Thank you Dr. Grande for another breathtaking video about the Dark Triad 😃 Can you talk once about; "Why don't people know they have a personality disorder"?
I believe, from observation, that symptoms of machiavellianism, schizotypal and dark triad traits move in and out of someone on the narcissistic spectrum. Some of those traits provoked by marijuana use.
Isn't everyone on the narcissistic spectrum?... maybe not enough to be diagnosed with narcissistic but narcissism is a human trait its only a personality disorder when it becomes so extreme that it impedes normal life or causes distress to yourself or those close to you?
I'd like to see this too. I've never found a very good explanation for the traditional schitzotypal symptoms of odd speech, ideas of reference, magical thinking, even what differentiates odd appearance from the lack of self-care manifested in some other illnesses.
Good idea! I am wondering about that too. Researching it on my own, I concluded that this was a word salad. I look forward to Dr. Grande's video on it.
Could you please do a video on Personality disorders and the professions and which those disorders are most prevalent. Thank you I enjoy watching your videos and learning. I am also a medical student.
No ones life can be 100% regulated. Tires blow, other people are inconsistent, offices don’t always work.... but Dr.’s videos can change enough level of gullibility you can save your life.
Can Dr. Grande or anyone please list a few fictional characters (or media personalities) that might indicate schizotypal personality disorder, I'm at a total loss about what this looks like in the real-world.
Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro is often given as a classical example. Check out russian girl Alla. Search Alla schizotypal on utube for her channel. She is very honest and open about her symptoms and struggles and seems to help many with STPD.
Great analysis Dr. Grande! The level of excellence on what you present goes above and beyond of what we find out there. The content, the scientific research analysis, your own brilliant inputs, the pace and duration of your videos make your channel an amazing source of information. I truly thank you for this amazing work!
I miss your visual graphics in this one. Very interesting topic but found myself drifting off here and there. I think screen graphics would help visual learners stay focused. Going to rewatch it tho, to catch what I missed. Thx.
Thank you for the information about some of the traits pulling in opposite directions. It reminds me of the Rocco character in Key Largo. He says to his long time female companion that he “wants to do right by her”; Then he gives a longer list why he isn’t going to and has her beaten up.

I do find it confusing that 'psychopathy' as a whole is characterised by low impulse control and difficulties with delayed gratification. This fits secondary psychopathy (and ASPD), but not really primary psychopathy as far as I undestand them. It certainly doesn't fit the notion of the CEO, snakes in suits, type psychopaths which I imagine are generally the latter. Even primary and secondary psychopathy seem to pull in different directions. Can't help thinking this would confuse comparisons.
Thankyou for your videos. I never realised what the Dark Triad was. I now realise my mother has this. I wish I lived closer to speak to you about it. Alana
Found this very hard to follow. You out lined the symptoms of SPD followed by "the dark triad", but did not make clear - at lest in any tangible sense to the lay man - how these "traits" relate to SPD. Can someone inform me; Does it mean that if you have SPD you are also likely to encompass traits of the "dark triad" as i fail to see how the two relate as they are on separate clusters of the DSM. I apologise for my obvious ignorance in this regard but i have faild to recognise the connection being made in the video
Hi Dr. Grande! Would you like to make a video about the reasons why Schizotypal and Schizoid Personality Disorders can't be diagnosed during the course of Autism Spectrum Disorder? Greetings from Bulgaria and please, excuse my English... :D
Schizotypy can come across as narcissistic in the colloqual sense of being highly arrogant/self important. I had a roommate who almost certain had Schizotypal PD and I just rememberbing how offputting it was he thought all these celebrities and politicans and foreign governments even were cummunicating with and responding to him. Hes sort of an ex leftwing activist turned right wing conspiracy theorist who fancies himself to be a kind of Julian Assaunge character. What weirdos on Tiktok would call a "targeted individual". The imaginativeness impressed me I told him he should write a book about a fictional character that experienced those things.
Could you discuss diagnosing PDs specifically... "Significant impairments in self and interpersonal functioning" Some people with PDs seem to function well or is this a misperception?
i think that you answered your own question somewhat by describing functioning with PDs the way you did. Seeming to function well doesn't mean there's no impairment. at least in my experience with mental illness in general, i Seem to be very high functioning. i get to where i need to be early, which is a good thing! but it's because i have severe anxiety about lateness, causing me to overprepare, leave far too early... it's limiting and symptomatic in its own way, and causes a lot of stress, even though to an outside observer, it's probably thought of as a positive thing. seeming to function =/= functioning
How culturally specific is this and how does it overlap with religious belief and experience? I have all but #7 but I find a strangeness in emotion. I find scary things funny, dangerous things seem thrilling (fear charges me up), and romantic feelings redirect into creative pursuits. I usually avoid dark triads but can't escape them in work situations and I fear that I draw attention and set them off.
that was fascinating :o i find the variable of impulse control so valuable, how it relates to increased affect of clust b or diminished affect of cluster a, since machiavellianism would depend so much on them, assuming that its excercised successfully of course, intricate planning could certainly find itself undermined by the lack of insight in how behaviours contribute to cause and effect 🤔
In my opinion, the finding on machiavellianism and Schizotypals is explained by machiavellianism being the manipulation of enviroment so that the subject thrives and gains what they want and need. This, in personality disorders, is merely a survival mechanism that acts in the subjects best interests for optimal survival and protection against change or opposition. Think of borderline. Were not talking material gains or success, but the here the goal is to be loved and chances of abandonment need to be thwarted. This is a survival mechanism, then, a machiavellian need, to play the game in their favor. Real or perceived abandonment equals manipulation to prevent that. In their best interest. They will do what it takes to ensure the survival of their mental self, with no change or opposition.
(I might be wrong or maybe I zoned out at some point) I don't think this research considered "vulnerable" narcissism as a link to SPD (both having the social isolation and reclusive aspects among others traits in common that Grandiose narcissism doesn't.) But I could be wrong.
@@stoneyvowell1239 Well I'd assume that's why the majority of this channel's subscribers are here. @@turritopsis4832Well I'm itching to take you up on your offer to call you narrow minded ;) Just teasing you a little, however, you said that "no one should turn to 'spirituality' to attempt to understand the complexities of the human psyche". I'd like to remind you that we're all different, and if *you* don't get anything out of Spirituality, that's perfectly fine, but some of us do get a great deal from it. You may laugh, but in my case, *Astrology* was a really good starting point for gaining insight into my personality and my life's purpose. Btw, I'm not talking about that copy-paste Sun Sign bs that one sees in magazines, but about real Astrology that takes into account the whole Natal Chart. Yes I realise how ridiculous it may sound, and I probably would have laughed, too, before I learnt what real Astrology is. Try it yourself some time - there are loads of websites that do free Natal Chart analysis, (although you'll learn more if you just get your chart drawn up with a free calculator, but analyse it yourself by searching online for the meanings). You'll be blown away by the accuracy, and you'll either learn or have confirmed a lot about yourself, your life up until now, and even your whole purpose in this lifetime. If you're wondering why I'm banging on about Astrology, when you were talking about Spirituality - Well, for me, Astrology is part of my Spirituality. Anyhow, what do I know lol? I'm just a random stranger with a hefty dose of Schizotypy, so if you want to discard this post as being that of some nutjob, that's fine. I'm still going to post this, because it may just prove useful to someone who is searching for answers about themself or the meaning of their life or of life in general. Also, I'm doing my own kind of exposure therapy, trying to communicate with people more often, especially about things that could lead to rejection. Now let's see if I can actually post this, (and not delete it lol)! P.S. I usually find Western, Tropical Astrology, Placidus system to be the most accurate for me, but there are so many different types, one of which may work better for you. It's probably best to start with Western, Tropical, Placidus first, though, mainly because it's the system with the most free calculators and info online.
Thank you for your videos on these subjects.. I’m married to someone who is at least a malignant narcissist but also has characteristics of psychopathy.. some of his characteristics are confusing to me. I study this for my own strength.. he would never go to counseling as he sees psychology as a pseudoscience.. he is very covert in public, but in private he is overt.. we are in a religion where divorce isn’t an option, so he knows I can’t leave him. It’s just too bad for me if I don’t like how he acts.. so I study to educate myself. One thing that confuses me is that he seems to not need anyone.. he’s perfectly happy alone.. he only tolerated me because I bring in a good income which he demands I hand over to him. He doesn’t seem to care about friends and he has none. He treats me good in public, so he does care about appearing to be a great guy. But in private he is horrible or he ignores me fore days, weeks or even months.. I just want to understand what I’m up against.. he was very abusive.. verbally, emotionally, financially, and even physically until I reported him and he stopped hitting me. But he knows he can hurt me without laying a hand on me., he seems to be sadistic and enjoys hurting me. No matter how horrible things are he is able to go to bed and go right to sleep. He never loses sleep over anything. He even told me once that if I left him he wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. I know that’s true.. what kind of personality am I dealing with?
I bet when you try to think about why your god would want you to suffer for no reason you can’t come up with a good excuse. Isn’t it tiring to keep up these mental gymnastics?
My God this is so upsetting to read, this was 5 years ago but I really hope you managed to get free from your situation, I know you're trying to abide by your religions rules but you are suffering, surely there are reasonable exceptions to the rules in circumstances like these! I hope you've been able to do what is right for your sanity and health to leave the abusive marriage you're in! 🙏🏾
I am a teenager and am somewhat afraid that I am literally developing narcissistic personality disorder. I used to genuinely care about people I think, but like, I really feel just very apathetic about other people's emotions now and i think other people don't deserve my time, and I'm generally above everyone (which might just be because I'm in high school and everybody around is dumb as hell) but when I'm not thinking about how I'm probably the reincarnation of Jesus, i'm thinking about how awful and incompetent I actually am and how self deluded I must be to think these things. basically, since I'm not an adult yet, that means there is still time for me to change before I am set in this way. The problem is that I don't really know how to do that. Like, I can't just suddenly force myself to start caring about other people's trivial lives. I feel how I feel, but I don't wanna actually make bad choices or inflict pain emotionally on others. Advice?
Advice, well this advice should be said to everyone but not everyone does it: Be true to yourself. If you genuinely think other people are dumb then think like it. If you don't really care about others then don't try to care about others. And know that everyone isn't either a "good" or "bad" person. Maybe youre family has mental illness in the family tree? Perhaps check that out. Either way, you seem kinda screwed if you genuinely feel like that. Just live it and wait until somethings or some people slap you around and maybe change your demeanor. sincerely from a schizotypal :P pppppbbblllt *farts*
Take an IQ test, make sure it’s not your intelligence vs your peers. Look at your friends make sure it’s not their influence. If you wrote this message it either came from a narcissistic person or not. If you mean this message than you’re probably not. You’re young. Remember being nice is different than being honest. Honesty can protect you from narcissistic traits. Start being truthful to yourself 100% of the time and as much as possible at least don’t lie to others. You’re fine

Confusion
No, personality disorders are permanent. However, there are cases in which Schizotypal evolves into Schizophrenia. They may also be downgraded in the case of misdiagnosis. While there are no cures, there are treatments for them, such as Psychotherapy and Antipsychotics.
@Generic Name I'm not sure what you're implying by this. I don't see the point of labeling either as such, lest we create stigma. If you're diagnosed with either, you should know better. If we're going by old and archaic definitions of insanity, they're both "insane" and would probably get you locked up in the 1950's. I was diagnosed with both, so with that logic, I'm a complete and total lunatic.
@Generic Name As much as I like their songs, I actually have not heard that. I'll give it a listen. I thought you were referring to actual stigma traits. I'm aware that drugs and chemicals can induce psychosis. However, I'm talking merely illness and disorder.
Dr. Grande, is there any way to rid myself of STPD? I mean, is there any treatment that could result in me getting re-diagnosed as not being a schizotype or is this a lifelong condition that I just have to cope with?
Personality disorders are permanent. Schizotypal, in some cases, becomes Schizophrenia. However, this is not true for everyone. While there are no cures, there is treatment for it. Don‘t feel ashamed for it, embrace it. Schizotypal is rare. Only 4% society has it. It means you think different and your brain is just programmed uniquely. That is something to take pride in. Don‘t let mental health stigmas get you down. If you feel you have been misdiagnosed, let your provider know.
Seeing as some of the overlapping traits will lean one way or another is sometimes unexpected or ways that confuse diagnosis, can this be mistaken for bipolar or manic depressive? Can one be all of these and manic depressive with intent to harm or is it's 100% overlapped by the triad therefore yes but would not be called both just triad
I'm confused about why with increased psychopathy there is more positive symptoms e.g. cognitive deficits and disorganised? Aren't these symptoms related to psychosis?
wait... im really scared , i have a diagnosis of scizotypal traits . Dose that mean i might be a Narcissist, or antisocial? i really hope not because i have OCD and worry that im secretly a bad person all the time.
I'd say if you worry about being bad it shows a desire to be good, so thats the direction you'll grow into.. just my thoughts, because I was worried when it mentioned the dark triad along with schizotypal on this video too
There’s not much research on this topic. & I’m Schizotypal, for it can be fun because it helps me to be more creative & allows me to be more understanding to others who have similar scary experiences I’ve had from my symptoms. I hope you’re doing better

Schizotypals definitely make the cluster A's appear less fearless due to their magical thinking, and they also have positive delusional ideations which makes them even more fearless, so clearly cluster A's have no mercy with cluster B's. That means cluster A's for the rescue!!!
I have a triva ? for you about one kind of American [What some would consider counter] culture that might amuse you and your viewers of videos Dr. Grande. Here goes: What word means both shy and prosititue? Answer: the word for both indicated by only one executed with the dominant hand being used to speak in American sign language. Here is a popular line in plays and a joke in deaf culture to go with it: "What is so great about hearing culture" Another piece of information useful for experts to consider: Human trafficking victims who cannot use spoken language could sure be used to make a whole lot of profit while maintaining many relationships outside of their family for their pimp sometimes right under the noses of welfare checks and right under the noses of all the staff in long term care homes they are being forced to reside in sometimes during their whole grade school experience too.
I would much rather have one of the disorders from the dark triad than to have schizotypal disorder. Then at least maybe I could have achieved something in my life or have friends and a girlfriend 😣 The struggle is real.
Your research is wrong. There is a relationship between schizotypal and the dark triad but it is not what you think of as a healthy relationship. The dark triad is lacking in creativity except for evil. Being the predatory monsters that they are, they are able to differential between individuals on the creativity scale. Therefore, the dark triad finds these isolated creative schizotypals roaming around and sees an opportunity to use them while they are destroying them. The dark triad can't help but destroy them in the end because after all they are the dark triad. I think if you studied older surviving schizotypal individuals you would find that they have banned the dark triad from their life because it always ends bad for them. I used the word survived because the dark triad will try to suicide them for fun even though it will mean the loss of the schizotypal's creativeness which the dark triad sees as coming from with in themselves and they can't see the long term effects of their actions. The dark triad will steal the ideas from the schizotypal individual and will attack the schizotypal if they try to defend their intellectual property. The mask of the dark triad is everything to them and being exposed for their weakness of not being able to have positive ideas that back up the image of malevolent leader that they try to project is seen by them as a weakness that must be covered up. Therefore, they will keep a schizotypal on the side and under their control. Often having isolated relationships in full view of others. If this relationship were between two young men and the schizotypal found a girlfriend the dark triad member would sabotage the relationship in a way that the schizotypal didn't understand. The dark triad sees the schizotypal as their slave that should 100% serve them. The schizotypal brain is very similar to the bipolar super brain only better IMO. Both groups have their ideas stolen by the dark triad. That is why you find a anxiety filled individual in the shadows saying they have had their ideas stolen from the by a tech giant billionaire like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. This is why the Bipolar individuals kill the dark triad gangs for bullying them. The schizotypal and bipolar individuals are the victims while the dark triad individuals are crocodiles that deserve their punishment 100% of the time.
Are you a Machiavellian dark triad Dr. Grande? I can feel you bad energy being radiated out of your videos. I know, it is all about the mask and the power of the lie.
Hi Troy, I think I might understand what you are saying. What Dr.Grande is saying that schizotypals have traits from the dark triad to SOME extent. He is talking about a study that did poor to little research on schizotypal. And of course this should be obvious, it depends on what extent to the schizotypal individual. Like for example, perhaps you have much less narcissicism and machiavellianism and psychopathy and just have the straight book definition of a schizotypal: magical thinking, eccentric, paranoid, etc. Where me on the other hand I do have some dark triad traits. :3 Which surprises me but I can see how I have those traits. I do however have the ability to feel guilty/remorse/regret unlike a true narcissist. And as im getting older my psychopathy is lowering, I'm under 25 years old. I'm able to control my impulses, more like my emotional impulses I guess. Have a good day and take it easy! :D

When I was six years old my stepmother left me in a doorway with a note saying not wanted.....
Can Dr. Grande or anyone please list a few fictional characters (or media personalities) that might indicate schizotypal personality disorder, I'm at a total loss about what this looks like in the real-world.
hmm maybe luna lovegood from harry potter? i don't know.

Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro is often given as a classical example. Check out russian girl Alla. Search Alla schizotypal on utube for her channel. She is very honest and open about her symptoms and struggles and seems to help many with STPD.
I was thinking of Amelie the character in French movie. Maybe. It kind of fits.
Let me know your thoughts?

Great analysis Dr. Grande!
The level of excellence on what you present goes above and beyond of what we find out there. The content, the scientific research analysis, your own brilliant inputs, the pace and duration of your videos make your channel an amazing source of information.
I truly thank you for this amazing work!
I'm unclear as to why Schizotypy and the dark triad traits are being compared. What was the point of the study?
agreed
So odd

Alana
Once again thanks Dr. G.
How is mental health treated in the Balkans and what is the public and medical perception of it?
Fascinating and verified by my personal observation.
Just because you are paranoid, does not mean someone is not following you. It just means you are paranoid....🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can’t sleep won’t sleep
Could you discuss diagnosing PDs specifically...
"Significant impairments in self and interpersonal functioning"
Some people with PDs seem to function well or is this a misperception?
i think that you answered your own question somewhat by describing functioning with PDs the way you did.
I don’t see how having no friends is a symptom
I would be interested in hearing your commentary about Kevin Spacey's Let me be Frank video.
@@stoneyvowell1239 I don't know you might be right or not, eh
@@stoneyvowell1239 Well I'd assume that's why the majority of this channel's subscribers are here. Attempting to understand either ourselves or a batshit family member etc. As a side note, call it narrow minded, but no one should turn to "spirituality" to attempt to understand the complexities of the human psyche, aside from the effects of religious childhood indoctrination and the alike.

You need to quit that religion then so you can get rid of him. Good luck:)
Sounds like a narcissistic/machiavellianism. You should quit your religion perhaps? And then leave him.
I bet when you try to think about why your god would want you to suffer for no reason you can’t come up with a good excuse. Isn’t it tiring to keep up these mental gymnastics?
A jehovahs wittness
My God this is so upsetting to read, this was 5 years ago but I really hope you managed to get free from your situation, I know you're trying to abide by your religions rules but you are suffering, surely there are reasonable exceptions to the rules in circumstances like these! I hope you've been able to do what is right for your sanity and health to leave the abusive marriage you're in! 🙏🏾
I am uncomfortable occupying space. Feel like someone could use it better.
You’re fine

Is the personality traits permanent for entire life time or it keeps on switching over time?
Jus meditate

When he psychotically shouts at the TV and says to himself 15 times that he doesn't like me, - although he said to girlfriend 5 years ago that he wouldn't have managed without me, - what is true? Can both be true? Am I disrespecting him by going away at his request, but trying again some weeks/months later, or being as faithful and moral/ethical as I intend? He speaks of dying and has burnout symptoms, his body showing signs of impending cardiovascular attack, and is very lonely - I don't want him to die in that state, not able to take good care of himself, drinking Schizophrenia-aggravating/-causing things like lots of coffee, milk, Coke/soda pop, beer, NO WATER at all! - and smokes, is sleepless, anxious, aggressive, shouts, speaks very loud with wide opened crazy-looking eyes, very depressed and exhausted, sedentary life, disheartened, and unsafe/fearful with childhood trauma, a Highly sensitive person, artistic, imaginative, warm-hearted, spiritual, extrovert, social. Can it be my medical knowledge and active wanting to help him heal/get better/save him from acute illness/death at least, that makes him irritated, because he can't understand the seriousness? ( He has the Cholesterol ring on brain area of Iris, a sugar -problem lump on eyelid, etas too much protein, has Erectile dysfunction, apathy "coma"-like inertia, very dry mouth and teeth erosion, black around eyes (can be sign óf Adrenal fatigue).
Can't totally let him be alone in that terrible state that is killing him any time, and don't want any more locked-in psychiatric chemical straight-jacket, but treat naturally , as soon as he lets me.
How do I know when his normal self is there to be addressed, and when the psychotic delusional one? It may feel insulting to be talked to as a fragile one when stronger, more normal. He gets angry when I don't agree t his delusions and strange, even false ideas, i e that he is not psychotic. I don-t think false pretense helps him get real,. Schizotypals definitely make the cluster A's appear less fearless due to their magical thinking, and they also have positive delusional ideations which makes them even more fearless, so clearly cluster A's have no mercy with cluster B's. That means cluster A's for the rescue!!!

Often laugh for no reason and at inappropriate times. Poor affect and it's a release.

What did I just read?
You take way too long to get to the point
