Kingdom Come Deliverance became of my favorite games of all time, It feels like a true RPG. It also helped me realize I was a huge medieval nerd.

Dude ngl, playing through Watch Dogs 2 made me feel like I have actually visited San Francisco.. it's INSANE how realistic they made it feel & how unique every inch of the map is. The NPCs are so diverse with the way they dress, look & act and it isn't just a complete mashup of people, it all just makes sense and fits together so perfectly. I have such fond memories of that game & the world definitely had a lot to do with it!

This is why I just love open world games. The level of design and immersion based on how much you can interact with the world is so much fun to explore. I hope open world RPGs never go out of style.

L.A. Noire is absolutely incredible when it comes to setting the tone and mood that the player is set in. Each case is unique and all have there "big" moments and I love that a lot in L.A. Noire.

When I played GTA 4 a few years ago, the car chase through the time square area felt really insane to me for some reason, even though there are so many far more over the top moments. Because GTA 4 world is so convincing and immersive, it just made me think about how crazy something like that would be in real life.
I like the driving physics in gta 4, it's really fun. I still go back to that game

The fighting combat was fun, i would always start a fight and use alot of the martial art finishers lol.
I loved the world of AC: Origins... Especially when, like me, most would expect Egypt to be just a vast open desert world but surprisingly there are a lot of lush and fertile landscapes to explore... And of course the people living there had some quite interesting stories too...

The painstaking historical accuracy of the setting blew me away, You can even see where the Roman influences took hold.

The only problem with Origins is that you never saw any of the fantastic cranes in the game being used!
LA Noire is another one that could be mentioned. Technically not an open-world game, but quite detailed for its time.

I am ecstatic that you guys added Kingdom Come Deliverance in this line-up. Truly one of my favorite RPG experiences. The game really makes you feel like you started off as a blacksmiths son and ended up as a hero of medieval times. Or a villain of medieval times. The perk system is very satisfying, with perks that are just so unique and compliment the player so well.
The perks, just like everything in this game, feel like the developers put a lot of time and thought into it. They're not just 2% more damage, like many other games.

@@Grapefruit5000 yeah exactly. Pretty much none of the perks are based on percentages and such. All the combat perks you get open up combos
I wish there was a easy mode of some kind, I wasn't even able to lockpick without losing 100 picks in the process on ps4. As a elder scroll/fallout veteran it was a quiting point for me that the lockpicking was 10 times tougher than these games, plus I died a 100 tuimes trying to quit the first village.
@@tommylee9123 I understand. In a way there is an easy mode, but it's a lot of work. If you look up a video on how to become OP early, it teaches you a couple tricks that helps you before you leave the tutorial mission. And that's the route that I took. And you aren't cheating or glitching the game, you are simply exploiting what's in the tutorial mission that most players overlook. Hope that helps!
Watch Dogs 2 is such a good and fun game. Especially with friends just goofing off. I have SO many memories with that game, it makes me sad that I don't hear about it more often

The Watchdogs franchise as a whole kinda died off with Legion's underwhelming reception but I genuinely enjoyed the first 2 games. Wd2 was fantastic and one of the most fun platinums I ever got
@@Patricswift I thin that was because Legion was not character centric. You had a collective of people you collected... but really, that is nothing like the first two games where you have a central character. I loved WD2, and really liked 1... but never finished Legion. It just could not grab me.

Watch dogs 2 is my favorite open world map ever, there's so much detail everywhere you go, I love slowly walking through the pedestrian areas banging some tunes

The Middle Earth games have some of the most lively game worlds I've ever seen tbh. The Nemesis System sets up this dynamic world that's constantly moving and evolving whether or not the player is involved with it. Even your standard grunt had a daily schedule to abide by. It's crazy how overlooked those games are.

Watchdogs 2 was what I wanted more of in 3... The gameplay felt unusually smooth and interaction with the NPCs felt natural.

Played most of the games on this list, some of them multiple times, and to this day Watch Dogs 2 had the absolute best open world I've ever experienced. It was the first and only time I genuinely felt like I was in living, breathing city in a video game.
The only think i wish there was more of, was an apartment, I want to buy more than a car

I think that Boston from AC 3 is one of the best build cities of the franchise. Walking around on the streets was truly immersive

Kingdom Come is such an amazing piece of art. They have real life locations, whether it be buildings, landscape terrain, and the sounds even of the wet ground, the rain. I feel like I intimately know the Bohemian countryside
Mafia Definitive Edition is an amazing game. Story-wise, visuals, the actors, everything is just incredible.

They did a good job with the remake but having had played the original on PC when it was released i prefer it, the voice acting of the characters i prefer & while some of it is janky it has an inate charm to it. Love the music from the original, too. It's was such a great game for the time & it still holds up today.

Loved the SF in Watch Dogs 2... grew up in SF and felt so nostalgic during lockdown and I legit spent hours just walking/driving around WD2 and could recognize a lot of key landmarks.

Nothing now matches the feeling of being in your early 20s and playing GTA 4. I always loved catching a cab to my next mission and smoking a bowl while listening to the jazz station as the cabbie drove me through the rainy streets of LC talking shit to other drivers. A true masterpiece
Fr, brought me back to Gta III
One of the first things I did in GTAIV was get on the subway/train and rode it around the entire loop to see the whole city. It was mind-blowing at the time.
Kingdom Come is the only game I've ever played that includes a society system so deeply integrated that I was stopped by a guard who yelled at me for walking at night without a torch. Something along the lines of "What are you doing skulking around out here in shadow?!" People will judge based on how you look but also literally every other thing about you it's mental to think deeply on.
Is the game really detailed like that? I might have to play it cause I wanna get immersed into a game until Starfield drops.
@DaTrillion So you only play as specifically one guy with one story but how you go about it is up to you. You can't read when you start the game but further in you meet someone who teaches you how and after that each book you find when you read it you gain more understanding of words. Combat is different as in you have to swing and block by using mouse or thumbstick to control your hands at different angles momentum and weight counts as well counter to your opponents multiple people are really hard to fight at first. Bows have no cross hair but doing all these things you get better which means you unlock the crosshair when aiming or Sword play becoming easier it's all relative. A very detailed game in it's combat and world you can also do crimes to be evil but obviously how you act will determine how people look at you do enough bad people will know and fear you or outright ban you from their place.
I own the game, but I stopped midway because of how broken the combat system is. Otherwise, the open world is crazy detailed.
@@sugreev2001 once you know how to fight it won't be broken anymore, instead you will be breaking bones. Of course if you are using mace
I think Bully deservers an honorable mention here. It`s the first game i`ve ever played where the NPCs are recognizable people and you know them all by name. Also, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series had an amazing credible world too.

Yeah, Bully really managed to make you feel like you were just a student in a city where a lot of none school related stuff was going on.

Far Cry 3 (by a _very_ large margin) has the best 'lived-in" feel of any of the games in that entire franchise. Far Cry 5 and 6 were seriously bad by comparison (still fun to play, though).
Just because you cram a game with more stuff doesn't mean it's more authentic. I mean, even the metacritic scores for FC5 & 6 were 10 to 15 points lower than FC3's, which is a _massive_ drop-off in overall quality. Even Far Cry 2 was better than *all* the Far Cry games that came after FC3. It felt more realistic, authentic, and lived-in. Just shy of FC3, though.
And yes, I've beaten them all. Most of them more than once.

I really loved how in the first watch dogs you can just hop on a train and drive around in real time, instead of the screen fading to black. Such train systems for some reason always elevate a game world for me
In the first watch dogs trains would insta stop when u are in front of them… immersion… yeahhhh

@@therealgangnamstyle That is called cherry picking.U saw videos of crowbcat cherry picking some details here and there and saying the game is bad.But when you play ur self you realize how good the game is and how clickbaity crowbcat is sometimes.Even though some of his other videos are correct but not all of his videos are genuine.
Bully also had a dope lived in world, especially for it's time. Seeing kids you had class with going about their day, or teachers when not in class.
Loved that KCD got included in the list. Outward is another game with brilliant open world mechanism. The fantasy magic RPG open world is truly worth its price.
I really enjoyed outward but i think the world design is very bland
I miss picking up a random trash cup in GTA4 and throwing it at someone while they're walking down the stairs from a subway. Watching the Euphoria engine do its thing as that person got hit by the cup like it was a boulder and then the tumble down the stairs is just all kinds of fun.
When I played GTA4 I was hoping when 5 came out it would have the physics of 4 with the customization of SA, but guess not.

I think the first two Bioshock games really give a feeling of a world once lived-in. Rapture gave such an eerie feeling.
I ESPECAILY loved the parts where your walking 'outdoors' in those glas tubes and can see the parts of rapture you will never reach but want too hehe.
Or the dlc where you’re walking around in a living Rapture. Amazing.

I'm honestly suprised Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands wasn't on the list? The open world is massive with so many things to do! Gosh if I could go back for the 1st time. Far Cry 5 was also AMAZING!!

So good to see AC Odyssey's Greece getting some love... I played lots of open world games all these years, and this one is surely one of the most impressive beautiful! To this day I still see myself returning there.
I'm so gratified by the attention to Mafia: DE and Watch_Dogs 2. I Don't think people really appreciate what went into those worlds!
I haven't tried Cyberpunk since launch, but I wasn't expecting that one on this list
Cybperpunk’s world is one I could get lost in for hours just exploring
the AI may be silly and stupid but the city itself is literally so far the best in gaming for now, i have played many open worlds including GTA and Watch Dogs, but nothing come close to Night City, it also has the benefit of having freedom of being a pure fictional city rather than 'based off'
I mean I haven't it at all yet because I was waiting to upgrade GPU, but just from what I've seen it's an obvious choice
My only issue with Watch Dogs 2 is the lack of needles and shit on the sidewalks. The other issue is no drug addicts going full Ultimate Warrior rants.
There's barely anything to do in Mafia DE ... what a waste of a finely crafted world.

It's going back a *long* time now, but for me - my first experience of an in-game world that was just 'OMGosh' was the 1980s Bards Tale games.
BT1 on the Amstrad CPC, wondering around Skara Brae and just feeling jaw droppingly amazed that they could fit an entire city and dungeons in 64K of RAM ...
Heck, if I downloaded the disk image of that game, the size of the desktop icon representing it, would be bigger than the game itself!
Plus, the total freakout I used to get when you got smoke in your eyes in a dungeon and was totally lost!
Great concept though guys, thank you for jogging some old memories!
I also made myself a ghetto arcade cabinet to play in it with good immersion!
There was a business office just down the road and they'd thrown out one of those old 80s style executive wheely chair which was fine but for a little bit of rough and worn out patches of leather.
I made a frame out of Bamboo canes that my Mother used to use in the garden, set the computer up and even had one of my Dad's old stereo amplifiers and decent speakers (JBL Control 1's). Finally over the top I had an old blackout curtain that just made you feel like you were in a tiny little cinema ... it felt amazing for my 10 year old brain!
Only problem was if the chair had too much spin, it'd rip the bamboo supports out!
I was never much of a racing gamer, but I do recall that Chase HQ and Pole Position were good. Elite looked awesome in the dark too, but I couldn't ever figure that game out 😄
Memories like this is why I ended up buying into VR.

Glad you mentioned KCD. It has to be one of my favorite games of all time. As a medieval history buff, that game really scratched a specific itch of mine and I can't wait to see what Warhorse Studios does with it in the future.

@@haidarnaufaldy1889 there's really nothing like it. Im a huge fan of any open world RPG and in terms of just doing anything you want and the immersion of the game nothing else comes close. The combat is really fun once you get it down and Henry is such a likable guy. Im praying they make a sequel. I've played through Deliverance and the DLCs about 3 times now.

@@mohammadashikurrahman7530 For me, Watch Dogs 2 is my favourite. Not for the plot or anything but because there's so much fun to be had in the world. WD1 is okay but fell flat in too many areas for me. The idea behind it needed developing more, which is what WD2 gave us. Legion has a great London map but like you say, the story and acting are terrible. The character tech had potential but it wasn't ready for public use IMO, and as most of the game focused on it it dragged the game down further.

@@abellewis3062 okay, cool. It's one of the best rated games in the series, and the Fandom loved it. The open world jrpg nature is a wonderful evolution of yakuza, and I cannot wait for the future iterations in the style. Creators already confirmed moving forward they will be jrpgs.
Nobody wants to talk about how good and detailed LA Noir was.. Even tho it's kinda old it still holds up with these next gen graphics with the realistic face expressions and more. Hands down one of the best open world games and definitely should of been on this list.
I was in a rough time but being from New York and actually completing gta 4 to the 100 percent was so satisfying. Almost like you indulge in extra parts of the world if you go trophy hunting which is one of the things I love about trophies if the game has an in-depth world
Division 1 in the snow feels real. The radio playing at the bases built, slowly watching the base fill with people as you build things up , finding tapes telling what happened to different people, bodies pulled up from the virus.

Watchdogs 2 was such a charming goofy beautifully detailed open world. I love that game even still.
I appreciate the mentioning of Kingdom Come Deliverance.
While it is not the most polished game, it still manages to be one of the most immersive experiences I've had in gaming.
This can be considered a niche thing but it actually makes the game so so much more enjoyable when a world feels lived in.
And any scale works! From the small littered alleyways of Stray to the worlds of Grand Theft Auto and even those (slightly cursed looking) simulator games cities.
Bolivia from Ghost Recon: Wild Lands feels like a lived in open world.
I just thoroughly enjoyed traveling through the world of KCD whether it be on horseback or by foot there were so many encounters and the ambushes and just going out of your way to poach.
The video I was hoping from you guys throughout my entire life. A world which is not about putting things together but more like a cozy, filled place that feels like a world you belong to. it's like a hometown; not the biggest but you can explore every bit of it as kids, interact with it, feels like you belong to it and can make you feel heat in a cold place, under a blanket, with yellow lights on when you think about it as your home. Another world that made me feel that way was the Mad Max game

AC Odyssey is one of my favorite games ever, one of the main reasons being I'm a huge sucker for Ancient Greece mythology and culture. Going over the hillside and seeing the massive sprawl of the next city would always excite me, they really did feel lived-in, seeing everyone going about their commerce and daily routines. Say what you want about Ubisoft but they went the extra mile on Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla when it came to respecting the time periods and cultures.
Yep and it's deeply disappointing that they get a huge amount of hate just because "they're bad AC games" when they're great games on their own
Been enjoying Odyssey recently just to try and satisfy my unscratchable Elder Scrolls itch. It's pretty incredible just taking the time and exploring instead of fast traveling everywhere. I wish ES games could be so massive and the combat as smooth.
Watch dogs 2 was an amazing game. Some of the gun sounds were questionable, but the overall city was incredible. Enjoyed the story too!

Not a whole game but Diamond City from fallout 4 legit seemed like a real post apocalyptic city with a mayor, plastic surgery, a bar it all seemed so real

also Goodneighbor that city with the memory den. That felt like you where walking threw a post apoc night city..which is actualy what it was supose to be in consept apprently. It was supose to be the seceond hub city after Dimond city which was also supose to be really really big. Goodneighbor was supose to have more gangs more storys and the memory den was supose to play a massive part in the story. Where you would have to deal with Memory junkies. People who are addicted to the memory den in the same way. Brain Dance addicts in Cyberpunk are. Apprently you where supose to use the memory den to peice together your own memorys which would affect the ending. With the MC we got in the final game only being one potential back story.

I'd argue the New York City in Marvel's Spider-Man nails the New York feel even better than GTA 4. I'm from about 30 miles from NYC, so like Jake, I'm a local and that game blew me away with how it felt like home.

i liked the driving mechanics on gta4 there was something fun about driving even though it was sometimes annoying for racing missions because the cars had so much body roll but other than that if you're just driving form A to B it was cool and relaxing
Yeah, that driving was really relaxing. I would like to see these physics to be in GTA 6 or even GTA 5 (without mods of course)
Cyberpunk was really good for feel on things like industrial areas and how they work in the cities, the hills with the old drive-ins, the gas stations and road houses out of the cities, and even just walking in the less neon areas just legit feels like walking in downtown Vancouver.
I think one gameworld that really steps out for me is Elder Scrolls Oblivion. Every character seems to have a place to go and a routine to follow. The guards, eat and sleep and patrol the city. The citizens run their own businesses, shop or take walks around each city. The game has aged don't get me wrong, but the interactions you have with each cities residents are truly special. Even down to how it connects with side and main quests.
Skyrim is very similar but I think Oblivion is truly what fits with truly lived in game worlds

Thank you for including Kingdom come deliverance! I loved that game i played through it twice and enjoyed every moment in that world. I really hope they make a sequal but it's been a long time with no real talk of it.

Probably the same games, just bigger and with better graphics. There is no indication that open world games will revolutionize, since we havent seen anything better than RD2 in 2018.
@@thomasnielsen5580 I dont think it will change that much in the future. Open world games are no longer limited by technology, but by budget and amount of time used.
Think about games 10 years ago vs now, the difference is so huge they're literally remaking 10 year old games, then try to imagine now to 10 years in the future... scary stuff lol

Just Cause 3 definitely deserves a mention. Every town/village/military base/other infrastructure you go to, there's a lot happening, whether before or after you (Rico Rodriguez) liberate it from Di Ravello's forces. So much to do, such a huge world to explore - an excellent game IMHO. JC3 is surely worthy of a place in this type of list (maybe in a part 3?)
Mafia DE is excellent. IMHO all 3 games have a nice, immersive feel to them. Ditto for the WatchDogs series.
I have said it before and I will say it again, Stalker, especially Anomaly with the Gamma modpack. That game is just awesome, and it have random events happening all the time, that requires no player input. Most of the time, when you walk through the zone, you hear distant gunfights or a man screaming as he's eaten by dogs or a monster, you can choose to intervene and that has effects depending on who you help. There's active wars between the factions and they can start and end with the player doing nothing, resulting in factions changing allegiances to someone they have just been at war with, bc another faction now threatens both factions or is in some other way beneficial, or they can just end up neutral with each other.

Absolutely! Besides the clear “mechanics” upgrade GTA5 had, everything else about it was a huge step back! And the characters in all three stories were completely well written and unforgettable! Don’t get me wrong I like GTA5 but just not even close to as much as 4!

We are some of the few people who loved gta 4 because it felt more real, I feel like they way downgraded the mechanics of the the game for gta 5 people just want to be able to go full throttle on rails driving in my opinion. I’m also a fan of racing simulators so the “harder” driving mechanics of gta 4 was a blast and the damage physics were better too.

I don’t know if you can count that as an open world but thief really did a good job giving life to the city, the whole point of it is that we’re in it during night under a curfew and yet we still manage to get some perks at peoples lives like listening to them behind doors, sometimes stumbling on them in the streets or just mainly robbing shops that really make you feel like there is a market dedicated to day time
I’m so glad by the approach that Jake has taken to Cyberpunk. A game whose strength is not really in traditional core gameplay loops like shooting and crafting, but in ambience creation, attention to detail at a micro level, and artistic depth. When I saw Johnny playing guitar on a sofa in a hidden room in the game, and playing the notes and chords right, I was hooked. When other game reviewers were busy boarding the hate train, Jake focused on the positives, which are really really strong. Never change Jake. You and Gameranx are the most trusted names in video game reviews for a reason.

Sniper ghost warrior 3 is worth mentioning the npc ai is pretty op and the towns, cities and vehicles definitely have a lived in feel. I also like the fact that they use things like the repair kits and muzzle breaks. Still a really good game to this day
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING WATCHDOGS 2 LOVE!!!! I borrowed that from a friend a few years ago and loved it. Music, clothes, gameplay, missions, npcs, story, etc. It had everything. San Francisco was beautiful. Loved the selfie/camera side missions too. Cyberpunk is amazing as well. I get lost in photo mode of just the cityscapes. Fallout 4 was my first platinum game. This vid makes me want to go back and finish nukaworld's soda achievements.
I'm surprised the new Hitman Trilogy wasn't mentioned. The NPC activity is so diverse and the conversions that take place reveal so much from lore to things that took place in previous missions. Also, the interactive worlds that look and feel like real places they are based on

I think weirdly enough. Jak and daxter 2 and 3 had really good lived in areas for the time
Honestly stalker deserves some credit, it wasn't in the first list and it's not here either, but it's hailed for it's ai and the ability of npcs to move around the map and seem like they are actually doing things, not to mention the engaging and nerve wrecking fire fights, it really feels like a world filled with other players on a multiplayer roleplaying server
I have to give it to Watch Dogs 2. The world, at least, feels exceptional. Its fun to go around, even on foot and observe the program's shennanigans. :)
This list is highly questionable... in many ways. I doesn't include any of the games with the most well realized (lived-in) worlds. I can think of 5 right off the top of my head that feel far more lived-in than any of these.

I finally got to playing Watch Dogs 2 last fall after the disappointment that was the first one for me and boy it's one of the most fun I've had in an open world game. Hacking random people's bank accounts and watching their reactions or calling the cops/gangs on them is such a blast!
Edit: speaking of NPC unpredictability I remember walking down the street and some chick was pummeling her boyfriends car with a baseball bat and saying crazy female stuff! It was absolutely hysterical! 😂
Yeah, the NPCs do a lot of interesting and random stuff in Watch Dogs 2, it's incredible how detailed that game is.
Wasteland 3 was incredible and really felt like everything you did would change something. And the music made it even more incredible

I second this. Furthermore, I believe there were only 1st/3rd person games mentioned so far. Some of the old/new CRPGs deserve a spot... and they are numerous.
The division 1 is more than worth mentioning. Snowy New York looks phenomenal in that game.
In Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 it’s not open world but they do a great job storytelling using the environment. Wall writings from people reacting to the infection, messy abandoned houses and apartments. Really gives you a sense of the mass panic that came with the green flu. It’s so good
Deus ex mankind divided - some of the best small city designs, especially at night. Felt so unique and real. F@@@ing beautiful at times.
100%, small densely packed and crafted areas are amazing. For me they surpass large open world games that just feel empty despite trying (RDR2, Cyberpunk etc)

Kingdom Come Deliverance is one of the best RPG’s I’ve ever played. Everything the player does needs to be earned and the world is so detailed and beautiful. The NPC’s are interesting as well, getting on with their day to day tasks. Amazing game.
What I loved about Gta4 when it came out was it was the first one to do the whole Doppler effect with npc vehicles, where if their windows were down you could hear the music get louder and then quieter as the drove past
Kingdomcome deliverance what a game really underrated I would say combat can be quite difficult in the beginning but it's so satisfying learning and growing the character all the mechanics make it one of the most realistic games I've ever played can't wait for the next game
