Black swan still kicks my heart in the ass. It’s about the “first death” when a performer can no longer dance or make music and no longer have the passion for performing. That part of you does and the first death is more painful than actual death.

Some notes about Dope: that song actually has a lot of social commentary. In RM's verse where he talks about "given up on 3? Given up on 5? How about giving up on 6?" He's referring to how Koreans referred to millennials as the generation that gave up on things like dating, marrying, raising children, owning a home, employment, and even the will to live. He criticizes how the older generation labels them as lazy and having no will, when in fact millennials are struggling because the economic and social conditions they live in are completely different from their predecessors. Countless hours of studying don't guarantee admission into college and hard work doesn't guarantee a job. Thus, "Dope" is a work anthem that celebrates all the effort that youth put in with lyrics like "I reject rejection." Their outfits represent different careers because they are representing their generation.

No you're wrong about what name RM is saying when you saying giving up on three or giving up on six he means the K-pop industry giving up on members that they picked the B in different boy bands so I don't know where you got your commentary from about that but it is definitely wrong you're obviously not a BTS Army why do people have to make things into a 3-hour novel on here wanted a simple thing and it's about giving up on members that were already in the band SMH

@@jackiestow4294 I have no idea where you got that from... because it is not true.
Look up "n-po generation".... the 7th thing to give up on is hope.
Not to mention that that is far more meaningfull. And why "give up" on BTS? The label always had their back as had Army. The rest never was interested in them in the first place. So what you said makes no sense at all?

Black swan is probably one of their deepest songs. Its related to a quote by Martha Graham, “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” So their basically fearing losing their love for art or in this case music and say that would be their first death. The shadow at the end represents them embracing their darkest fears.

for black swan, its actually presentating artists' fear of losing passion for what they love to do or create (in bts case, their passion for music), they feel like losing passion for what they love is a painful death.

Idol is such a fun song!! The whole song and the MV are basically a response to haters who claimed BTS became too “westernized”. Or at international haters who see K-pop as a silly, weird genre. Hence the crazy MV, because as amazing as Gangnam Style was for K-pop it also brought along certain stereotypes for international people that had never seen K-pop before.
Without going too deep into the Korean references (because they are literally everywhere in the MV) we can easily see that they used hanboks, the traditional clothing from Korea, a giwajips which is the yellow architecture where they dance in, and the little jump in the choreography is a dance step called 자반뒤집기 used in the traditional dance pungimul. They also reference some Korean myths like the rabbit living in the moon, and even the music incorporated Korean traditional instruments and in the chorus the boys sing “ursoo” and “jihwaja” which are both sounds Korean make in traditional music. And this is just stretching the surface.
But basically they’re trying to say that no they’re not “westernized” as a lot of K-pop/Korean fans claimed, and no they’re not the “silly K-pop” that the international fans label them to be. They’re Korean and they do K-pop (hence totally embracing the stereotypes that K-pop is crazy and silly) and they’re proud of that.
An additional note is that they actually started incorporating concepts from Carl Jung in this song’s lyric (which they now do very often). Because they’re talking about having different versions of themselves, different personas, relating that to how they’re not just what people want them to be, they’re not simple, and they’re not limited to the many labels people put on them. In fact, they’re a little bit of everything, and they are multifaceted. They are escencially presenting themselves not as only artists but also people.

Black swan is one of my all time favorite songs for sure! The lyricism, the meaning behind it, the music video, Jimins contemporary dancing... I could go on and on. There is an art film and an orchestral version as well which I absolutely love! When it comes to the meaning, it's basically saying that losing their passion for music would be like a "first death" to them. There is a quote by Martha Graham saying: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." They included it in the art film. I hope what I just wrote makes sense since I am not a native speaker, anyone can feel free to correct me or add more information! 😅

Glad you can feel their authentic personas through just these song. Trust me these songs haven't even scratched the surface of how raw their lyrics get especially on their b sides and rap heavy songs. The more personal lyrics get its harder to give a generalised message that the audience can relate to but bts does this well. Because the lyrics are so detailed and specific we end loving the members more. Literally the songs under the love yourself album series felt like a self help book. Highly recommend you go through them on your own time cause their discography is huge.

Black Swan was my intro to BTS. I loved it so much I went way down the rabbit hold. Now I love almost all of their songs, including the just rap ones (and I never used to care for rap). Black Swan has to do with when you lose the desire or ability to make music, dance, etc. that is considered the first death, which is said to be more painful than the final death. JK is my bias, and Jimin I guess a bias wrecker, but really I just love them all. J-Hope and Jimin are the "main" dancers, JK is a Lead dancer and in 2018 they added V to the formal dance line. That said, J-Hope, Jimin and Jungkook are called 3J and have a few of their own dance routines. For Idol, there is a ton of symbolism that is explained very well by DKDKTV (much of which would go over our heads as non-Koreans). You may want to watch that video too. Ballads...well, my favorite with just the vocal line is House of Cards or The Truth Untold or, well, they are all good. Also, J-Hope just released a solo album and has 2 MV's out. One is called "More" and the other is called "Arson".

Oh I was thinking the english subs on the Danger MV are a lot more aggressive than usual haha. So I looked into it and found that the 1theK version (which is the one that comes up if you search for Danger BTS - it's the one I'm used to) has a different translation to the HYBE labels version. I didn't realise HYBE went so hard for their translation lol. Well that was interesting and I learned something today.
The drawings in Idol - I think the boys were just asked to draw something random that was incorporated into the MV. Yoongi (Suga) drew a giant Shooky which is his cookie character from their BT21 merch. Don't look into it if you don't want to lose more cash lol.
J-hope and Jimin are considered the main dancers, while J-hope is also the dance leader. So he has additional responsibilities of running rehearsals, helping to teach choreo, cleaning and perfecting performances, etc. JK is also a great dancer. The three of them are known as 3J and have done special dance performances as a trio.

"Idol" is a clap back at people who were accusing them of being sell outs and forgetting their Korean roots. The video is full of traditional Korean elements in response. If you want to see "Idol" live, I suggest the MMA (or is it MAMA? I can never remember) 2018 performance. I also strongly recommend the 2019 performance for the same award show. Love love love it. "Black Swan" is my personal favorite, because as an author, I can relate to the fear that the muse will desert me. She's apparently on extended leave right now, but I hope she'll be back. Suffice it to say I'm afraid of that first death too.
BTW, if you're into symbolism and deep meanings, you've found the right group. And I really recommend the explanation videos by xCeleste and Bookish Theories. Some videos, like "Spring Day," really need the explanations. ("Spring Day" explanation by Italian Army is the best for that one.)
Yeah. Tons of content. You're doing a great job interpreting things and I'm glad you're enjoying the music. (You should also look up the Jimin Effect videos. )

In case you still had questions about this, they are dressed as various professions in Dope (i.e. JK police officer, Jin doctor etc.). I don't think they have any correlation to the members specifically, just that the song is about how they worked so so hard for their success and basically sacrificed their youth to work on their careers. And for Idol, there's literally so much symbolism in that video, it would be impossible for me to expand upon it here haha. In simplest terms, they are embracing who they are and their status as kpop idols/artists and all that entails, including the things many (many!) people on the internet criticize them for.

This video was so fun, you unintentionally chose some of their most hype songs except for Black Swan haha. Like you said all of them are like anthems, and they are soooo good live! In the future you could watch a “medley” performance of one of their Love Yourself or Speak Yourself concerts, they sing dope, fire, idol, etc. all together and they go crazy!.
Black Swan is one of our queens, the lyrics are so raw and deep because it shows their fear of one day loosing the passion they have for music with is basically their whole life, and how that would be like their first death maybe even more painful than their actual death. It was already heartbreaking and now is even more because of their announcement on BTS Festa week this year about them wanting and needing to take a break to figure out where are they going next and find themselves again because they have been feeling lost for a long time, this “brake” was supposed to be after the release of their Map Of The Soul album, which contains Black Swan as on of their main tracks, so this song was probably not all metaphorical, but actually how they felt back then🥺. Unfortunately, they had to postpone that break due to the pandemic and because they are angels who thought they couldn't leave ARMY without them in the current situation, so they tried to give us positive energy with Dynamite, Permission to Dance and Butter, they just didn't imagine everything that would come after, all the awards, presentations, interviews, grammy nominations, etc. , so the break was postponed until now after releasing their anthology album “Proof” celebrating their 9th anniversary. Meanwhile they are concentrating on solo projects starting with J-hope as you mentioned in the last video, you were right, I'd love to see your reaction to the boys' new solo projects in the future.
Thank you for the reaction 💜, really excited for everything is coming next ✨.

I love how thoughtful and attentive you are with your comments! You have a really kind, comforting vibe and your interpretations are super interesting. I could write an essay on all these songs haha, but I’ll just say you’re right that they’re all super meaningful as well as fun, energetic dance songs. Idol especially has many layers - the music video is so overwhelming on purpose, because they’re responding to people criticising them for being too colourful/using green screen/being too western/being too korean/too much in general…. And they’re saying “okay, let’s put all the things you hate in a video full of colours and computer effects, with korean cultural references and childish outfits and see you absolutely love it because we’re amazing and you can’t stop me loving myself.” That’s basically the message I got from the video! And the lyrics obviously go even deeper into the self-love and self-acceptance part. We love BTS because of all their different sides and different parts of their identity, not in spite of it.
Please do watch all of these live at some point - I especially recommend the “BTS week” on Jimmy Fallon in late 2020, they performed Idol and Black Swan among other songs, and the performances are beautiful.
Super looking forward to the next few days and seeing you discover more about them!

The outfits represent careers... whatever you do, do it well, study hard, work hard to be successful - for BTS, while everyone else is out clubbing around they are up early, working hard, dance practicing to be successful. "I reject rejection". The practice dance video of FIre is something else to watch. DNA: It's Suga B21 pillow/cookie shape. They all have stuffed pillow figures. They are also showcasing their Korean heritage with clothes, images, tiger, etc.

Loved the reaction and you chose a nice selection of their backlog of songs, look forward to you discovering even more. With Black Swan I find it quite funny and ironic that a song that is ultimately about the groups burn-out is one of their most popular and loved songs both within/outside the fandom. Plus this song resonates so much more when you take into account their Festa VLive and the guys taking a break from the group.

I just found your channel and I loved your reaction !! 😁💜
I just want to answer/clarify/ give my thoughts on some things you said in the video:
-- About Dope: the outfits are suppose to represent different jobs and the message is basically " everyone can be dope, whatever your job or interest is, just work hard to achieve what you want"
-- About Idol: You are right ! there are many cultural references and symbolism in both the lyrics & MV. DKDKTV did an explanation video about it if you are interested, you can watch it 😊
-- About Black Swan: It is a track in the "Map of the soul : 7" Album which is the second album in the Map of the soul series, which is based on Carl Jung theories about the "self". The first album "Map of the soul: Persona" talks about the "persona" aspect of ourselves and the second talks about the "shadow" & "ego" parts. Black Swan belong to the "shadow" part which is the darkest side of our self.
I recommend watching the explanation by "Bookish theories" where she explains all this + the symbolism in the lyrics, & MV 😊
PS: I apologize for any mistakes, Eng isn't my first language 😅

Good reaction, ty. Love this song(Black Swan) and MV. Jimin and JK in corsets is chef's kiss. 😍This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” This one's is Jimin's wheelhouse and yet all the guys slayed the contemporary dancing. I was really impressed on 1st watch. Now with the band on a long break and working on solo albums we know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. Borahae! Hugs. ---NY USA 2019 Army 💜#YouAreEnough

Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence.
Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top.
    Shadow/mirror images - self reflection.
With BTS MVs we suggest watch 1st or read lyrics 1st. Than watch dance practice, a live, explained video is there is one behind the scenes. This is why we OT7 they all wreck us every other day. LMAO. snorts. Jimin ult bias, Suga wrecker & V, OT7. y fav song is Your Eyes Tell its a kdrama OST followed by Stay alive by JK producer Suga also OST.

Here via Anitra’s channel and I am so loving your BTS reactions Austin. I am a true OT7 BTS fan, 7 biases, 7 wreckers so I am here for it all lol. Honestly? A lot of BTS MV’s need background explanations because they’re so important/significant that the casual viewer just won’t see it. Idol is one of those songs.
Korean media as a whole have never really been kind to BTS (much of it STILL isn’t) & one of the things they were accused of was being Westernized. The Idol MV represents a part of that. It’s steeped in Korean culture, myth, tradition - you’re absolutely right, the visuals, graphics, are all very symbolic. BTS followed it up by performing this live at MMA with one of the most traditional Korean live performances you will EVER see. Arguably one of the best MMA performances in history. It basically floored their critics and an entire country.
When (& if) you react to Spring day - such an important song (it hasn’t left the Korean charts since it’s release) it’s another one that you’ll know means more, but you won’t understand it until you know the history. Until then, just react to what you want, enjoy BTS, their group & solo work and have the best fun! Pay any negativity no mind, just know that for every miserable twit, there are probably 10 positive ones, happy you’re reacting to BTS. ❤️💜

And I love Jungkook twerking in the background of IDOL😂 and the Pictures with the names doesn't mean it's them, it shows you who draw the picture. Suga drew his BT21 character Shooky. Hey Austin !
I'm so glad you're giving BTS a chance and having a whole BTS week ! I love how genuine and positive your reviews always are (positive as in you're never mean or disrespectful to any group even when you don't like smth) and you really brighten up my mood with your videos everytime !
For BTS, I don't know if you recorded it for your BTS week, but I really recommend reacting to the whole HYYH era ! with I Need You, the Prologue trailer (it's absolutely beautiful, you're gonna love it), Run and then the Wings teasers and Blood Sweat and Tears. Also the Young Forever album, I know for a fact that you're gonna love it !!!
I've known BTS since they debuted but I never took any interest in them before that era. I was like "i'll never like them, they're not my style" and yeah...i totally fell for them with that era and here i am 6 years later, a whole ARMY 😂
I'm sure you'll love it if you haven't already watched and reacted to all this ! 😊
I'm super excited to see what else you have planned for this week !

Just a little background about Idol - the visual, clothing, and dance style all have African roots. For example for the wardrobe (when they're in the suites) were done by an African designer. In the early days of Idol performances they mainly wore clothing that featured traditional African patterns or had African designers. They also incorporated South African Gwara-Gwara and Nigerian Shaku Shaku dance into the choreography as well. There's a whole article that goes into the African-Korean fusion that was seen throughout this entire video. In modern time they perform this song with a more traditional Korean sounding beat - where they showcase traditional Korean clothing, dances (MMA performance), and much more. Very cool song & message!

In BTS, the dance line is Jhope, Jimin and Jungkook. The members positions in the group changed over time as they tried to find their sound. For example when they initially debuted in 2013, there is a video of them where Jin introduces himself as the main vocalist and visual. Jimin debuted as main dancer and Jhope was promoted from lead to main dancer. Jungkook is lead dancer. What's really cool is they have their own dance style and bring their own flavor to the performance. Jhope and Jimin were actually dancers before joining BTS. But jhope was a street dancer whereas Jimin went to school for contemporary dance and was the top of his class. That's why if you notice, Jimin almost always stands in relaxed "first position," that's how you know :D

Hi, good reaction however it's true that most of BTS songs need explications video like Dope, Idol and Balckswan because they have many layers. This is why ARMY are known to have great translation website for lyrics and always focus on the lyrics, instrumental, vocal, dance and everything who make BTS music.
