Kelly is so transparent with her voice. She has had ups and downs and they are always extremely related to her personal life. The Duets era in 2012 was much superior to the 2016-2019 era, where her belts were weak and she developed her head voice further. Duets was around when her previous relationship was going well and she was happy. Now she's back better than ever and her upper belts are stronger than ever, after the divorce. It's crazy how she kept incredible for two decades, but it's even crazier how she's still improving after all this time. She is unstoppable.
The way she was constantly mixing those high ass belts during Duets was insane. I remember watching it when I was like 12-13 and loving her on there but I didn’t really discover her and her music until Piece by Piece
It’s hard for any vocalist to compete with 2011-2013 Kelly-her placement was just perfect. 2023 Kelly is truly coming through though. Her earlier days were always a hit or miss with technique and even pitch. Also, the G#5s in ‘Miss Independent’ are actually A5s! Albeit a pretty flat A5 for the 2000s example.
