I have a black austrolorp named Mildred. She is 7 1/2 years old and the queen of my coop. She had a birth defect. Her toes are badly curled, but she has never let that hold her back. At 4 she went broody for the first and only time in her life. We got her some fertile eggs, and she successfully hatched and raised them. She was amazing as a mother hen.

I just found your channel today and love it!! Im a homeschool mom of 6 and we acquired a homestead last spring. We've had small homesteads before but nothing as big as what we have now. Our chickens (45) turn 18 weeks tomorrow and I'm just checking to make sure providing all they need and found your chicken videos. We have nine black australorps, five gold buff orpingtons, four silver laced wyandotte, five gold laced, four or five delaware's, and the rest are Rhode Island reds. After this video I'm thinking that next year I will get a few more australorps.

Australorp derives from the words “Australia” and “Orpington,” and it is the Orpington in them that gives them their docile nature. If the Buff Orpington is the Golden Retriever of the chicken world, then the Black Australorp is the Black Lab. What I mean by this is they’re often overlooked in favor of the other breed, but those who do get them adore them! Plus, Australorps generally lay more than Orpingtons, but if you get both they will live happily together, so you get the best of both worlds😁!

@@BeckysHomestead Exactly! Australorps are also better foragers than Orpingtons on average, but both happily forage around for food.

I've been planning and studying my whole life for this moment in time. I'm not what you would call a prepper per say (typo but I'll leave it for context, because f that guy) but I'm very prepared. What Miss Becky is teaching us is truly more valuable than ever "today". I will finally be realizing my own dream of simply living off the land. I'm so excited to start this journey to self sufficiency. Some would say I'm late to the party, I'd say I'm right on time. I really appreciate your honest approach, very few will discuss things like finance. That's what drew me to you. So thanks again and have an amazing day.

You start where you are with what you've got. It took me 8 years to get where I am now. I sold my suburban home where I had a 1000 sq ft garden and four illegal chickens, and moved to a larger property last year with 3500 sq ft of garden space and more chickens. I'm now 69 years old. Sometimes I get in my own way, but at least I have more sustainability where I am now. Becky was very instrumental in my decision to buy a larger property, and I've learned a great deal from her, and continue to. Learn and hone every skill you can and enjoy the journey!

Homesteading has always been the best life style, you can develop useful skills and the work is very satisfying.
I find if funny how now that things are changing, people are “rushing” into Homesteading and “prepping”.
Homestead skills take a long time to develop and short cuts never pay off. Start by building or getting a little house. Then add the animals and gardens slowly with a lot of thought and planning. Don’t build a dump stead. ☀️❤️☀️

Feed them a little meat every day and they will lay. All chickens lay good the first two years. Chickens eat bugs, worms, toads, little nice, little snakes. People will say “but I let them free range” unless your yard is damp woods with leaves. They don’t get enough meat free ranging, you have to feed them a little meat

Good morning Becky. Thanks for this interesting video on a great breed of chickens. I have a couple of questions. First, though, Sweetie is a testament to the great care and love you have for your animals. So, is 10 to 12 years a good average for how long most chickens can live? And about what age does a chicken stop laying? Is it something their bodies do the rest of their lives, or does production stop at some time? Does Sweetie still lay eggs? Thanks. I've been watching you for years and you have taught me so much about the natural care of animals. Yours are so healthy, your doing everything right. Have a great day!

Haha Thunder our pony is 30 or 31 years old and in perfect health😁
I would say chickens live 8 to 14 years with good care which includes proper feeding. Hens are like women they are born with way more eggs than they will ever use. I say they stop laying from 7 to 10 years old, again with good care.☀️❤️☀️

They are the easiest of keepers & great composters too.
I was actually getting too many eggs so I was taking older hens that were not laying to help with composting for my organic garden. I was really into chickens I spend lots of time with them gardening. Then I was in a bad car accident and I've had to downsize.

You gave a very good description of them, Becky, and a sensible, realistic understanding of a homestead. It is raising your own meat but I would have a hard time killing my pets to eat them. I hope lab grown meat comes along fast. I detest killing any animal. They are much nicer than people.

Homesteading is about food certainly, but it is also about economic sustainability. We had to lay out an enormous sum to get the place up and running, and yes we eat our stock, but I have no interest in raising animals that can't cover the expense of raising them, and the more crossover per animal/crop the better. The chickens are maybe the hardest working employees I have ever employed, you get eggs, meat, you can sell either of those, plus you can sell chicks, fertilized eggs, point of lay hens or cockerels to cover feed, coop construction etc. In addition, they provide some of the best fertilizer on earth, and with a bit of planning and management you can have them do a fair bit of your weeding and compost turning. It probably took me 3-5 years to truly turn a profit on chickens, but it's an asset rather than an expense anymore.

I don’t dislike them. But, I’ve never really had great luck with them. As far as beauty goes, yes. Eggs and meat, yes. Friendly. Not really. Their not mean. They just prefer to be alone. The don’t like to be picked up. Our other breeds are friendly. Overall, I don’t mind them. Just not a favorite. We’re gonna try some brahmas. How much do you know about brahmas. Are they kid friendly. And, also barred rock hens????? Thank you… love the channel…

The black chickens confuse the crows here in FL and I have yet to lose a single bird to one. Bobcats on the other hand, are unbelievably bad and I've lost at least 27 to them. Get rid of one, two more show up to replace them. Guess I need a guardian dog.

You’ve got some great videos, I am on the look out for a rooster to go with my 21 week old Cornish cross hens..
I had 2 remaining Cornish cross roosters but they needed to go because they caused wounds on them…I was going to keep one and hadn’t decided yet…so I had to process the 2….
Australorp sounds like a fantastic choice…..are the roosters wonderful with hens and people too please?
Is it ok to get them as mature chickens as well as younger ones like say 12 weeks old?

For the folks that want a breed that is a gentle giant and don't need that many eggs and would love chickens that are like puppies with feathers....THE STANDARD COCHIN. No kidding folks!!!! Not only that, they are great mama's and go broody. So for sustainability if your other egg layers don't go broody and you want to keep your meat production up, just put some eggs under the broody Cochin. I have a few chairs in my chicken yard. I sit down and they all come running...all 5 of them and sit on the arms of the chair and some on my lap. They follow you around like a puppy dog. They have the feathered feet. When I say feathered feet I mean THE WHOLE FOOT AND LEGS covered in beautiful feathers. I have the Barred Rock Cochins and they are beautiful. I already have a few people who want to buy eggs from me for hatching because anyone who see's them and their temerament wants them. They aren't the breed you want if you want a lot of eggs. So for the first timer, an excellent choice. The single person who doesn't need a dozen eggs per day....an excellent choice. The person that wants sustainable meat production and hatch out your own meat supply placing eggs under the broody Cochin...excellent choice. Good luck.

Hi Becky, thanks for the videos, they are all great. I have 1/2 acre, but limited space for a coop, If I got 4 Australorps, or 4 wyancottes, would a coop about 6 X 8 be large enough ? They would have plenty of grass room, and dirt area under the deck (12 X 18 feet). Your knowledge and experience would be greatly appreciated.

for my second coop for duel purpose birds I've decided buff orpingtons.
black Australorp & breese were my next choices after studying up.
    am I making a mistake?
I heard the buffs are great mothers and I want them to raise all my new chicks from now on (via fertilized eggs from hatchery's) to spare me the trouble.

I also learned that black chickens make hawks think that they are crows and stay away.
Hawks and crows apparently don't get along. Hawks stay away from crows. 😁
