    Great video Nef: I think you should have also included the part where he admits that they've basically been consistently rewritting and updating the game engine with every major patch. Since the ESO of today would never run on the engine that was initially coded/programmed for it. From a programming perspective, it explains a lot of the larger issues with the game including the frequency of bugs and the ever persistent lag in certain aspects of the game.

    This makes sense. It doesn’t explain why they refuse to add anything to cyrodil, BGs, or even dueling even if cyrodil is laggy. If they’re not going to be able to fix lag there, or update the performance on PC or next gen differently than older consoles, at least give players a reason to go to Cyrodil and have fun other than transmute crystals.

      Networking needs fixing*
      Performance is actually completely fine on PC. 120fps maxed out, with exception of unoptimized spots in certain maps.
      Network lag is what is pissing of pvp players and not hardware performance., people who got slow pc's its their fault. They already gave us multithreading support to improve overall performance.

    • @slippyC73
      @slippyC73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is exactly what he explains in the video. Cyrodil will never get better on last gen consoles. When he is talking about animations and limitations because only so many can be loaded, this is why it won't get better. In instances, BGs and small areas with smaller groups they could do some things. How much, I don't know. I wouldn't count on them adding a new playable race to the game that used different models though(goblins, trolls, etc).
      They can still do stuff like add abilities, but the visuals would be copy and paste from something else with a color change or something. On magic abilities that wouldn't make much difference anyway, mostly sparklies.
      I respect what they've been able to pull off from a console from 2014, but I don't appreciate how they've dragged people along with the lie there would ever be much they could do about lag in Cyrodil. They knew a long time ago they couldn't.

    If zos wants eso to exist well into the future, then they need to allow account transferring, ie transferring from console to pc. Theres literally thousands if not hundreds of thousands of console players who would transfer and even buy a pc in a heartbeat. I understand that theres probably not a way to do this, but realistically if theres a way then they should. I would even go as far as to say that most people would pay a big premium for this capability ($50?)

Consoles performance is garbage, and I dont regret for one instant making the change. Still play with a controller but the game runs lightyears better on pc. Its not hard to rebuild, given a discount on a bundle and grinding durring xp events. The knowledge I gained playing prior on xb1 made my pc restart SO much faster than my first build up.

      If It isn't then with the new generation consoles they'll be adding all these apparent features.
      You also have to realise not every pc player has a pc better than a console. So if they added these features a lot of people would have been locked out anyways.
      Saying a systems requirements is why they can't and haven't implemented improvements is a bold faced lie. Look at every other mmo that isn't even on a console.
      And man up, I've put 6 years into this game and restared twice in the last 2 years. Make the switch, achievements mean nothing you've got them before and it's never been easier to grind for CP

    the more unique assets and animations that are loaded into a game, the more space it takes up. People dont think about this stuff. They just look at graphics and thats it but memory is a big thing too, especially for inferior hardware, and they explained they want the game to be spread upon diverse graphics types, so im glad they explained this so that maybe many of these people will stop whining. I want to be able to play the game that I love. If that means no more new contact for a long time I am OK with that. And I think a lot of players are completely OK with that. I honestly dont think the developers are malicious in any way - they want their game to be fluid and playable by all.
    The issue comes for the lack of resources allocated to them for this, something that the vile money-minded stakeholders call "overhead costs".
    They would rather squeeze out as much money from the game as they can before it dies than to spend half a year focused entirely on bug fixes which not only makes them 0 profit, but also requires resources.

    Basically confirming what we all already knew, the limitations of consoles has sucked all of the potential features out of the game.
    I think the most crushing part is really early on. “We can’t add new animations… [because of console]”.
    Which makes sense why ESO has some of the worst animations, and spell effects in modern mmos. All the character use the same rig and the animations are minimalist and stilted.
    I thought this was just laziness, but it hurts even more I think knowing the game will never be able to break free and implement improvements because of its chain on its leg.

    I also wouldn't mind if they'd introduced some of the constraints that were around in Dark Age of Camelot, actually. I understand that ESO has a lot more PvE content, though, and it may not work as well for getting trial groups together, etc. But there was something pretty cool about not being to really interact with the other realms on Dark Age of Camelot. By the time it came to actual PvP, everyone on the other teams was basically a stranger, which I think helps drive an esprit de corps, because you actually have consequences for which realm you choose at the start of the game. But ESO gets pretty close to the old DAoC PvP feeling, and it's actually more balanced. So I'll take it.

      It's true honestly consoles limit innovation in gaming.
      But the way to fix it is give players cross save. That way they wont lose everything they worked for by switching..
      Eventually console players will move to pc or upgrade to better consoles. You cant hold progress back because some people refuse to upgrade hardware.
      Extend a lifeboat to them with cross save so whenever they can afford to move to a better console or pc they wont be punished by having to start over.

I appreciate that they didn't want to ask their customers to have to "keep up with the Jones'" when it comes to hardware. I just wonder at what point you jump ahead. Like is it unreasonable to move to the next gen in 2023? I'd think not, and I think that most gamers would get it. If you're only needing to upgrade hardware every 9-10 years, it's manageable.

    It makes more sence.I agree. Now ESO is based on adding things that were created before. Its kinda copy pasting content. That was old is also current content.Nothing new.Bugs, lags, players cant enter to the game or some ppl are kicked for exploit or trading a lot.
    Another thing that causing not relevant content is fixing stuff that will not fix most of existing bugs.In addition from patch to patch there is a lot unfortunate bugs coming to making older content than current patch less playable.
    Making sets that will allow you to kill characters in pvp will not feel new players to be more powerful ,because experienced player also can use that.Players are reading patch notes and testing things on pts,new ones dont know about that.
    A lot of players would only dream to get new extra content to pvp.In pve there are some new dungeons or trials, but some players want to make content to be more challenging cuz they want to take risks and learn new strategies.
    Without all of these things, the game its only patched old content with added events. For new players its game that is worth to atleast try to play. For experienced ones is boring and want to not waste any time, some leaving, some still want to keep up in it

Also i think some of his design choices have caused more harm than good. like MMOs have to evolve with time. you have MMos that are coming out that just FEEL better and look better, not saying that they will kill ESO but playing BDO or new world and then playing ESO. ESO feels like it was made back in like 2010 sometimes.

    They blame the lack of new skills in game mechanics on consoles but yet in other interviews they say they can't bring cross play because the PC version and the console version are totally different games. HMMMMM PS if you remember GTA v started out on Xbox 360 and Playstation, but eventually Rockstar gave up on the 360 version because the hardware could not handle it. So keep the console separate from the PC like it already is and continue with two different games expand the PC as far as computers can take it and stick within the limits of the Xbox x and start upgrading the Xbox x series

Sure the game is good and it works, but it only enforces my take becuase we are still limited due to it existing there, both games are held back SO much because they have to worry about consoles. People want new world on ps5, it would be like 14 fps at 1080p if it was. I do applaud the eso devs for getting it to be as smooth as it is, introducing multithreading to the pc version was a game changer, i literally gained like 40 fps and i maintain above 75 fps (my monitor is 75hz) IN major cities with 100 people running around. The fact that they are constantly limited in design and advancement by almost a decade-old, cheap console hardware is disheartening and scary. Maybe that explains why their necromancer is the worst necromancer take in video game history.

    • @cracmar03
      @cracmar03 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't tell me you are one of guys who wanted just to have Sorcerer 2.0 with undead instead of pets ... if that's take on necromancy then it's the basic one. I actually longed for necromancy take where it would be focused far more on what this magic actually is supposed to be - the manipulating of life force magic. Before ESO only decent takes on necromancy to my memory had Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Spellforce.
      Necromancy should be always so much more then just 'make dozens of zombies and follow me' take. I love ESO's take on necromancer, because it is finally not cliche 'edgy dude who raises skeletons to fight for him' take.
      It finally utilizes everything that magic should be, from raising spirits to temprorary aid you, to manipulating life force from corpses to aid you, to ressurection of allies - further connecting that Necromancy and Restoration are branches of same magic tree (just like Arcanum did), to pure damaging spells, to finally imbuing yourself with power of necromancy (which based of regular lichhood alone is yet another normal thing for necromancy to be capable of - to evolve user) and transform into Colossus.
      Only regret is that life stealing should be a thing on long range, but well I am okay with scythe. I actually laughed at it quite bit, definately getting into 'reaper' feeling of necromancy.

    • @Ditronus.
      @Ditronus. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cracmar03 ESO's necromancer is mostly bad and many other people view it as such. Summoning a skeleton that blows up into green goo every 3 seconds is undefendable and lazy in terms of combat design and animation. In a boss fight, I'd hardly call it interesting to push a button every 3 seconds to have a skeleton form up and fall down in the same spot with a number pop up, neither is it an entertaining animation to watch; it's a shame that it's so powerful that you're forced to use it--an example of more bad design. To criticize having multiple pets as being edgy, but summoning...scary tombstones that deal damage isn't? Necro gameplay, like every other build in this game, is static, repetitive, and boring in longer fights.
      I like some aspects of it, but yes, it is largely a wonky-looking cartoon of a class that still relies on the same skills most classes of their respective resource use, but that is a flaw with the game as a whole and not the class. They could have done so much more with the corpse mechanic, and yes, having undead minions is the most identifiable and desirable thing about a necromancer, not lobbing flaming skulls like hobgoblin. Couple of claymore-wielding draugr that interact with the corpse mechanic as a resource > spamming some fire skulls and exploding goo skeletons.

    And now you know they were always full of sh*t about fixing lag in PvP. They've known for a long time they couldn't(which I suspected it was because to many animations on screen at once). I'd imagine they can do a good bit for new consoles and more powerful PCs, but they are forced in working with the least common denominator.
    He was referring to animations. Basically only so many different ones can be loaded up at once to show simultaneous actions by multiple people. I wonder at different distances if there are generic animations(not the real animation) that gives illusion to keep the battles looking interesting? I mean you won't know the real ability someone casts at 50ft away, so I wonder if this is a strategy they use to cut down on lag.
    I disagree that this means they can't add new abilities(as long as the visuals were semi-recycled or just by using different colors). I would imagine new playable races, that weren't based on current models are not likely.
    The most interesting thing I came away from the interview with is it is Matt from DAoC. I know why I like the mechanics of this game so much now. Played DAoC for a long time(was my 2nd main MMO after Everquest). Before Mythic released Warhammer Online people begged with them to have a combat system like ESO(ESO didn't exist but we called the combat "active combat", which ESO later seemed to have pulled off). It's interesting to see someone from that crew finally saw the combat to fruition. Which I would say, he succeeded.

    "player hostile" (in reference to scaling & a social game) translation...no realistic consequences.

      And there's no way ESO is more social than other MMOs. What makes a game social is hard content that requires players to work together. ESO has easy content and companions, super anti-social game by design unless you raid.

      Same here, I spend my days at work sat up in front of a PC, I really don’t want to be doing that at home as well!

    Just like previous mmos on older consoles. In the next 1-2 yrs I see eso leaving last gen because it is being held back way to much and tech can’t keep up on the old gens.

    I mean, FF14 was the second MMORPG in that franchise and is to this day one of the biggest MMORPG's in the world. So I mean, yes it has been done, and can be done but the odds are definitely against the developers imo. Also, Guild wars 2 and destiny 2.

    Damn, then they need to somehow move console megaservers to new ones. Or start developing pc megaservers with tech updates, and then have to decide what console can handle. Like I really want new class. I've been waiting for something like Bard or Elemental Mage for years at this point. I want more furniture slots too.
    And can console handle improved character creator models ? Is this why we can't have longer hair too ?
    If this is how it goes, it is about time to make decision to slowly move ESO console megaservers either to next gen or just stop developing it aside of pc. Let pc flourish first and then try to adjust changes to outdated consoles.
    I don't think console players will be mad, they know their hardware limitations.
