearently for a case so, why? Its just why does EVERYONE in the crowd cheer him on, no confused, shocked or confused, all cheer him on, yay rassism, at least make them a diverse group reacting and not all cheering on that tried assault and manslaughter? And hey if they like Darius they could be little shits and deny all responsibility and that be it, and blame avery in, grr if she werent here then all would be ok, without bloody that big in your face transphobia. Why? Hell it could have been if , Avery actually got the focus to actually talk to him and not forgive him but , did your family saw what i went though, i wish nothing bad on you but i wont eve forgive you. Oh you have problems, you arent the only one. You werent suddenly sexually asaulted for being you. And why the adults thing? that has little to do with the entire issue. Ther could be legit Darius coming in terms and Avery, get through enough to talk and say that they wont wish him bad, but not forgive him ever.
Also this transphobia and queerphobia is often a direct consequence of colonialism, many Black/Blak and Indigenous groups had a wider view on gender before colonialism and where often taught this narrow mindset due to white people enforcing it on us
I hate this discourse with a passion. It is so overblown, and bigots and conservatives love sticking to the "black people are actually conservative" discourse. Maybe in the US there's a kernel of truth to it, but here in Brazil the black people are _so much better_ with LGBT+ stuff than the middle class white folk
@@marocat4749 Yeah and Avery isn't trying to make Darius another victim, it's the fucking the cops! I wish the cops got more gripe for being just flat out bigoted pricks.
Just curious as to why black people seem to get the most attention when it comes to transphobia when it’s the white community actively lobbying the government to “end transgenderism”? Not saying some black people aren’t bigoted in this area cause they are but when it comes to hate, whites are again leading the charge.
Avery’s death served no purpose in this episode and I agree that if she’d lived we could have turned what started as a train wreck actually turn into healing but SVU doesn’t play that way. It saddens me. Also when are they going to actually cast a trans actor for a role? Not that I see that going any better with the writing on this POS show.
the massive "make up a guy" energy of having a character who we're told is totally an ally and defended a gay kid from bullying but also absolutely would do a hate crime on a random trans girl. (no, i don't believe SVU is capable of understanding that one can be transphobic and be fine with cis gay people)
That got me, oh at least itrs only attempted manslaughter, and sexual asault, and then, that got me, why the hell. It should be about his guilt and coming on term its no excuse, not what else.
My god, can media do ANYTHING with trans people other than portraying them as sex workers. I'm trans, 26, never even been in a relationship, let alone had sex. Jesus christ, this is getting old. In hindsight, this might have something to do with me being ace but still, IRRELEVANT.
Aw man this is too much. Racism, elitism, transphobia, all in one episode?? I love your videos, I just can't handle this right now, I'm just...so tired. I really hope you'll cover something trans-inclusive soon, I think a lot of animated shows and cartoons do well with this sorta stuff. The Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur episode was great.
I honestly never even really saw the pattern until getting into more of Lily's videos, and now I see it EVERYWHERE. Like holy crap can we be ANYTHING else?
Hi, As a black man I don't say this in defense of this show or the writing. IDK maybe you've seen it. I'm still working my way through your videos. Anyway. John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, has a law & order episode. Think they have a few. Point is the writers know it's crap. They apparently suggest nuanced ideas. The problem is Dick Wolf. He's on record, he will not make the police look bad. It's a whole thing going back years. Across multiple Dick Wolf shows. Please don't misunderstand me. I don't watch this show for obvious reasons. But I take joy in at least knowing why it sucks. Take care and have a good one🫡
I think i watched that episode but it is very telling through all of his shows i genuinely wouldnt be suprised if he gets props or runs his scripts through the police dept ik marvel does with the us military and so did top gun hell even borat did it with the cia alot of these shows that are suppose to show these government bodies in unconventional ways are propaganda media , you should watch skip inros video on the ncis and isreal , he also has a video on we got copaganda and a whole playlist breaking down popular shows copaganda .
@yassine8935 Yoh, You are correct. He has indeed worked directly with police. Who in turn absolutely love his work. So even more agencies work with him. Yeah, it sucks in just about all the ways it could. And yep, Skip Intro does good work. Take care and have a good one 🫡
Jeez, this is bad. The episode would have been so much better if Darius had stepped in to protect Avery from the beginning, but he wasn't able to save her from the fall, and stayed by her side while getting his sister to call 9-1-1. However, he is still accused of almost killing her, and Avery is the one who comes to his defense. Because of this, the two of them spend a lot of time together, and bond over their love of comics. Maybe Avery also gets to properly know the sister and becomes a cool older friend for her. Maybe the parents meet each other, and become good friends. And the most important part: Darius's (actual) innocence is proven, and Avery doesn't die! I know that would take writers who actually care about good storytelling and basic human rights, but this still could have been an uplifting story with two young marginalized people connecting and supporting each other. One can daydream, I guess.
Finally, you cover the episode that made me stop watching SVU! (That season was also inexplicably just racist all around, including an episode on people protesting police brutality where the B-story was an unnamed, unrevealed black r_pe suspect victimizing white women that the cops never found and Olivia giving a speech about how the cops need more respect🤢).
Eventually every police procedural devolves into (that's if it doesn't blatantly start off as) a fantasy show that takes place in the alternate universe where the Blue Lives Matter people are correct, and they start to require more suspension of disbelief than anything involving hobbits or dragons. I've seen proof that witches exist: I consider myself to be one, and many of my friends do so as well. I've seen proof that princes exist: pick up any given British tabloid and they'll have an entire section devoted to them. I've yet to see proof that good cops exist, and I'm saying that as someone who has the misfortune of being related to multiple cops.
The creators of the Law and Order shows have a hard on for the police that almost borders on the grá you find in dictatorships for the likes of the Gestapo or the NKVD.
I have no idea how I watched this garbage as a teenager. The ever escalating misery parade with a juicy side of copaganda is just...gross. Also, cute that they think "goes to church" is a reason the kid can't be a transphobe.
I think a lot about the episode that the guy who played Angel in RENT was in and how as a teen I was like OMG THEY DID SUCH A GREAT JOB SHOWING THE CYCLE OF ABUSE when really it's like. No, they demonized an already vulnerable group. AGAIN
God, I've had this episode stuck in my craw for nearly a decade now. I remember watching it (because I tended to watch network TV at my overnight shifts back in the day) and being kinda blown away by how racist it was. This was also 2 episodes before "Community Policing," an episode that was functionally about how cops need to be able to kill unarmed black men without consequences to be able to do their job effectively. Like, it specifically showed off issues that exist with the police "shoot first, then shoot some more" attitude toward "dangerous suspects," correctly acknowledges that Internal Affairs exists to protect the police from consequences, and showed how the state will protect police from those consequences even if they somehow have to put on a show about trying to find justice. The fact that the cops get any kind of scrutiny is portrayed as a tragedy while ignoring the fact that the police literally never find the suspect they were after in the first place. 2015 SVU was extra racist. You pretty much hit every single issue this episode has on the head perfectly. Great Video.
stuff like this and the prevailing attitude of "Things would be so much better if we got rid of the press and defense attorneys" was what really turned me off of this and similar shows.
Initially after watching your video i was thinking „He honestly deserves being tried as an adult and to get the full force of law!“ Thinking a bit further i noticed that this thought stems from the feeling that the biggest spreaders of hate against trans people do not face consequences at all and that makes me mad.
I love seeing your videos. Having them in the background while I'm at school makes it a bit more bearable. Can't hear the slurs I'm being called if I'm hearing about the slurs SVU said lol.
Looking forward to getting to the next stage of your life on your behalf, met most of my cool out lgbtq+ people after high school adult without even trying and they've all got fantastic cats! Hope it improves sooner anyway obviously, good luck!
39:00 so i used to watch this show a lot as like an outlet for the trauma caused by abuse and neglect that i experienced as a child. It felt good to see the victims get justice for what was done to them, even if there are some caveats, which was something i never got to experience. It was comforting to see that there was somebody who would care ab what was done to me if i were just in different circumstances. Im not saying its completely logical but i was a kid and kids r obv irrational. Idk y other ppl watch the show but thats y i was watching it at least.
Yes! Literally I loved this show 'cause it felt close to me, there was not other show who humanized that much the victims and was so comforting (still is)
I'm always so impressed how accurate Lily can predict these episodes considering she's clearly watching the episode as she records and couldn't possibly know where the episode is going because she's never seen it before. 😋
These SVU episodes are so depressing that it kind wrap back around to being funny. Its just so absurdly negative its like a catastrophizing cartoon character.
I still remember that even in episodes without minoritys it was really bad. In an episode they had close to no evidence for their offender but they were portrayed as hero's for locking him up anyways. Like is this really positive representation for cops if they can just jail anybody they think is guilty?
If I'm being real as a true crime fan (tho not as out there as a lot of people are), SVU is somehow way more miserable an experience. Good true crime creators are respectful to the victims which SVU definitely isn't. It's just dramatized misery and actually watching families and victims me torn apart with no real resolution is a lot more upsetting than just hearing a secondhand recounting of it. Plus since it's fiction there's not even a sense of "this should be uncomfortable, real people suffered". It's just miserable for the sake of it
Yes cold care is really good about, letttin the victims be a person, and sometimes they are a terrible person , because that happens too. Bu its about people and figuring out what went on what wasnt obvious. Crime stories can be actually very good at having a mystery , and the characters and fassades be a big issue, and that dismantle biases even. Also Damn Lili and the , actor who played maybe fusco in person of interest, the a bit flawed but good dude. That are nice to follow
not related to svu , but will you cover squid game at any point ? the addition of a trans character in season two was surprising , and a lot of people argued about them casting a cis man for it (in part due to the cultural differences between countries) , but at the same time a lot of people feel like the character was handled pretty well . i say at any point since her storyline isn't over yet and the next season won't be out until summer .
I think a lot of Americans are ok with excusing transphobia from other countries cause they see other cultures as inherently regressive and inferior compared to ours. The only “cultural difference” being cited is “they’re more bigoted than us”, but there’s an implication that they don’t know better, so it’s ok to let it slide. It’s a ridiculous argument tbh
Not to script doctor an old ass episode of SVU, but I think they should have made Avery and her family Black. It would be a much more interesting character to show her intersectional identities, to show the way that transphobia AND racism are endemic to the justice system, there wouldn't be the same Black vs Trans people narrative, and maybe have an interesting take on how it feels to exist in a community that doesn't accept parts of you. I know it's wayyy too optimistic to hope that SVU could do intersectionality at all well, but I can imagine a world in my head where this episode was interesting and had something to say.
What makes no sense to me is that they claim they have to make an example of Darius because they can't "wait" for another case where a trans person was assaulted or killed. The show's set in NYC. Unfortunately, they probably wouldn't have to wait too long to find a case of that involving adults.
TH-cam needs a better algorithm to place their ads, because multiple times it cut to an ad on the word “racist”, so I’d hear “racist [brand name]”, which is probably not what those brands want for their image
I remember another trans SVU episode, after this one i think but i could be wrong. A black hip hop artist's girlfriend is killed, and he loves her, but refuses to admit the record label killed her. He and the record label didn't want him to be considered "gay".
❤Merlin I was an avid SVU watcher growing up, although as an adult there's a lot to hate in hindsight. At the time, it was media where I was more likely to see lgbtq+ characters. I also had family and friends who had experience with that kind of trauma so it was content that seemed like it could help me understand those situations better. It was one of the first places I saw SWorkers portrayed sympathetically and as complex people. The show is over the top and copoganda, but it also included victims dealing with a justice system that was unfair and failed people. I read a book about John Money and the twins he abused growing up and I loved knowing that the episode about it was there to highlight how monstrous what he did was and it ends with the kid being happy to start living as a boy. For all its problems, it did offer some kernels that were valuable to me growing up and Mariska Hargitay has made real efforts to help with the backlog of rape kits, a thing she learned about as a result of working on the show, so that's something. But yeah, great to see people critiquing it's glaring problems.
I also heard of people who have history with SA who, even when it's silly and fake and copaganda, find it comforting that in this show there are police who DO care
Lily, this might be one of your best videos yet. You really did not pull any punches when you just KNOW those writers are patting themselves on the back for how ✨human✨ they presented the 🥺poor trans and Black people 🥺 like genuinely you knocked it out of the park
Tbf, as a trans woman that enjoys true crime, it's a genre consumed mainly by women not just out of morbid curiosity (emphasis on morbid), but it's also a way to learn and protect ourselves. However I do agree that people who enjoy fictionalized versions like SVU are only watching it for the misery porn.
2 things 1) i hope you're feeling better 2) i really hope you cover SVU S10EP14 "Transition" i remember that episode aired alot on cable when i was a teen
I'm so thankful of not being in the usa so I'm still able to see this, great video btw and to NBC a local saying from my country with all the love: "Váyanse para la picha"
Hi Lily, happy your video is back up. I'm trans non-binary, and used to love SVU. Within the last year, I've rewatched it from Season 1 up to somewhere in season 17 I think? I agree with a lot of what you said. SVU doesn't handle the topics it wants to approach in any meaningfully nuanced way. There's an improvement from the first "trans episode" to this one. And I believe there is a third that I hope you'll cover as well - I don't remember what it's called, but it's to do with a younger trans person, HRT, something, something. I agree both trans people and black people suffer in this episode - that the two topics are brought up, but neither fleshed out enough for the audience to conclusively say "wow, the system sucks for both groups" and you would only see that conclusion if it's something you, yourself, think about often, have considered, and want the world to see as well. I really disliked how they explained trans identities in this episode, especially since previous LGBTQ+ episodes have thrown slurs, prejudice, harassment, and "the A is for ally" around. I wish they'd thought about that more, and had explained it better, as the episode is clearly TRYING to normalise trans existence and to showcase how society treats us. I have 2 notes: 1. I believe the reason they keep asking "why did he do it" is an attempt to make the audience consider societal factors - the parents being prejudiced, lack of normalisation, and the extreme prejudice towards trans people levied by politicians and (many) famous people. I think that's why it's repeatedly asked, and why it's not really answered. It's left to the audience to make that connection, but that assumes that the general audience has a tendency to criticise and self-reflect when it comes to societal norms. 2. Regarding how anyone can enjoy SVU and it being the same audience that makes up true crime audiences - yes... it tends to be mostly AFAB people who consume both. A large part of that is because especially AFAB people are desensitised from violence against femme people from a very young age. We are instructed to be vigilant, to know what to look out for, etc... Listening to or watching true crime stories often informs us on what evidence is useful in tracking victims or perps down. Similarly, watching something like SVU puts us in positions where we can relate to the victims. I understand you consider it to be farming of misery, and it seems like you don't understand the enjoyment of it... It''s not a "this makes me happy" enjoyment. It is a "this is interesting or it makes me think or it is informative" type of enjoyment - at least for me. Oh, and PS: trans victims are considered special victims because the SVU are supposed to be better informed and trained to deal with schmex workers, minorities, and queer people... which is poorly reflected in this episode, and previous episodes, regarding trans people.
Makes me think of something Shaun said in a video... That suffering has no purpose other than to make you suffer... People don't learn as much from history and misery and atrocities as we wish we did
I watched on patreon for free but I'll absolutely watch here again ❤ thank you for fighting so hard to show these shows what they've actually written with no thought or care.
Honestly svu is a feel bad show. Where after you watch it you just feel awful. And I want to mention that I honestly like the idea that Avery should have stayed alive and forgave Darien in person
Why is it so hard to just leave ppl alone even if they are “different” or whatever ? I will never understand attacking someone without being like actually physically or verbally provoked
I appreciate your high tolerance for bigotry targeted directly at us. I have few friends who can consume this stuff like I do, and it’s lovely to have your analysis

Rewatched the video now that it's available again and am hoping liking and commenting something will help it get more traction. I think I watched this episode like a decade ago on Netflix as background noise while I was doing homework or playing video games in highschool and only remembered the basic premise so it was nice to have it dissected by someone who was paying more attention and is better informed than my teenage self on media representations of trans people. It's always good to have stuff like that recontextualized instead of just passively stored in the recesses of my brain somewhere. Thanks for making these videos, they're always informative and entertaining, if not at times a little bleak ❤
this episode reminds me of the book "the 57 bus" which has a similar premise, although, SVU is like, a Bad Ending of the situation. in the book, the trans white kid + the cis black kid actually work things out iirc and nobody dies.
Amazing video, I love seeing you doing a catalog of trans representation in tv shows. A lot of ones I thought would be bad were good, and more I thought were good, bad
28:32 Ok, while the femur is the hardest bone to break and breaking it causes a lot of problems, but I don't think a broken bone is the thing that would suddenly kill you out of nowhere. Especially if you fell off a bridge.
This is unrelated to the video but if you want a book with an actual case like this that is all facts I recommend you check out the 57 Bus, the writer interviewed everyone in the case and use actual facts. It does what this does but actually well and where both sides are the victims.

A lot of shows of this era were fairly casually classist, so I think I notice it more than I might otherwise
E.g. some of the characters on Little Britain
Like your comment about “white people sh!t” perfectly captures what I was thinking, which is how a black trans teenager would feel watching this.
exactly my first thought about the framing too
Is this why so many people of color voted conservative/bigoted this election? Cuz of subtle propaganda stuff like this?
@@pattersondhGood point. The _SVU_ writers can't even do hackneyed writing right!
There is no hate like christian love.
Edit: I saw this episode when it came out after I'd come out and started my own journey, and this was sadly something I didn't need to see considering how hard it was to come out
I remember that, with the teacher that commits a violent crime against the dad. Or was it a counselor maybe.
@@justanotheronlineobserver3387 i think she was a school counselor
Oh a stabler one, i like he actually in series , really problematic?
Doesnt makr that narrative any better, i lust like it more if that is actually so over the top its funny and clear if a cop is unhinged. Ok its the best i can say abot his episodes, he isnt acting as high and mighty, not without taken down ok. And at kleast not trying to be serious i think? Yes he sucks but the show kinda owns it often enough?

THIS ☝️, @LilySimpson.
Did any of these writers ever listen to this moral: “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it” zero steps forward 1 million steps back
Par for the course for a lot of copaganda shows D:
These writers ran backwards with both middle fingers up at these communities
Being a writer, I would say that we know, intuitively, that it is our responsibility to say it. Years of conditioning might get some writers to break, and it's hard to see. But for most of us, it's a need, like food, water and shelter. We can't let injustice stand without speaking up.
How many steps it takes to go around the surface of the Earth to get to the exact point they started, only they did it all backwards...
@@SavageMinnow What's the injustice brother?
SVU doesn't do "healing"
"Queen Elizabeth is dead! Both of them!"
I come for the media analysis, but stay for the random funny.
the massive "make up a guy" energy of having a character who we're told is totally an ally and defended a gay kid from bullying but also absolutely would do a hate crime on a random trans girl. (no, i don't believe SVU is capable of understanding that one can be transphobic and be fine with cis gay people)
When the trans character not immediately dying is a win, that’s concerning
Oh and they died
@EmSquemsShame on me for not lowering my expectations enough, I guess...
Am I alone in thinking that this was actually worse than if she'd just died in the cold open? Certainly more cruel.
She barely got any screen time or agency before she died too, just there to be a victim
Me when I comment before watching the video
Hi,
As a black man I don't say this in defense of this show or the writing.
Man who trusts a guy named Dick Wolf to run their show
I think i watched that episode but it is very telling through all of his shows i genuinely wouldnt be suprised if he gets props or runs his scripts through the police dept ik marvel does with the us military and so did top gun hell even borat did it with the cia alot of these shows that are suppose to show these government bodies in unconventional ways are propaganda media , you should watch skip inros video on the ncis and isreal , he also has a video on we got copaganda and a whole playlist breaking down popular shows copaganda .
@yassine8935 Yoh,
You are correct.

When a cop say heshe: ":)"
When a poor black lady says heshe: "That's not the issuee"
This is also the episode that made me stop watching the show back when it premiered.
As a European atheist, I am always sickened by this idea that's prevalent in the US, that going to church is an indication of a good person.
I think a lot about the episode that the guy who played Angel in RENT was in and how as a teen I was like OMG THEY DID SUCH A GREAT JOB SHOWING THE CYCLE OF ABUSE when really it's like. No, they demonized an already vulnerable group. AGAIN

It literally IS all the churchgoers that are LGBT-phobic, that's what they're taught
@@TheMKCrab
Yeah, the show also really hates activists and the legal and constitutional rights of defendants.
jumpscared by Robert Sean Leonard lmao??? i had this on in the background and heard his voice, and just went "WILSON???? FROM HOUSE???"
YEAH I I DID THAT TOO?? Wilson, Pookie, what are you doing here??
Same here! "Oh, Wilson's here!"
Initially after watching your video i was thinking „He honestly deserves being tried as an adult and to get the full force of law!“
Thinking a bit further i noticed that this thought stems from the feeling that the biggest spreaders of hate against trans people do not face consequences at all and that makes me mad.
I agree, izukusbrokenbones
39:00 so i used to watch this show a lot as like an outlet for the trauma caused by abuse and neglect that i experienced as a child. It felt good to see the victims get justice for what was done to them, even if there are some caveats, which was something i never got to experience. It was comforting to see that there was somebody who would care ab what was done to me if i were just in different circumstances. Im not saying its completely logical but i was a kid and kids r obv irrational. Idk y other ppl watch the show but thats y i was watching it at least.
Yeah, SVU used to feel really cathartic. It's like a fantasy - the cops actually do something about abuse.
Yes! Literally I loved this show 'cause it felt close to me, there was not other show who humanized that much the victims and was so comforting (still is)
Calling Stabler 'the last guy' as if Ice T's character was a replacement when they were both on the show together for 11 years...
The dying felt so unnecessary, like seriously SVU?
I'm always so impressed how accurate Lily can predict these episodes considering she's clearly watching the episode as she records and couldn't possibly know where the episode is going because she's never seen it before. 😋
These SVU episodes are so depressing that it kind wrap back around to being funny. Its just so absurdly negative its like a catastrophizing cartoon character.
The actor isn't cis, though they may have identified as cis at the time. I know and work with them.
I’d love to know more about this as a trans person. Is it there acting in this episode that made them relise their identity?
Oh, really? What's their name :0 and how do they identify?
I hate that when I watched this when it came out I was just happy a trans person was on tv and wasn't a bad guy...
We need a show starring a trans person made by trans people and for trans people...
Pose
Sense8
i recommend "sort of"
Laverne Cox has a show coming out that's pretty close to that soon
Nobody wants that, it would be canceled right away. People genuinely don’t care about trans people
I still remember that even in episodes without minoritys it was really bad.
I'd say it's best written character in the season
I think a lot of Americans are ok with excusing transphobia from other countries cause they see other cultures as inherently regressive and inferior compared to ours. The only “cultural difference” being cited is “they’re more bigoted than us”, but there’s an implication that they don’t know better, so it’s ok to let it slide.
It’s a ridiculous argument tbh
SVU ELECTRIC BOOGALOO. also hope you are feeling better Lily!
Lilly's dropping some awesome rap at 00:16
Have you covered the trans twins episode yet? Yikes SVU has a lot of transphobia who woulda guessed
Crazy enough they got a seed for it from a real life medical case.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Reimer
Ouch. I guess I know the reason why my mom stopped watching this show.
My mom didnt ☠️☠️☠️
SVU again?! The video hasn't even started yet and I'm already scared

I was an avid SVU watcher growing up, although as an adult there's a lot to hate in hindsight.
It has a few gems here and there but taken as a whole it just hurts me
I also heard of people who have history with SA who, even when it's silly and fake and copaganda, find it comforting that in this show there are police who DO care
SVU: where all my hopes and dreams go to die.
There's always something messed up that happens on these shows. They never just get some beer and go to the beach
Lily, this might be one of your best videos yet. You really did not pull any punches when you just KNOW those writers are patting themselves on the back for how ✨human✨ they presented the 🥺poor trans and Black people 🥺 like genuinely you knocked it out of the park
This could have been a story to introduce people to restorative justice programs and how they can change lives and communities.
Nobody, especially cops believes that it is possible
Tbf, as a trans woman that enjoys true crime, it's a genre consumed mainly by women not just out of morbid curiosity (emphasis on morbid), but it's also a way to learn and protect ourselves. However I do agree that people who enjoy fictionalized versions like SVU are only watching it for the misery porn.
You ever wonder if shows like this only last so long because they run 8 hours a day? Like "it can't get low views if it's the only thing we ever air!"
Those damn Walnuts. Hope you feel better Lily!

2) i really hope you cover SVU S10EP14 "Transition" i remember that episode aired alot on cable when i was a teen
I'm so thankful of not being in the usa so I'm still able to see this, great video btw and to NBC a local saying from my country with all the love: "Váyanse para la picha"
Wait, so was it blocked in specifically the US??
At this point, the bar is in hell. Somehow they still manage to limbo under it.
Two 2️⃣ videos about transphobia in Law and Order svu. I love ❤️ this content Lily.
Well when a show has been on for a hundred years you're gonna have plenty to work with lol.
I have 2 notes:
People don't learn as much from history and misery and atrocities as we wish we did
The bar in this episode needs us to call 811 for us to find it
Lol call before you dig to find it!
I have few friends who can consume this stuff like I do, and it’s lovely to have your analysis
ahhhhhhh im so glad u got this video back up!!! maybe it's not a bad idea to have a team of volunteers (or paid if thats feasible) for fighitng copyright claims? im really proud of you for pushing back against their BS but i wish u didn't have to. u rock lily
awwww shit… the last one was so hard to watch, i know we’re in for some reeeeaaaal bigoted stuff. and to be let down as someone who grew up watching SVU with family 🙃
Law and Order is basically just: "Screw non-fascists and everybody not wealthy."
In the US, and can see it.
Saw it free on your patreon when you posted it-
Glad to see this is back up, now.
im so scared, yay!!! also glad youre feeling better !
No wonder Americans view on justice is twisted because of coppaganda shows like this trash.
it’s really funny seeing all my mum’s cop and medical shows featured on this channel.
Once Squid Game ends, I would love to see you review how the show handled race and trans character
this episode reminds me of the book "the 57 bus" which has a similar premise, although, SVU is like, a Bad Ending of the situation. in the book, the trans white kid + the cis black kid actually work things out iirc and nobody dies.
they did feel very similar, but that book helped figure out that I was ace and this show helped make me sad
afaik this svu episode was based on the story of Sasha Fleischman
OH MY GOD WE ARE EATING GOOD THIS MONTH THANK U LILY

Amazing video, I love seeing you doing a catalog of trans representation in tv shows. A lot of ones I thought would be bad were good, and more I thought were good, bad
Could you do the trans episode of babysitters club? I was only able to watch the first half but it seemed like ok representation
I just had to do this one sped all the way up; I just can't dwell on _these_ kinds of shows any more than I have to.
I'm glad I watched Monk instead.
It’s back? You won the copyright strike? Hooray!
Screw NBC for making this episode and trying to silence criticism though.

This is unrelated to the video but if you want a book with an actual case like this that is all facts I recommend you check out the 57 Bus, the writer interviewed everyone in the case and use actual facts. It does what this does but actually well and where both sides are the victims.
