    I got the same Breville Smart Oven based on this recommendation, overall it's worked great. However, over time, oil eventually gunked up around the convection fans, which now makes a loud whirring sound when on. Meanwhile the oven is not designed to be owner-serviceable--the fans are not easily accessible, and the oven as a whole uses clips and pins that are difficult if not impossible to put back together if taken apart.
    If you're making toast and things that don't splatter it should be fine, and I still use it as a normal toaster oven, but just be warned that if anything fails it's very difficult to address.

    • @peggyrbaldwin
      @peggyrbaldwin ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We had problems with convection and loud noises too, but Breville had us send it back. There was a charge, but not anywhere near the cost of the original oven. They sent a brand new oven and it’s been going longer than the original one.

    I bought a Smart Oven in 2015 along with a DuxTop Gold induction cooker. I've kept it going ever since; replaced a fuse once in a super-simple repair. These two appliances have almost completely replaced my garbage Amana electric range that came with the house when I bought it in 2003. The SmartOven will cook nearly anything, takes the quarter sheet pan like a champ, and is very energy efficient while doing it.

      Find ATK's toaster oven review from about three years ago. Both videos are based on the same equipment review from 2019 but the earlier one is a bit more detailed. That said, things changed between the recording of the two segments in that the "Best Buy" model they initially recommended has since been discontinued which is why there is no "Best Buy" mentioned here. And since this clip was recorded a bit over a year ago for the ATK TV show, ATK has tested two additional toaster oven models and one of those by Cuisinart is now recommended. ATK has included links to all the models they currently recommend. Of the three(Cuisinart, DeLonghi and Breville, the Breville seems to be the cheapest overall and therefore the "Best Buy". There was a fourth model by Calphalon that was also recommended but it seems to be missing from the Calphalon website at this time which might mean it's been discontinued. An air fryer toaster oven model with almost the same model number is there, but it's not the model ATK tested for this review.

    Never had a toaster oven before.
    Don’t have a ton of counter space.
    But I picked up the Breville oven the first time they recommended it.
    It’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. It preheats in about 4 minutes. It’s just as accurate as my large oven, and it’s convection.
    It fits a quarter sheet pan perfectly, but I might try to get a bigger one to fit a half sheet pan.
    Here’s the one and only downside (other than the counter space).
    After about 6 years, the convection fan is getting a little loud and will probably fail soon. The oven will work without the fan. But I looked online, this is a common problem. Wish they would fix it.
    I’d still recommend it.

      @johnhpalmer6098 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had one of their Oster toasters, bought it in 2017, or 18 and it barely lasted 2 years before it failed completely, not the element itself, but the circuit board and would not always lock the lever when pushed down, nor did it release and the final straw was it caused the toast to begin to catch on fire one morning. I bought a Cuisinart basic white toaster and it's been great, going on 3 years I think now.
      A major surprise was the cheap toaster I bought in 2005, I think, a red plastic shelled Farberware unit at Big Lots and it toasted toast quite well, and reliably until the heating element finally went on one side of one slot, killing the toaster, never mind it was getting all faded on part of one side from years of exposure to the western sun in my kitchen.

    I'm getting ready to buy a new/replacement toaster oven and was surprized to not find my Hamilton Beach x-large oven 31107D as a top contender.
    This will be my third od this 311 model. It works superbly even for large casseroles. I even make the ATK deep dish pan pizza (10 inch cast iron) every weekend.
    I do offer these tips for all larger toaster ovens...
    1. Use an oven thermometer if actual temperature is important.
    2. Use a small pizza tile or small cast iron pan to help stabilize the temperature when putting in a large, cold casserole dish.
    3. Use a good timer with alarm and set it to a short time... say 40 min out of an hour. Then rotate the pan/dish/pot and cook for the remainder of time.
    4. Take notes on your cooking tiem and temperature settings. Adjust as needed. Most of us cook the same several meals over and over. Cook these according to your notes.
    5. When it is hot - put your toaster oven outside and cook your meal while you keep the kitchen cooler.

    • @S23K
      @S23K ปีที่แล้ว

      I got the Hamilton-Beach model ATK used to recommend and I was extremely disappointed; toast takes forever, if it’s hearty bread like a sourdough it doesn’t brown at all but simply dehydrates, oven temp is well below the setting, the tray that came with it has a convex rectangle for who knows what reason … I could go on. I’m glad they are recommending something else now.

    I'm sure it didn't make the cut because of the chicken requirement, but the best toaster ovens I've ever used in my life were from panasonic's "FlashXpress" line. They're infrared ovens so they don't have any preheating time and they're basically like a better version of a microwave.

    • @sandrah7512

      I was going to comment on this as well.
      The FlashXpress really is an excellent toaster oven.
      I find it a bit odd that they decided to go for the giant “smart oven” type category as opposed to a more traditionally sized toaster oven.

    I find that different breads toast at different rates, depending probably on the varied amount of sugar and stuff in them. My Oster toaster oven seems to have very good temperature control. Pizza comes out perfect and very even without turning it. It does a great job on chicken thighs. It's large enough that I rarely use the regular oven. My only two beefs are that you can't change time or temperature without turning it off and the beeping sounds when starting and finishing are far too loud.

      Very happy to go the next day and pick it up for $50.

    Interesting, but more info is needed. I was considering splurging on the Wolf oven, but then read that for its very expensive price, items such as door springs are NOT replaceable, and Wolf's response is for you to shell out for another expensive oven! Other oven manufacturers would not provide a part number so you could easily replace a simple item, but would charge you $215.00 to repair a door spring. I expect a fairly expensive appliance to be made to be serviced, to not easily catch on fire (a problem on some) - and I greatly prefer items made in the USA. Currently considering the GE Couture -

    I’m sure the Breville is wonderful - but for those who don’t want to spend $200, I can recommend the Black & Decker 4 slice toaster oven. It runs around $40.
