    Absolutely one of the best Tenkara setup videos I’ve seen. Super informative and simple. Thank you so much! I just purchased my own rod and accessories and I am anxious to get started. I’ve fly fished for years, but I love different methods of fishing. Amazing!

      I'm stoked you're starting your tenkara journey! Tight lines, you're going to do great.

    It's OK to use 4-6 ft of tippit, it will help with hook ups do to the fish not getting spooked. 2lb test tippit is best for small trout. Great video and a great job on your first time. I love tenkara fishing and do it almost exclusively.

      Should you decrease the line length with longer tippet? I have a zoom rod that goes from 11 to 13 feet. If I use 4 feet of tippet how long should my line be? I'm short too if that matters. Thanks for helping a newbie.

    • @rodhagerty
      @rodhagerty 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karmahavok the standard is your line is the length of your rod and tippet half the length. Example 12ft rod 12ft line and tippet would be 6 ft. You may have to experiment with the shorter length. I would change the length of tippet from 4 to 6 ft if necessary depending length of rod your using but try using max length first. You maybe surprised how easy it works.

    Who knew growing up in Mississippi in the 70's I was tenkara fishing with my grandpa with cane poles in the creeks??? Been doing it for 50 years.

      @@Charsept yeah...I bought furled leaders $10 each..... this is cheaper.... I melt paraffin and drop some strands then squeegee excess HOT paraffin off (while it's hot)..... I don't do them all that way but when it is windy I use one that has paraffin on it because it is slightly heavier..... of course I did that with some of my furled leaders too...... anyway experimenting is interesting..... some are soaked just halfway..... yup

    I’ve read some anglers use level line instead of furled leader like you have? Do you know why you’d pick one of the other?
    I’m just starting out

    • @castandspear
      @castandspear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I started with furled line with a fluoro leader. I recently just switched to a level line with a fluoro leader. The level line helped me catch finicky fish that were skittish with the thick furled one. Casting with the level line took a bit of learning, but I think it'll be my default going forward. Good luck out there and keep me posted on what you catch!

    • @karmahavok
      @karmahavok 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of it the first time only. Lots of ways to save time at home by tying tippet at various lengths to various lengths of line and store these in line holders.

      I haven't used them much so I can't speak to them like I can Dragontail. What I've heard it's that Tenkara USA hasn't been innovating as much as others, but it's usually btwn Dragontail and them for purchases. Dragontail also makes nirvana, their higher end rod that I just got and it's very nice. Sorry I couldn't be of more help
