    When I was a little kid, when TV was first starting out, some people believed that the images that we saw on the TV set were actually beings that could come through the tube and get you; it was really quite frightening, in fact they did and Outer limits on that!

      @@ChanMan-mm7fe Yes, the OUTER LIMITS episode "O.B.I.T." showed a scene in which a young soldier inadvertently tunes in to a forbidden frequency on a monitoring device with a round screen and an alien emerges from it and strangles him!

    That TV on the left is like the one my Grandmother had in her house back in early sixties when I was a kid, although it was old it still had worked!

      Wow that's lucky! I've been tinkering with my set since 2002. The vertical still acts up occasionally.

      classicradios how do you play your old sets? They seem to
      Play so clear without retrace lines or buzzing. Do you have a video stabilizer hooked up?

      @@BlondieSL Oh yes...Every black beauty in both sets. Didn't test all resistors but replaced a few while troubleshooting. Only have the console in my collection today. Table version was sold years ago.

    I am an old timer, who has fixed a lot of Tv Sears and have never seen these models. I like the porthole look, nothing pretentious there.

      Advertised as “The Giant Circle Screen” the TV has a unique look and is a favorite in our home. Thanks for watching!

    Someone mentioned "Zenith" brand televisions today, and I was curious to know if Zenith was still making TV's in 2019. So, as I was reading the wiki page, I saw the "porthole" TV section and wanted to see a picture or video of the product, and I found this HD video. Thanks for uploading in HD quality. I really thought that watching a moving picture on a round TV screen would be awkward, but it is actually aesthetically pleasing to me. Perhaps because the human eye is round and not rectangular?! I'm not sure, but I like it. I appreciate this trip back in time. Thanks again and regards.

      Thanks for tuning in and watching “The giant circle screen of 1950” as it was advertised, all 12 inches of it. I sold the tabletop version but the console is still going strong here in the collection.

    A Zenith "porthole" TV is the perfect compliment to a Zenith "black dial" console radio!

    70 years ago someone with money decided to purchase two TVs one for their living room and one for their bedroom and probably went to a Department store that specialized in Zenith. They now spend most of their free time in their graves and haunting the people who restored their TVs.

    It's either the way the light reflects on them but the one on the right has a sharper picture. It must have the CRT with less hours clocked on it.

    I bought and restored the one on the left. 12lp4 was dead. Luckily I had a spare. Flyback was going (it whistled from arcing). Flybacks for these sets were a common failure point and are impossible to find. So, I sold it. Too bad! I love portholes!

      No Flyback issues with my Portholes so far, I’ll run my remaining porthole (on right) until it stops working.
      Currently having some vertical hold issues but nothing serious. I also have a 12LP4 installed, The original 12Up4 was dead. Thanks for tuning in!

      12LP4 is CRT?? What is difference from 12UP4? Thank you.
      (Amazed that H and He and other small gas atoms have not migrated through the CRT glass and prevented them from operating.)

    Do you think these TVs could be hooked to a converter to work with modern digital devices like a PS4? Maybe a cable box?

    • @wurly1100
      @wurly1100  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've connected my vintage TV's to a cable box and DVD players. You will need a 75 ohm to 300 ohm transformer ($3 part) and some kind of RF modulator or old VHS player with RCA in's and Coaxial/TV Out. Never owned a PS4 so I have no idea on that.

  • @dreed1941
    @dreed1941 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Could you tell me how you get the movie to be displayed onto the screen? Do you use a DVD player?

    • @wurly1100
      @wurly1100  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Derek Dreed
      I use a 75ohm transformer on the tv antenna terminals, coax out from that to an RF modulator with a DVD player connected. RF modulator coax out to TV. Hope that helps.

      I'm pretty sure TV's in the US has the same type of terminal inputs used from the 1950's up to the early 80's and stop showing up on television sets after getting replaced with coaxle cables.
