A dimension is a mathematical term, it's just a vector space. It means there is a place where information can exist. Add another term to your vector, that's another dimension. People get confused by scifi movies, time is not a dimension like space, at all, in the slightest. Time is a dimension because the state of the universe changes. Without time, the universe would be the same. Thats why there was no time before the big bang and there will be no time after the heat death of the universe, because the state of the universe was homogenous. There were no particles interacting to mark time. It's almost like, "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did it happen?" If there is no event that marks the passing of time, does it exist? Time is the changes in the states of the universe due to causality. One state causing a change to another state. That's all it is. When time slows down as you speed up, or near a gravity well, there's no warping of a time field or anything like that. Time slows down because space changes such that the rate of causality in that space changes. It has nothing to do with time, time is just the measurement of the state changes of the universe. When physicists talk about time travel, in any realistic sense, that from experimentation, they're talking about at the quantum level, not the whole universe. This is the difference between local entropy and the entropy of the universe. The only reason life can exist, is because entropy isn't absolute at a local level. At a local level, energy can be added into a system from the outside to decrease entropy. It's why it's extremely unlikely all the air in the room doesn't randomly end up in the corner and you suffocate to death. But add a little energy to a vacuum pump, and you could suffocate. Entropy at the universal level is infallible. It can't go another way, at least so long as the universe is expanding.
