People need to learn from other people how they do things and not be scared of doing them. You just showing people how to do something and now that gives them more confidence on what they're going to be doing.
Kitty litter takes care of my 3 cats wastes... SO, I have no doubt it can take care of the far much smaller fish! I am a layman & it's a no brainer! I can barely explain anything you are teaching us, BUT, I get the concept. I had tons of filtration on my 29 Gal yrs ago & I still failed & had fish die!
Hello kevin. .. always nice to see others aquariums and the anoxic movement is gaining traction ! Just ordered my top off substrate , which is black blasting sand and so will now have all I need to reset up my initial tank with a slow moving plenum and hopefully goodbye algae !
Dr Novak, I have built 4 BCB baskets for 4 of my aquariums. I used plastic Tupperware containers that I drilled holes in all over them. I then filled them with baked clay (kitty litter) leaving a used toilet roll in the middle, which I filled with Seachem's Flourite Red as I couldn't find laterite. I then closed the containers with the lids and put them into sumps. 1 aquarium did not have a sump, so I simply put it into the aquarium, making sure to hide it behind some plants. I am now waiting for 45 - 60 days for them to become colonised. I would like to share the photos of them with you if I knew where to send them. Thank you for teaching your discoveries with the world. Every fish keeper should know your Anoxic filtration system I believe.
I look forward to seeing what you set up for the goldfish and a new filtration system. You are correct when you state that people will never change the way they do things. I clicked on a big TH-camr the other day. The topic was the nitrogen cycle. It was ok from ammonia to nitrite but then stated the only way for nitrate removal was water changes only AND there was no bacteria that would get rid of nitrate. This is what newbies in the hobby are being told. I tell you this to refer back to the video you did about the money factor being involved. He sells filters and water supplies and other aquarium stuff. I clicked off his channel immediately to never return. I have learned so much and am more confident that I can make things more easy and enjoy keeping more fish. Thank you for educating me. I understand what you teach.
You're not the first person that has stated the same thing. A lot of these TH-cam stations do sell products and therefore they want you to buy products and not really educate yourself on weaning yourself from their products that they sell.
BCB now can be biocenosis clarification basket/bag. It is fun to see how this is growing by creative hobbyists. Way to go Marks. Maybe BCBg for bag lol
The Fluval 15 has been perfect from the start. Plenum and I was impressed with the rear filter, I modified the filter sections to use a bag for a bcb filter. Didn’t have a failure and changed, just was impressed that what I did worked so well
I’m interested to see how you nodded your flex as well. I after a few fails tried the plenum route in mine as well. But because of the bottom inlet am unsure if I have the depth required to get the conditions needed. Plus noticed the back plate allows a little bit of flow underneath it. I’ll admit the tanks been running after about 3 months better than the other 2 previous failed attempts. But am unsure if it’s the plenum or me getting better at managing my water.
Dr. Novak, I am planning on getting a 75 gallon that I plan on planting. I plan on doing a layered substrate with a plenum but I wanted to try to use miracle mud on top of the kitty litter and a black sand cap. What do you think about using a coco fiber mat to catch the sand/mud from falling into the plenum?
Hi Dr. Novak: I need help. I have a 20 gallon set up with a Plenum and HOB filter, monte Carlo carpet in the foreground with a thin border of s. Repens. I have had the brown diatom “algae” after flooding the aquarium after using dry start method. I’m going to try PhosGuard as I heard it can be phosphates and silica as well. Do you have any tips for getting rid of brown diotom?
Maybe he'll send me some photos in the future so I can show everybody how we did it. I know I'm going to do that in my newest aquarium just use the bags only.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums I’m getting ready to setup a 65 gallon community tank. Putting together the u/g filter now. Looking forward for your new setup.
@@1markymark1 Hi, I really want to try these bags, but have a couple of concerns. - will they affect pH? I have the pH at 8 in my aquariums, which is just how I want it. Is there a real risk of a drop due to the removal of ions? - removal of ammonia and nitrites. I have read on some koi forums that these bags also absorb ammonia and nitrite. What happens to the BB that would otherwise feed on this and, subsequently, your cycle should the bag fail? I really want the bag for nitrate and, particularly, phosphate removal. I would probably give them a swerve if they were removing nitrites and ammonia. That could mess with an established bacteria load and cycle.
Wow just came here after discovering the possibility of anoxic filtration. Doesn't fish food also contain fats and small amounts of carbohydrates (both contain carbon). What about if you have a KH of 1 degree in your tap water? All nitrification processes consume carbonate.
You don't need to use declor if u have carbon in the filter iv got an 80ltr bucket that I store tap water in the pH from the tap is 8.2 gh, 80 and kh 40/50 but as iv aqua soil in my tank the kh drops to zero in no time at all which is bad so iv added chalk in my tank this keeps kh at 90 and gh at 120 I add acid buffer to the bucket that lowers the pH from 8.2 to about 7.2 which I prefer I leave the water in the bucket for a week u till I use it for water changes this way its gonna keep the tank more stable
Believe it or not I did a seminar close to 20+ years ago on using chalk for calcium carbonate and saltwater aquariums. The reason I did the seminar as I had two clams that when I bought them were no more than about 2 inches and when I sold the tank they were at least 7 inches in diameter.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums That's good yes I just really like how you can add a sertin a mount and it keeps the kh higher the gh never seems to lower once in my tanks but my pH from the tap just seems to get higher year in year out but the aqua soil n buffer keeps it lower back in 2014 when I got back into keeping fish the pH was 7/7.2 from the tap wish it was back to where it once was but hey how keep up the good work learning a lot from ur videos no other channel can give you this info
I did exactly the same plenum and bcb thing you did on your 40 gal breeder as I also have Ranchu Goldfish and I have 0 Amonia, 0 Nitrite and 0 Nitrate after pouring half a bottle of pellets, 48 hrs food roten yet 0,0,0. I'm impresded.
Can you please share the amount of baking soda to water volume , and dosage? My water out of the tap is close to 6.0 (according to two different test strips). I have to add PH increaser for my hot tub, plus harder to keep the chlorine stable. The last reading I did on my tank, it looks even lower than 6 ( the color doesn’t match the strip colors). Having a hard time getting any ammonia to kick off my tank cycle (no fish yet).
I add one level tablespoon to my 5 gallon top off container. Then I just watch my pH and when that container is just about empty if I need to add more I will add more if I don't I'll leave it alone for the next week.
Thanks to Dr novak I now have many happy healthy fish and shrimps all 19 of my tanks are running the slow moving plenum system and wow it really is amazing thank you kevin
You're welcome. One person just made a comment if you look at the comments that his Discus are laying more eggs than chicken do. And that's all because he's using a Plenum with PCB baskets and/or bags.
I'm going to be doing the same thing except for the BCB I'm actually going to put the kitty litter in bags not make a separate container that way it'll be a lot easier to control and take care of.
I just make a BCB with a ADA like canister filter. There's two video. One in process of making it with material and the other one that's already complete. Hope you can see it and make a comment or review on it.
As much repackaged snakeoil people keep putting in their tank, I don't get the pushback from the hobbyists. I can see why the a company might. Anyway I'm planning a section in my sump, wish me luck.
Thanks for showing my tanks to everyone, I’m from Indians but my son is a manager at PetSmart in Northern Michigan
