Are you using a torch? If you feel like you don't have quite enough heat I would add a second torch. Have one mounted on a table and then you can hold the other one if you'd like. You can also try adding some borax which can help remove impurities. Check out one of my more recent videos on how to use borax.
Also, make sure that your main torch is a 'max heat' torch. I believe it's the Bernzomatic TS8000. Also noted in this video. 👇 th-cam.com/video/XVQFdvp6pYk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VvwrTJQRhfsdTCow
I have found some rock containing silver sulfide in the mountain, please tell me how and with what acid can I convert silver sulfide into silver metal, with what materials should I dissolve it and with what materials should I precipitate it 🙏🙏
Hey, I got this particular graphite mold from eBay. You can find various graphite molds on both eBay and Amazon these days. However for the most part I really prefer to pour in petrebond molds which can be double-sided or single-sided depending on what you want to do. You can buy silver shot which is what I use almost exclusively for all of my pieces. Silver shot can be bought online at places like apmex.com, but I purchase virtually all of my silver shot from Facebook groups and I have since found two people that are very reliable and priced a little bit better than Apmex for example.
Hi Joshua. I have been melting silver for various projects. But I have not been able to get those crucibles to work right. I tried to do the borax trick, but the borax just melted in with the silver when I melted the silver.... What is the trick to correctly boraxing the crucible so the borax doesn't just remelt into the silver and ruin it? It ruined my silver and the crucible....
Hi, I'm going to try to get a crucible glazing video out here in the next week or two. When you're glazing your crucible you really want the thinnest layer of borax on it as possible, as long as it covers the entire surface of The crucible on the inside and rim. Even when done perfectly you'll often times get a little bit of borax that will melt into your first one or two pours. Either plan for this and polish off any excess borax on your silver. Or, I usually make a point of my first few pours going into a double-sided mold, that way any excess borax will end up at the top on your extra silver pour over. You can then just remelt the excess silver from the spout and burn off any extra borax moving forward. Watch for my crucible glazing video coming up soon 👍
@@JoshuaAndersonLife thanks for the reply! With the research I am doing, why should I not just use a graphite crucible instead, that doesn't need borax? It seems like that would make sense. And unfortunately I am not pouring into a mold. I am making spanish cobs, so it will get poured directly onto an anvil both as individual small circles I will flatten into coins as well as the more traditional method of pouring a whole strip of silver and then cutting it up and making those crude shapes into coins exactly like they did back in the pirate days! Fun stuff. Since I couldn't get the crucible to work, I have just been melting the silver on a polished piece of steel. Which works fine for small amounts actually. But not more than 1oz at a time. And still not ideal either.
Hey Josh, I was just thinking about finally melting down my scrap silver. I’ve had the mold that has two sides. One is for sheet metal and the other is for different sizes of wire. Do you happen to know what the name of the spray you use for the mold? It’s used to prevent the metal from sticking to the mold? I want to order it and while I pretty much order everything from Rio you have to be totally specific on what you want when your ordering online. They’re system is definitely NOT user friendly! It’s not bad when customer service is there during the day. They usually know what you’re talking about. If you know, a quick response from you would be awesome! Thanks! Teri Urban Muse
Hey, sorry for the late reply. I just got Google analytics and started using it for the first time, and realized I was missing so many comments that I didn't know I had before. With two-sided molds I actually just use Gold Bond body powder, which used to be simply talcum powder. I'm pretty sure I show using it in some of my pouring videos? I'm about to put out a video on Saturday that will show the use of it for two-sided mold.
Right on! I’ll look for it. It should probably be out by now. I’m late reading and responding to your late response! Lol! It all good! Thanks so much for the much needed info. That’s definitely a lot cheaper than what I’d end up paying for whatever I would buy from Rio! 😉
Same with me. I resorted to putting the silver in my forge to get it to melt. Luckily I have that at least...but no clue why my map won't get hot enough.
Same. I can get very small amounts (less than 10 grams) to melt after about 5 minutes, but anything over that... nope. Really curious on the brand of torch being used here.
Torch is a Bernzomatic TS8000... Should work really well! If you watch some of my newer videos you'll see I started using a two torch setup one fixed and one that I hold on to. The fixed one is a Bernzomatic TS 4000.
Sorry for such a late reply, there was a period of time where I was not getting any notifications. It can be profitable, however really mostly only as a hobby in my opinion unless you can dedicate a lot of time to it. It can be done with regular torches you can buy at hardware stores or with ovens that you can buy from Amazon or eBay.
I'm not trying to troll you, but the silver would melt SO MUCH faster if you find the best angle and fix your max-heat head in one spot. Moving around costs a lot more time. Other than that, nice setup for what you're doing.
Yeah I agree I was moving around a bunch in that video. Watch one of my newest videos and you can see I do much less of that, which is my normal method. Sometimes I'll move more if I'm reaching for something or checking my phone... th-cam.com/video/qY3pH9HDuqM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1kXhnpzASFnJ6PRK
Friendly heads up bro. Your mic gain is too low. I checked your most recent video, and apparently you haven't changed it. It's really hard to hear without earbuds, so you're probably losing most of viewers as soon as they realize they can't hear you well.
Thank you for the info! I know there's a short 2 - 3 sec section in the silver refining video where the sound cuts out, but I don't hear any problems on newer videos when I listen on my computer or earbuds. In this particular video I probably should have reduced the background noise more however. I'll pay more attention to this moving forward. Thank you for the feedback.
That's possibly the best silver pour i've ever seen, at least without higher temps. thx!

No, it's MAPP gas.
Where do you get the molds
You can buy various graphite molds on Amazon or ebay.
Please make a complete video in which 1 to 2kg silver and cadmium are being molten and poured into a mould.
Is it possible to just put the silver shavings in the skull mold and melt it from there or will it not work that way?
It's typically much faster to melt in a crucible and pour. Maybe I'll do a video on this 👍

You could use silver solder... You're best off buying silver shot if you plan to keep making silver pieces however.
Why do you not use Borax to season your crucible?

Hey, yes I did post that video it's the one about melting down and replicating a Morgan silver dollar.
What brand of torch did you use for this?
Torch is Bernzomatic TS8000
What’s the max amount of oz one would be able to melt this way before having to move to a different method?
The max I would pour with a torch and ceramic crucible is about 5ozt. Then move to a furnace with larger graphite crucible for bigger pours.
How do I learn this?
Watch various TH-cam videos. It's really quite simple, just be sure to be safe with your methods, and wear safety equipment.

Caused by oxidation from the copper in 925 silver. Just pickle and you’re good
