Neither the trumpet or violin are my favorite instruments but I could listen to this band and guests all day and night, and thank god Frank has recovered from his accident and is playing as well as ever.

Hey, Russell, Ya know Mark used to play with Stephane. He played guitar and then some one told Stephane that Mark played violin. Stephane's eyes "Lit up", he said. The two started jamming together and Stephane started having twin fiddle sets in his shows.
That guitar player said" hey I can beat up this riff too" 😂 well done perfect music orgy!

Yes the Edge you speak of is right about 5:20. Some don't make it back from that one. Wynton the General gets them home safely altho battered. The man responsible for putting the entire company in mortal danger was shot at sunrise the next morning. Gen. Marsalis foreknowledge of the territory is what saved all their necks in the end as the beloved "Wynnie" drives his troops down those alternate back road hollers and home

You know, it's amazing that single note instruments (wind) can hold their own against chording instruments (string). Viva virtuosos.
If you "stop" these guys from playing music, they'll go crazy. It's in the blood and you can't stop blood from flowing. This sounds like "how" I can't and never will be able to play. Yea, I feel sorry for myself enjoying their music. [8.7.17]

Meanwhile, millions of Americans are being told what brilliant artists "One Direction" and Taylor Swift are. That's sadly comical - those kids are coloring with 3-4 crayons, at the most - and many great Jazz players toil in obscurity (not these guys, per se, but hopefully you get what I mean, here).
+pyannaguy In general, Americans are *not* being told that pop artists a brilliant. You would be better off saying that they *think* that those artists are brilliant. They came up with that on themselves. And most of the people that think that are under 20. Do you really expect more than a handful of teens and below to appreciate jazz? Especially if they haven't played it themselves? The reason why jazz players toil in obscurity is *not* because of the people who like the artists you mention. It's the adults that listen to "classic"rock, adult contemporary- or Yanni.
The fans of jazz like this are usually different people, and the "music" is defined differently. The music here is all instrumental. Pop artists are adored because of the words they sing. No one would pay attention to Taylor Swift or One Direction if all they played were instrumental music. The instrumentals may be "3-4 crayons" like you say, but they are only the vehicle to support the lyrics. Furthermore, if the lyrics were complex, they would fly over the heads of the people they are directed at. Don't teenagers and younger have a right to have their emotions stirred by music of some kind? They have an entire lifetime ahead of them to learn how to appreciate Coltrane and Beethoven.
I mean it as constructive criticism, not an insult, that I think that complaining about how stupid people who like pop are on pages that are jazz, classical,etc. is also wrongheaded. As an illustration: I listen to this piece, Mozart, Monk, bluegrass..... and I also listen to Taylor Swift. I actually *do* think she's a genius at what she does, even if the instrumental backings are simple. Her lyrics are the point, and thy uplift the kids that her music is aimed at. One Direction, on the other hand, is different. They're offering little more than emotional masturbation. That is true of a lot of popular music, but not all of it, in my opinion.
I play as much jazz at work for my 20-something colleagues as I can. Sometimes they get it. Sometimes they don't. They play contemporary pop for me. Most of the time I don't get it, but I'm willing to check it out.

hey, i love mark, & it aint a competition, he's all but as good as grappelli, i listened to bireli, & he's a genius,but can he vamp like that? also listen to joscho stephan, absolutely crazy gtr. something totally diff, try bela fleck, & if you like sax,plas johnson (pink panther) he best tenor of all, try georgia, please give me somebody to love, etc etc. all the best,i love em all & they'e all diff. (thank god) ever heard eva cassidy do san fransisco blues? by the way i play sax but loveitall.

Why do jazz and traditional musicians have fewer intonation problems than classic musicians?
This makes me regret once more that I chose to play clarinet when i was a kid, and not one of these instruments. If I had, I might still be playing music today.
