Speaking of smaller craftsmen, my son and I stopped by Sidnaw in Grand Rapids Michigan last weekend. Coolest old time shop and owners putting their blood and sweat into top quality clothes. We walked out with a couple canvas work shirts, a flannel and a wool work shirt with copper snaps. Couldn't be happier.

Just a quick note. Wanted to say I am eating a little crow lol. I slammed those Cordoba boots when you first introduced them. I am not a fan of the original color lol. Thankfully your wife didn't like them either lol. But admittedly, they "weathered " to a much nicer color..tone. I would think, seeing them now, that rubbing in some really good conditioning oil. Would darken them more and...I admit I would like them then. But I admit up front that pale color..nope not a fan. But hats off to you for showing them. 👏 BTW, your idea on the Anarak jacket is spot on. Those are great for the outdoors naturally. But if you enjoy camping.. what ever.. they are great. To have the combination of a boot and jacket.. really sharp 👌

Great CWC 👏 Filson was clowning with that jacket! I went with the green Surveyor, but opted for the black cordura Pullman design from last year. Keep the content coming 👍

Junya Watanabe is basically Rei Kawakubo’s right hand man. She started CdG which is a huge fashion house out of Japan. He later started his own label under his own name. His style leans towards avant-garde and will add a avante-garde spin on normal everyday workwear items. He does a lot of collabs with big names like Levi’s and Carhartt (WIP, not mainline). In the case of the Filson he probably wanted it be shinier and drape differently than actual denim which is achieved by the poly. I wouldn’t really consider this a Filson travesty because it doesn’t fall in their wheelhouse of workwear but rather a fashion designer using Filson’s silhouette to make it different enough where it will turn heads but still keep the timeless look.

I agree with you on the collaboration stuff. most of my purchases are pretty utilitarian, I don't bother buying something that my other products can do decently well. the only apparel collaboration that I've actually purchased were the JimGreen barefoot rangers since they filled a niche that just wasn't really there (only other option were the bearfoot bruins.) Those are my favourite kinds of collaborations; something distinct and useful.

Sugar Cane makes some amazing stuff, I prefer the shirt cut of their flannels to most other of the Japanese brands in the same space. Superb designs and colours, I love the brand. They don't get the buzz of some of the other brands but they are pioneers that keep their vision and quality over the years.

"Since its creation in 1929, Cordura fabric’s utilization extends into various applications. It’s a synthetic (or sometimes a synthetic and cotton based blend) fabric that is strong and durable. It’s interesting history and unique qualities make it a high caliber fabric for a multitude of projects. Since Cordura is a synthetic material, it’s built to last. It has high tensile strength fibers and will withstand long term wear. It’s highly abrasive and in most cases extremely water repellent.
This means Cordura and Cordura-like fabrics are amazing for so many things. Limitless amounts of products and applications benefit from Cordura fabric. Not only will it work for you, it’ll work wherever you need to use it.
Cordura fabric is additionally flame repellent. Per the regulations of the National Fire Protection Agency’s 701 guidelines to fabric flame retardancy guide, cordura style fabrics are inherently flame retardant. This makes Cordura and Cordura-like fabrics great for events requiring compliant fabrics.
Certainly, cordura comes in various fabric weights and styles depending on certain applications and projects. Heavier weighted Cordura-like fabric is great for industrial applications. Lightweight Cordura style fabric’s versatility works well for all sorts of personal and professional uses." www.canvasetc.com/explanation-cordura-fabric/

Wasn’t Junya Watanabe the protege of Senya Watanabe? Jokes aside, the Carhartt jacket looks like a step in the right direction and that Thursday boot looks fantastic but I think what stole the show, and maybe stripped my wallet of a few bills, was the Kasuri indigo work shirt, that thing looks great. Great episode, as always, thanks Carl!

Cordura sometimes has a polyurethane coating on the inside which will over time suffer from hydrolysis. This will smell really really bad, like cat vomit. It takes years for it to happen but it’s worth noting.

Westco model not something directly available on their website (and they might not have immediate stock of what they list). Iron Heart doesn’t seem to market it as a “collab” or brag about their influence. It’s $90 more, shipping is free and Iron Heart will get it from the UK to your door stateside in 2 days. I haven’t found a company that matches IH’s customer service. Best of success w/ your Thursday collaboration. 🙂

Carl you hit the nail right smack on the head. It is street wear like Carhartt WIP. To bad Filson has now gone down that route. I love love my mackinaw cruiser it was an investment and an heirloom piece that hopefully someone will appreciate when I'm gone, other then that Filson has slowly started to become irrelevant to me. Their prices have soured and tell you the truth I don't think their items are constructed like they used to be. So many other good brands out there. Most you show to us and some you don't, there are plenty though.

Filson has gone the wrong way. When I was told about them by a friend living in Seattle in '94, I immediately called(!!!!) and requested a catalog(!!!!!). Since that innocent time, I have bought many pieces of clothing from them. My favorite and the only one I still like is the waxed short Cruiser. Their shift to normal everyday clothing and clothing for pets signalled the beginning of the decline. Too bad. I bought into their little mystique. It was a cool brand while it lasted. RIP.
PS: I bought that and love that new Detroit jacket with the drop tail. I love it. But it is not my work jacket. It is my casual go to.
PSS: Where's the ugly last item? I miss it.

I too lament the Filson slow walk, first to mediocrity and now to designer-led inferiority. I think of Abercrombie, Eddie Bauer, even Timberland. I wonder how many remember that Abercrombie & Fitch was a superb workwear/outdoor outfitter. On its old school bread and butter---tin cloth, wool Mackinaw, twill luggage that sort of thing---Filson has now priced itself for those who take their Rover to the Mall (and never any further). How easily we forget who we are because profit and "growth" makes the decisions.

Filson is lost boys, time to move onto better brands (for less money sometimes). Just got some summer sweat shorts from Devium, another great 100% American made brand. Great colorways, and amazingly comfortable. When I get home the Iron Hearts come off and those shorts go on.

Filson is a shadow of what they used to be. Overpriced, poor QC, poorly thought-out designs, overseas garbage marketed under a legacy American brand name. The only way I would buy Filson these days is used vintage.
