    Information is vital.
    In university people discuss "all idea & all sides". There's a deep discussion happening.
    Not one side Good/ One side Bad mentality. Only follow my way.
    Being questioned is good at university, if what is discussed is true it'll hold up on its own merits.
    It doesn't need to be defended constantly.
    Do deep discussion with top TH-camrs and discuss often.
    Let ideas flow...

    Thank you for your hard work and dedication to your research and videos Dr. Novak. I am on a watching spree! I am now Implementing plenums in each of my aquariums. Supplies are arriving today. The list of supplies for both tank "re-setups" includes: Lees 30 inch and Penn-plax 20 inch undergravel plates for the plenum, 3 Ziss never clog adjustable air stones, 2 Tetra 2-10 gal whisper pumps, ADA gravel, ADA la plata sand, Aqua natural Gold Pearl New Zealand river gravel, Estes black spectrastone gravel for the base layer contacting the plate, 17.6lbs of Fluval stratum, Brightwell Aquatics Florin Base laterite powder, kitty litter.
    I am going to use BCB bags in each of my Oase 150 FiltoSmart Thermo canisters with kitty litter and laterite powder as well as the plenums under gravel + kitty litter or fluval stratum, and laterite powder for anoxic filtration. I figured it would be best to double down with your methods to ensure success.

      Coming from a guy that has spent way too much money in the high tech planted realm and still battled algae, constant water changes, daily dosing, and constant trimming, using ADA's substrate system with power sand etc etc, I am extremely excited to use this system. I hope to send in photos of the progress soon. Thanks again!

Then of course all your questions will be answered. Right now the experiments and research I did in the experiments and reach research that Dr. Franco did in Italy just doesn't seem to be enough for people. Maybe if universities get involved in it then people may, not positively, except the technology that is being presented on this TH-cam station.

    can i use pure zeolite and soak it in liquid iron to make an anoxic filtration?

  • @garethbaker3429
    @garethbaker3429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Kevin, that’s great news, well done!!
    The biggest issues on our side of the Atlantic (Europe) with building multiple BCB’s is the availability and cost of Laterite. The substitute most commonly put forward as a replacement is Aquabasis. But this only has 1% iron.
    Can you please confirm if the bacteria actually use up the iron? Because I was told on a form that it’s only required at the start.
    I am awaiting delivery of iron oxide, I should have it in 3 weeks so I can test if it works and be sure it does not leach into the aquarium from the BCB.
    But if the bacteria only need it at the setup stage then I am wasting my time!
    Can you please confirm if the bacteria need a substrate in the center of the BCB with 10% iron oxide like laterite or if 1% will be ok?
    Thanks again

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1% iron is more than enough to get things going.

    • @garethbaker3429
      @garethbaker3429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Kevin, but that’s not my question.
      I know 1% is enough to get it going, my worry is it stopping.
      If I have 20 BCB’ all built with 1% and in a year they suddenly stop working, every fish will die. I can’t just replace them because it takes two months to set them up.
      Does the iron in the BCB reduce over time?
      Thanks again

I still not having success with the plants (I think due to the lack o direct sunlight) and the way the system is it has a planting bed, with pot planting clay, above the aquarium and a water pump flood the planting bed 15 minutes every hour during the day (turned off during the night), but after the pumps turn off the water drains back to the tank, I think that is not ideal as the clay got exposed to the air. I first became aware of the use and benefits of a plenum quite a number of years ago (I will not say how many) when studying the Jaubert Method or Monaco Style for my reef aquaria. I used that method with varying degrees of success, which is hard to quantify with all of the other subsystems, as you know, are required to maintain a flourishing reef aquarium properly. When I discovered your channel sometime last year and listened to your explanations regarding the use of clay substrates and laterite with a plenum and the construction of BCBs, it supercharged what I learned years ago and opened my eyes to new possibilities. I have since converted all of my aquariums, both freshwater and salt, to using BCB's and/or slow-moving plenums with great success and amazing results. Keep being you, doctor. I was in the process of making my first slow moving plenum. My entire substrate is Safe T Sorb. I sprinkled laterite over the first half inch layer of clay. Then the remaining 2.5 inches of clay substrate over that.
    When I was filling the tank, there was an accident and the water hit the substrate and catered enough to send laterite through the tank.
    Do I need to start all over again, or since the entire substrate is baked clay, it'll be okay? Like flourite. My concern is that laterite is all over the top of my substrate. I'm not sure how much is still underneath.

      It is a common accident most of us experienced unless we take great pains like putting a plate to deflect the incomming water. It should be ok as the laterite will be pulled in by your plenum gradually.There is no need to redo. Next is the hard part of waiting for the plenum to work. Be patient for atleast 3weeks.
