  • Episode 4 - Trains in India are AMAZING and you don't need to ride first class to enjoy the journey. Watch us travel the luggage wagon to Jodhpur and then hop the train to Jaisalmer.
    'Train Hopping' is when you jump on a cart that has no seats and essentially you just hang on and see where it goes! It's dangerous and not something we encourage.
    An action packed episodes full of train hopping, zip lining, camel riding, beers, curries for days, as well as plenty more to enjoy and discuss about after.... but for now....sit back and relax.
    We hope you enjoy this documentary series and our travels in India. Don't forget to Subscribe and share this series with your travel buddies if you do.

      Getting a train ticket in India is hard as hell. Seven months traveling and I only managed to buy a train ticket once but I traveled more than once by train. 😬 So no judgment from me. We never tried the luggage car though but just because we didn’t come up with the idea tbh. We usually would pick any car, hop on and wait for someone to charge us. So we always paid on board. Did the camel safari too and my camel spent all rides, everyday trying to throw me down 🤣🤣... he would walk close to any tree as tall as I was to bump me down and he would refuse to fully sit down so I could climb down... so I had to jump off of it. I never saw them getting hurt... but I sure was haha. So we are even I guess.

    Its nice to think about ethical aspect of the Camel domestication. But camels have been domesticated for centuries in Rajasthan and are very much a part of the culture there. Can't really comment on the nose ring aspect but World's largest camel trading festival happens in Pushkar, Rajasthan where they are bought and sold for which they have to be in really great condition and so they are treated and raised up well. Ofcourse that cannot be the case for every camel owner but generally they are taken care of adequately. But I respect people's POV on this issue and honestly its refreshing to see you guys having such strong principles on this issue. Great vlog.👍🏻

      "It has been happening for centuries" is not a proper justification. The question should be is it right or wrong rather than has it been practiced for how long or how many people are doing it. Practices like slavery, sati, human/animal sacrifices (to an extend) were abandoned purely based on that regard. But I honestly don't see this thing with camels in Rajasthan or elephants in Kerala coming to an end anytime soon because majority of people think like the way you presented it. And with this huge population still rising, placing reason above public attitude is far from happening. PS : Lina is my new spirit animal for some time :D

      Valid point Jerry. The historical context is important to understand the phenomenon but irrelevant to validate or justify it. While there's a long way to go, I believe discussions around animal cruelty will take us in the eventual direction of eliminating it. As the world gets advanced enough and wealthy enough to be able to comfortably feed and clothe its poor, reliance on beasts of burden (to help make ends meet) will keep waning. It has already been happening for decades.

    • @anesthesia166
      @anesthesia166 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just because it's legal does not make it ethical. Slavery was still legal before 1807. No animal should be used for human entertainment. This is what's ethical.

    Really enjoyed the show so far! Loved seasons 1 and 2 and this already looks like another great season 😊. I can only imagine how difficult making that choice would have had to be. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and you've travelled so far to do it. I can totally understand why the others still chose to do the tour- to be honest, I'm not sure what I'd do in that situation either. At the same time, I just wanted to say how much I respect Lina for making the choice that she did. It isn't easy to be the person who says no, especially when you're in a group and don't want to negatively affect other people's experience. What she did was not easy, especially when she knows it will be shown on a vlog and keyboard warriors might be mean to her about it, so it was really great to see. She deserves a big round of applause for standing up for what she believes in and I hope other people are inspired to do the same.

    Amazing! India had not been at the top of my list but this episode moved it up. So awesome! I understand the divide on the ethical treatment, when I went to Chiang Mai I decided to find an Elephant Sanctuary that did not ride the elephants since I found out there backs are not suited for it. I also wanted to see them in their natural environment. HOWEVER the next day I could not pass up the chance to be with the tigers. Your heart splits but as you said, overall, it’s a decision you make personally and with the animals overall treatment in mind.

    What a beautiful episode guys.. the series is shaping up really well.. 20 more mins and I would have to get an HBO subscription to be able to watch it 😂😂
    Epic sights.. Be it Mehrangar Fort, the old walls of the blue city or the rawness of Jaisalmer.. all beautifully showcased without being overly touristic.
    Fantastic music selection at 9.17, 14.50 and 20.55
    Train rides are really making me nostalgic, having travelled a lot in India by train and in local compartments over the last 3-4yrs.. the country does really come alive, and really brings out the journey element of one's travels, which is not possible flying or on a bus. Especially liked the sunrise from the train and absolutely loved the luggage compartment! Epic Budgeteering!!
    About the whole ethical animal debate, I am not really one for debates, but since you took both stances and encouraged viewers to take a respectful stance and voice their opinions, I would have to say I agree with Paddy/Thijs viewpoint for the following reasons:
    1) If you deny the owners their livelihood, the people as well as the camels will die. That is the stark reality of these remote businesses in India or similar places in the world.
    2) Coming from a vegetarian upbringing and having been one all my life, I am unable to comprehend how one animal as big as a cow or deer can be killed and eaten, and yet another like a camel has a checklist of rights. If all humans deserve similar rights, maybe so do all animals and fishes. I will never aim to understand how a dog or a horse is a pet and yet a pig or cow is slaughtered, causing which is now well documented as one of the largest polluting, unhygienic and unsustainable industry in the world.. which Paddy briefly mentioned.
    Having said that, the important thing is choice. And respecting choice, which I do. We are all different as you guys rightly pointed out, so we learn to co-exist, and thrive despite our differences. That is what makes us unique. Beautifully and sensitively presented subject though.. kudos to the Budgeteers on the overall evolution.. Next level guys!
    Last but not the least, special shout-out to all the helpful people you met in this episode.. especially the crew looking after you guys in the desert (including Lina who helped with the brekkie😂)
    Oh, and apologies for the long 'comment' (maybe I will do a video comment from next time). Onwards and upwards, all aboard the budget train!! Can't wait for the Himalayas!!

    Enjoyed the channel since episode 1 of 1. The cloth hobbles are not harmful - especially how loosely they tied them. They allowed them the ability to move, unlike hobbles that are used on horses daily in the world that keep them in one spot. So, the camel hobbles are a non-issue.
    Additionally, complaints were made regarding the nose-peg. This is a form of control that has been used on camels, oxen and cattle for (literally) thousands of years to lead and control an animal that is hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds heavier and hundreds of times stronger. You can see to this today in Southeast Asia, small children riding and leading Water Buffalo that would normally be beyond their ability. The nose peg or ring is not a source of constant pain or discomfort. The pain or discomfort only occurs when hard, constant pressure is put on the device. Ask Lina, she wears one.
    Before anyone complains further about control devices like pegs or rings, consider the type of bit used on the next horse you ride. My family raised horses (up to 60 at a time) for years, I have ridden since I was a small child (I am in my 50's now); some of the most cruel devices in constant use with animals that no one ever mentions are wire snaffle, split-ring wire snaffles and spade bits! There are some worse, but less common.
    IF an animal is trained well and correctly, violence is not necessary (I know this from experience working with wild horses, dogs and cats). There is no need for harshness or cruelty but the occasional swat or bite may be if warranted to remind them who's in control.
    Finally, Before any more protestation against pegs and rings, check the mouth corners, teeth, hooves, frogs, and backs of the horses you are about to ride as well as bits used before your next outing to make sure they are in good health and well-treated.

    Love this season and the part of Paddy singing Cold Desert, one of my favorite KOL songs! And the camel riding? That's a difficult one: it's not like hugging tigers and riding elephants in Thailand, but I don't know if it's exactly like riding horses nowadays.. Maybe like riding horses thousands of years ago?

      Best of vines life is not just about logic and argument. It’s about the suffering you know you help to create which you can avoid but decide to be picky about it according to your convenience. I don’t care what you eat. It’s your choice. I’ve seen enough people like you. They’re fairly common.

    • @iamJuxen
      @iamJuxen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not fair I think for everyone to keep commenting this point, he already mentioned in the video that he eats meat and acknowledges this point, but in my opinion, when we see things happening in person, we have a greater reaction to things, just because you eat meat doesn't mean you can't be offended by an animal being mistreated, eating meat there's a disconnect, but if a meat eater saw an animal being slaughtered in person the would have a greater reaction. We are humans, it's okay to feel empathetic towards a certain situation, regardless of if you eat meat or not.

      Jodi.. you may have noticed that not all the camels had their legs tied(ex- 29:10). This is because this camel is more domesticated while the other one(whose leg was tied) was probably younger/less domesticated. Far more cruelty is done to Chicken/Lambs/Cows etc in industrial meat/poultry farming.. than by these handlers to their only source of income.

I respect your discussion about animal ethics. It was thought-provoking without being preachy or ethnocentric. I know I'm late to the party because I just now started binge watching the whole season but maximum respect and lots of love to Lina for her decision to not go on the camel ride!!!
    And thanks to Paddy for pointing out the reality about the way most of us treat animals in our daily life at 29:25 - but one wrong thing doesn't justify another wrong thing.
    Also thanks to all of you Budgeteers for showing everything the way you went about (not) doing the whole camel ride thing instead of just editing it in a way that would have made us believe that you either did the ride together or that you didn't do it all.
    And about the argument that "unless you are 100% vegan you can not criticize the way animals are treated outside of the food industry"
    ...the world is not all black and white. Any conscious or unconscious decision to eat a meal that does not involve the death of another sentient being helps and any time someone decides not to take part in any kind of exploitation of animals helps as well ... live and let live!
    LOVE, PEACE AND VEGGIE GREASE ! ! !

    Another great episode, guys! Loved that you hitched the train, nice work!!! Didn't look to bad either compared the the train in a previous episode. It's great that Lina stuck to her guns and didn't support the bad treatment of the camels. We suppose you could compare it to riding elephants in Thailand... Looking forward to the next episode, might end up watching that one from our tent up in the mountains of Georgia 😀😀 Thanks for sharing as always!

      Yes u r right.
      Myself belong to village and lives in Delhi.
      And in village we do have nose rings to he buffalo's just to control them because they are powerful and sometimes out of control. So it doesn't mean that we mistreat them & even love them as our family.
      So people please don't make illusions let's come to a village & check out.

    This was a strange episode, but it might be my favorite. It wasn't action packed or have any crazy drone shots, but it was very real. I think Lina was right to stick to what she believed, even thought it was probably a pain in the ass for her to leave the group for the day.
    Anyway, how did you get onto the back of the train for a free ride? They don't check that area?

    I don't understand this animal thing, You ride horses, you eat meat, kill al sort of animals for your food, but feel sad about seeing camels and elephant rides? Isn't that hypocrisy? Selectively caring for some animals while killing all others for your food.

    • @TheBudgeteers
      @TheBudgeteers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      who says i ride horses and eat meat?

    • @pradeepchoudhary1627
      @pradeepchoudhary1627 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In the Video? But that's not limited up to you, there are many, many westerners I've seen in their Indian travel videos who eat meat and complain about elephants rides. How is it any different than riding a horse? They wanna ban this elephant riding thing, and it will come to camels as well. While at the same time, having no problem with horses being ridden. and the reason they give is the elephant is a wild animal. So what? Indians have been riding and using elephants and camels much like Horses for thousands of years, in warfare, in procession and all sort of other things, they aren't gonna just give it up because Westerns don't like it. This hypocrisy is similar to complaining and hating Chinese for eating dogs, just cause in the west dogs are your pets. While totally okay with eating other animals, who they don't make their pets. I'm talking in general here, not pointing to any particular individual. And don't get offenede now. Great Video.
