    Using these free programs is also a good way to test the waters of trying to switch to linux. Get used to using the programs on an OS you already know, then if you decide to ditch Windows, it will make the transition so much smoother. Instead of trying to learn new programs on top of trying to learn a whole new OS, which on it's own is a BIG learning curve.

    • @certs743
      @certs743 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is what I did years ago. I am a photographer and I started on a Mac. Used Gimp for 2 or three versions till I switched to Linux. So when Apple cut support for PowerPC (that is how long ago it was) the switch was pretty seamless. Would have loved something like Elementary back then though since it is very reminiscent of the "big cat" era of OS X.

      @@Socomhunter It is improving. It is just going to take time. It has improved leaps and bounds from a few years back. But it is the chicken or the egg paradox. Not enough people to invest in doing more. But people are not using because there isn't enough of what they need.

    • @Socomhunter
      @Socomhunter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dappermuis5002 it has improved but at the same time it hasn't. There has been some ways implemented to get games going but the user friendly part has absolutely not improved. The best thing they could come up with was distro's with some of the crap pre-installed. It's still a hassle to get certain things to work at all on linux and even that requires a lot of bullshit in the terminal. Normal users don't want to use the terminal. When is linux finally gonna learn that? As long as the majority of the stuff you want requires lines of code in a terminal it won't attract the intrest of a bigger population.

    I personally do not mind a reasonably priced piece of software. But I REFUSE... absolutely REFUSE to use a subscription model.
    That goes for games as well.. I REFUSE to rent my software. To me it is like buying a book but I have to pay again if I set it down for a couple months and decides to pick it up again later. Dumbest idea ever and you are a fool if you pay for such a thing.

    I would really like to see GIMP completely overhaul the text tool. Any effects you add to a text layer, or place text on a path, will take away editing. You have to make absolutely sure it is the typeface/font you want to use, is completely spelled correctly, etc., or you will have to go back and essentially start over on your text. When even online editors can get that at least partially done, you have a HUGE problem to correct.

    I recently started using DaVinci Resolve and can confirm it is a VERY nice program. The video preview is butter smooth at full quality, no pre-rendering necessary, you can scrub through the video (even frame-by-frame if you want) (or backwards) ..WITH sound, and when you cut a section of video it automatically moves the remaining video over to the end of the previous clip, saving you precious time. The effects presets are damn nice too, you can apply a bunch of them and it won't slow the preview down at all, and it comes with some seriously sleek title presets. All-in-all a very recommendable program. I'm honestly surprised it's free

    Linux is always seen as the "cheap version" of operating systems. But it is more than that. Linux is OPEN. Everything about the OS is public, documented and editable and this makes Linux distro's potential infinite. Also unlike Microsoft or Apple their scope is not to make money, but users happy.
    With Linux you will never have to worry about a new OS, that yours won't be supported anymore and so you have to buy a new PC because it does not support TPM 2.0.

      Windows and MacOs is about the user and their apps, you don't need to tinker with the OS to get your work done, and your apps won't suddenly break and stop working when the OS gets patched. Linux focuses on the OS, Mac and Windows focuses on the user and that's why they are the most popular desktops.

      It’s pretty much getting corporate takeovered right now. Some company bought it and the literal first thing they did was implement telemetry and then removed it and added a privacy policy which I could be wrong but is against the rules of the license the software is licensed under. Their are some forks out right now that you could use as a version before they implemented the telemetry but who knows how long those would work.

    With LibreOffice, you can edit and create PDF. That is good.
    The paid version of Davinci is US$299, and includes free lifetime upgrades.
    Blender is an awesome program, though its onboard video editor is subpar. I would use it only for testing. Tends to be a little crash-happy, so always save. If you are doing animation with it, render it one-frame-at-a-time as to avoid hassles when it crashes.
    People either love or hate GIMP, with little in-between. There used to be add-ons available that would improve the drawing characteristics of it, and you used to be able to do animations in it. (nothing complex, more GIF like than anything).

    7:25 be careful with Audacity, the owners recently changed the privacy policy to allow them to collect any and all data they can. Run an old version or the new one in a Firejail until there is a viable fork.

      @@skywz By the way, what is a "fork?"

    • @skywz
      @skywz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bobwolf1811 It's a piece of software that is based on another piece of software. Tenacity is "forked off" of Audacity, meaning it takes Audacity's code and makes changes to it. Other examples of forks include Windows being forked off of DOS, LibreOffice being a fork of OpenOffice, and Android being derived from Linux.

      Vmware workstation is also free as they screwed up that fact in thr video. It has a free version that average users would be fine with. It's type 2, but I find many novices starting out may like it's UI the most and it makes it pretty easy with modes like Unity and great documentation.

    What is an alternative for PDF editing software?

    • @dappermuis5002
      @dappermuis5002 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you just want to join and spit pages, I use PDF Arranger. It was the one feature Adobe didn't allow you to have for free that one needed, from time to time, but used once in a blue moon, so not worth paying for.
      I love NAPS2, not another pdf scanner, but the 2 draw backs, was 1stly, it could only join PDF's it scanned in (PDF arranger doesn't have that issue, but doesn't scan). The other is it doesn't work on linux, even if it claims to do so, unless you use something like Wine I guess, as the files for the linux download are the same EXE. files for windows. Sadly had to give up that one. As I don't use Windows as my daily driver. If they got that to work on Linux without having to jump through hoops, it would make scanning so much easier in Linux. It is a darn good tool.
      Also found that sometime you may need more than one program to do the same thing that was done by one. But is that a bad thing? If it does the job, so does it matter?
      As someone from a 3rd world country, when your currancy hovers between 15 -20 times the USD on average. It becomes so expensive, that just one of adobe's products, it could cost almost the same price as an entry level laptop, by the time the end of the year comes! Er.... I can't even afford to buy a new laptop every year!

    • @WolvenSpectre
      @WolvenSpectre 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just about every alternative. Foxit... Xoho... Sumatra... I don't know if Cute PDF is still around. Heck some browsers just have a light PDF reader built in IIRC. Oh and most word processors do to (or at least they used to, haven't done PDFs like that for the better part of a decade).

    • @RogerioPereiradaSilva77
      @RogerioPereiradaSilva77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acrobat Reader kinda lost its reason for existing a long time ago ever since web browsers became able to render PDF files themselves directly. And even before that, there were plenty of better - as in lightweight - alternatives to Adobe's bloated piece of shit such as FoxIt Reader and others. Linux desktop environments have had their own built-in PDF viewers for years. I think Acrobat Reader may have better support for some obscure features of the PDF specification, maybe better supports for PDF forms but that's about it which is overkill for nearly 99% of PDF users.
