आह को चाहिए इक उम्र असर होने तक,
कौन जीता है तेरी ज़ुल्फ़ के सर होने तक.
दामे-हर मौज में है हल्का-ए-सदकामे-निहंग,
देखें क्या गुज़रे है क़तरे पे गुहर होने तक.
आशिक़ी सब्र तलब और तमन्ना बेताब,
दिल का क्या रंग करुं ख़ूने-जिगर होने तक.
हमने माना कि तग़ाफ़ुल न करोगे, लेकिन,
ख़ाक हो जाएंगे हम, तुमको ख़बर होने तक.
परतवे-ख़ूर से है शबनम को फ़ना की तालीम,
मैं भी हूं एक इनायत की नज़र होने तक.
इक नज़र बेश नहीं फ़र्सते हस्ती ग़ालिब,
गर्मि-ए-बज़्म है इक रक़्से-शरर होने तक.
ग़मे-हस्ती का "असद" किससे हो जुज़ मर्ग, इलाज,
शम्मा हर रंग में जलती है सहर होने तक.

My mother told me...this was my father's fav ghazal amidst the time when he was suffering from cancer way back in 91. Sadly he is no more with us..I play this even till date as part of his memory...

Shamma har rang mein jalti hai sahar hone Tak( it is like metaphor which means- maut aane Tak hame jeena hi padega har rang mein chahe sukh ho ya dukh)

Second stanza in better interppretted like this : like candle (shama) burns ie remains in pain and suffering all night (ie life) and pain end ends at sahar (morning) when candles dies, stops burning being extinguished.

Jagjit Singh saab's voice and command over the song is unmatched and impeccable. After his passing an era of ghazals has ended. Pankaj Udhasji is the next sole torch bearer left in the world of ghazals.
Santoor starting at 4.50 goes deep into my soul and takes all the pain and suffering out of me. I can't explain and it is amazing how barely a musical instrument could do such a thing. Not sure if someone else feels the same?

One of my favourite ghazal, written by the legendary Urdu poet "Mirza Ghalib", the evergreen urdu lyricist. Very meaningful, melodious and heart touching ghazal, but only those people can understand, who knows Urdu language, since the word - "tagaful" means nazarandaaz or ignore, "shamma" means aag or fire, "seher" means subah or morning.
I don't know why such artists leave so early.. we miss you Jagjit ji 😔

When both synchronize with each other,then it becomes a great and immortal creativity. This rendition is the best example . This Gazal has profound effect & influence on people journey of life,.My father sang this Gazal holding me in his lap ,in his own style, at the time barely 6 year old I had no clue as to its meaning, but almost 3 or 4 decades later when I quoted first couplet of this Gazal Aah ko Chahiyee to my Professor of politics uncle he smiled & admired the maturity & passion for humanity I have attained.
