Todd is my all time favorite artist. It bums me out when people hear this song and think that’s what he’s all about. His musical career is so danged eclectic. He is a master songwriter. Not to mention one of the most respected producers in the music business. Your next song should be Black and White.

This was the first song the teenage Rundgren ever wrote. Originally recorded it with his group, Nazz (from the Philly area). This hit version was recorded for his solo album "Something/Anything." One of the backing singers on the track was Vicki Sue Robinson, who had the huge disco hit, "Turn The Beat Around."

Todd…genius. This is a VERY deep and diverse rabbit hole should you choose to go deeper. He covered a lot of ground musically be it in his solo career or with Utopia. So many suggestions but what i wouldvsay is his live album Back to the Bars is a great document of his solo career through 1978. I would recommend ‘a dream goes on forever’, ‘don’t you ever learn’, ‘the verb ‘to love’ and ‘sometimes i dont’t know what to feel’ from that one…oh…..and ‘hawking’ from the ‘nearly human’ album

I saw him last night Laughlin, NV (7/6/24) and he was fantastic....super band as well...he playrd for two and a half hours....first time to see him, and I was blown away....fantastic voice still at 76 years old...bouncing all over the stage singing, playing guitar! Bass player (five string bass) and his drummer were kick ass too!

"Hello It's Me" was a top-five hit in the US in late 1973. Iconic early seventies -- the bridge -- "'Cause I never want to make you change for me" -- floats the melody around before finding the resolve. The seventies were a lot more mellow socially. Stories of heartache and unrequited love went down a lot more smoothly than they do today, apparently...

"Hello It's Me" was the first song written by Todd Rundgren. Written in 1967 as a slow ballad about the breakup of a relationship, it was released in October 1968 as the B-side of his band Nazz's debut single "Open My Eyes", and included on the debut album Nazz (1968). Although released as a B-side, it was picked up in preference to the A-side by Boston radio station WMEX, where it rose to No. 1, and was subsequently picked up by other stations. It entered the Billboard chart in February 1969, peaking at number 71, and re-entered the charts the following January, this time peaking at number 66. In Canada, it ranked number 41 in March 1969, and number 58 in February 1970.

You reacted strongly to this song, and it was definitely thought-provoking to hear your interpretation! I might be wrong, but taken line by line, I've always heard this song as being about a relationship where *both people* are not treating each other well. A soulful song, with a beautiful melody, but sad and self-aware. "I take for granted that you're always there/ I take for granted that you just don't care/ Sometimes I can't help seeing all the way through."

Hey Biz Todd wrote this song after a girl he was dating in high school broke up with him because her father didn't want his daughter dating a guy wirh long hair. She obeyed her father and ended their relationship. This is the second version of the song that was on his double solo album called Something Anything. The original version was slower in tempo and appeared on the album The Nazz which was Todds first band.

People are so close-minded. What's wrong with an open relationship? It would essentially eliminate homicides, assaults and jealousies in marriages that restrict a couple's freedom. He's right. The way things are, people really aren't free once they're in a relationship. But they could be in a freer society.

I'm learning from watching these reactions to songs from the 70's that it was very different back then when it came to relationships. There's a group from the 70's, Dr. Hook, they got a beautiful and romantic song about the one-night stands, "Sharing the Night Together". So don't read too much into the lyrics, just chill and enjoy the vibe.

My understanding is he wrote it a year after breaking up with a girl who he had been with in high school but, as mentioned before, her parents forbid her from seeing because of his long hair. I remember that being a thing in the early 70s. I think this song perfectly captures the confusion of an 18-year-old in a relationship. The painful dichotomy of the lyrics paired with his voice and building production are 😘

Todd is one of my favorites. You are hearing his first hit (I believe). This album (Something/Anything) was his most pop album. Todd music got more 'FM'after this album and then later even less circulated. I love even his later stuff. Todd finally got into the Rock Hall of Fame but it took too long. Still waiting for Jethro Tull and Guess Who to get into the hall of fame.

I hear at alot of chicago influence in there
Chicago did a song called beginnings which has this same pattern at the end... that repeative loop
    Rundgren uses a jazz element
    Chicago uses carribean melodies
You should listen to that one.
Im going to listen that now.
Rundgren is just an animal in the music industry
He only had a few radio hits but he has priduced many bands
    The tubes
    Hall and oats
    Meatloaf
    And the list goes on.
    He can do it all.❤

It is important to remember that a song isn't necessarily telling the listener that what is happening in the song is a good way to live one's life. A song isn't necessarily dispensing advice, it may just be examining some aspect of human nature. Often a song is exploring a particular lifestyle because it is interesting, or thought-provoking, or controversial. Art explores all of life's intricate tapestry, not just the parts that are safe, or sensible, or morally acceptable to the average person. Besides, what is right for one person isn't necessarily what is right for another. We are all very different.

i don't think he meant he wanted her to be free in the sense of playing around. this came out during the women's liberation movement,so he was saying he respected her as an individual,to be free to do what she wanted as far as having a career, and making her own choices. before women's lib the role of a woman was expected to be the doting housewife, and have the man's pipe and slippers ready when he came home from work with supper on the table. if anything this was a song about supporting a woman and treating her as an equal, not a possession. thus the lyric "and spend the the night if you think i should". her life, her decision.

Your rant makes me laugh. I guess that is one interpretation. But there is a different story behind these lyrics. Apparently Todd had a girlfriend in his teen years and they were very close until her dad saw the two of them walking home from school together one day and said "hell no!" you are not going out with that guy. So she dumped him. Just stopped talking to him and their relationship/friendship ended. They never spoke again. The song is represents what Todd thought would have been a better way to break it off with him. He felt that she should have ended it differently. Years later she contacted him through his agent) to ask for tickets to his concert. He sent her a couple but they never spoke. There were a lot of dad's like that back in the day. It was the time of the Vietnam war and any guy with hair down to his shoulders was off limits for their daughters. I love this song and remember listening to it when I was a kid. It always made me feel like I was floating on a cloud. Things were so different back then.

    Todd Rundgren is a talent.
I think Todd was talking about Liv Tyler the daughter of Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, whom Todd helped to raise partly with her mother.
She later found out Steve was her father.
