Beautiful commentary. I first read the book as a summer school student in Cambridge in 1976, and caught the movie a few years later. I love how true the film is to the book. I am not much of a film aficionado, but the book and film had a great deal to do with my ongoing interest in Victorian and Edwardian England. Years ago I had a vinyl LP of the soundtrack (the other side had the soundtrack of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"). And, yes, Marian is a monster.

one of the alltime great films.....mysterious and oddly erotic.

"Interesting literary conception"...don't know if I buy that particularly. I too had trouble with the notion that one incident from your early life would ruin you for all the years to come. To me the book's strength is in its tone, its perfect capture of being 12 in the era in which it is set; it indeed (almost) has me believing in its premise by the end.

Marion a monster? Hardly. She was a victim of the mores of the age. She took some dubious actions but only because she was so trapped and constrained. When she rounded on Leo for ingratitude in refusing to be the messenger any longer, it was her frustration that was talking.

But she still took advantage of an innocent child in furtherance of her own ends.

@tonydalcon We're used to thinking that years of abuse or trauma produce psychological damage, but yet, one event could do it. Leo was on the threshold of discovering sex, still naive, romantically in love with Marian, and then-under cruel circumstances, suddenly sees sex in its animalistic coupling, followed rapidly by Ted's death. That would severely affect a sensitive young lad.

Very atmospheric film showing the claustraphic era that was Edwardian England. Great performances from all the main actors, especially Bates, Christie and Guard. The recent TV version was not a good, the boy seemed too young for the part.

Then Vanessa Redgrave played the older Marian in the new version. All very meta.

Disagree, I think Attonement was a far more interesting film. Well acted, less grating use of score.
