I've been a Dan Fan since 1975 when I was 12 and this is their best album IMO. All their albums are great but Aja is my number 1. As for genre, it's Steely Dan. They were considered jazz-rock fusion is the closest to a genre.
Steve Gadd. You would not believe how many of your favorite songs, he was the drummer on. 50 Ways to leave your lover, was one of his biggest iconic parts. That really captures his syle. He is not a hard hitter style, just like Aja, he can but it's his perfectly played quiet but close mic'd parts that just make a beautiful pocket and groove. Sometimes less is more.

Yes, that's the Legend Steve Gadd. I've been fortunate to have seen the brilliant Steve Gadd play live many times. Not with Steely Dan though. He's been touring with James Taylor for a long time, and I've been many James taylor concerts. (He tours a lot). Keith Carlock is the drummer who tours with Steely Dan. He's very good.
It is rock music ..Rock incorporates all styles of music R&B , Soul , Blues, Jazz , Folk ,Country , Doo Wop which intern morphed into punk ,metal, grunge ,Emo ,Rap, Hip Hop .
Virtually every cut from every Dan/Fagen/Becker album contains at least one killer solo or instrumental jam. Remember Forrest Gump and the box of chocolates? -- "You never know what you're gonna get..." Well, with Steely Dan, you gotta add, "...but I'll lay you 10-to-1 you're gonna love it!" Smooth, sweet grooves in every different flavor, wrapped around a sublime jam filling...you found the whole damb candy store!

Walter, and long-time SD stalwarts Denny Dias and Larry Carlton on guitars, Michael Omartian on piano, Joe Sample electric piano, Victor Feldman, percussion and vibes(vibraphone), Chuck Rainey, bass, Wayne Shorter, sax, ex-Eagle Timothy B. Schmidt, backing vocals, Donald of course, vocal, plus synthesizer and police whistle. Just had to, y'know? 🖖🏼😉🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊 P.s. in 1982-83 I was in the studio 'til I ran out of money and the drummer I'd hired settled on what he termed a 'Steve Gadd samba' for one of my tunes. Many originally underestimated this album. I thought it was their best, with tracks like this, and it does hold up the best. I know others disagree. That's O.K.
Well, if you just have to put it in a box, I would call this a combo of Jazz and RnB. There's some rock elements too, but mostly, I get a Jazz Fusion/RnB vibe from it. Oh, and that would be Steve Gadd killing it on drums, and the mighty Wayne Shorter on sax. They had a little trouble talking Wayne into doing this gig. He was afraid they were going to try and tell him what to play, and that's just not his bag. He finally agreed to do it. When he came into the studio, they asked him if he wanted to hear the whole track and he said, just play the part you want me to play over. They did, he went out in the studio and nailed that shit, and went home. lololol. And no, they don't go into a breakdown randomly, it's well thought out, as is everything they do. They did say on the documentary about the making of this album, which you should watch, you would really enjoy it, that this track came together quicker than all the others. Even though it's the most challenging track on the album. They credited it to the high level of musicians they had on the gig and their excellent level of preparedness. As for Steve's drum parts on this, all the guys in the studio were blown away by it as well. lol.
The whole Aja album is probably right up your alley, many consider Aja Steely Dan's pinnacle album - gotta check out Deacon Blues, Josie, Home At Last (Bernard Purdy on the drums is phenomenal on this track - the Purdy Shuffle) . My personal favorite album is The Royal Scam which is more Rock and Guitar influenced (Kid Charlemagne, Don't Take Me Alive, Caves of Altamira, Sign In Stranger, The Fez, Hattian Divorce, Green Earrings, Every Thing You Did, The Royal Scam) . Also Check out Babylon Sister, Hey Nineteen and FM - all fall in your taste range. Enjoy the rabbit hole you've fallen in - it's a nice one!

You know Fagen expected him to be a metronome and he pretty much was, but this sounds almost adlibbed but I know it’s super precise.
