I think maybe 4 or 5
Over the course of the whole series, I think I remember 21. There were at least 3 sets, of at least 5 assistants each. Plus a fourth set of 4 or 5 for the "entombed in ice" episode (which had a different masked magician) my favourite among them was the delicious Lauren Melendez.

Your post is inaccurate, his 'cover' was not in the least bit 'blown' as a matter of fact, he himself revealed who he was in the final episode. then, having done so, went on to explain why he'd made these shows and what he hoped they'd achieved.
