How happy these women make me!
Side note: I mean this as a genuine compliment - but does Rebecca Solnit, her voice, intelligence, perceptiveness and personality, remind any Harry Potter fans here, of Luna Lovegood?

Rebecca is so amazing. I love her choice of words and her personality.
It also seems as if Emma’s fame isn’t changing Rebecca’s attitude during the interview at all - and there’s a lot of respect in treating someone as a human despite the fame that can typically change perspectives.
A women worth looking up to!

The first part of the interview reminds me some thoughts of Olga Tokarczuk from her new book "The Tender Narrator" - about dreams of being a writer and "workng with" internal narrators. By the way, she quotes Orwell, too ;) Great thing, I recommend. And of course thank you Emma and Rebecca for these wise conversation!

@0:51 when she says she has avoided husbands, children and day jobs. so avoiding having a job is something most people can not do but spouses and children for sure avoid at all costs. i unfortunately got married in my mid twenties then divorced in my mid thirties. i did however avoid the kids. i've been divorced five years now and in those years i've accomplished so much more than when i was married.

At 31:45 the conversation is about Little Women movie. But I wonder why Emma says 3 different endings to the movie. I've seen the movie and saw only 2 - one showing jo married to Bhaer and other showing her as a published author. What's the third one? Can anyone say?

Rebecca Solnit is a very good writer and reading books and especially her op-ed / opinion pieces in the Guardian is a such a great pleasure. And she like most writers speaks forcefully and in an attractive manner. And she likes tea with milk in the morning!

Speaking from Estonia. We have lot´s of street names named after amazing women aswell as after men. But lately I´ve noticed that all the first names are erased from the street signs. Why did they do that? Is the family names more genderneutral or is it just easier for postoffice workers to find adresses?
Also can´t wait to read all Rebeccas books and to see the "Little Women".
    Amazing interview 💙 👽

Does anyone know where this interview takes place? I mean, the setting looks so cozy, with the shelves of books, all the candles, and the chairs. This would be my go-to place for relaxation. If anyone knows where this is, can you tell me? I'm curious.

i don't know, but had the same reaction. She just said "up the road in Monterey" so I'm thinking ? maybe San Luis Obispo? Bookstores seem so valuable and precious now with the thread that Amazon casts not only on bookstores but all retail. The agora -- where we can meet and have met for centuries -- is so threatened and the result is a somewhat permanent sheltering in place and ordering from amazon, with their fantastic employee practices (not really).

I think the sheer pressure to do something big and at scale defeats the purpose of the many otherwise most noble and ambitious projects. This is where I am almost forced to believe that small is really very beautiful. Instead of wanting to benefit people on the scales of millions. We need very talented, educated and passionate people who can really dedicate their effort to change lives of a small group of people. Or maybe even just one person. I think that is the kind of effort that is needed to restore faith of just one person whose psyche has been sexually brutalised and has lost faith in all things good that he/she once believed in.
Just like a single spark can dispel the most horrendous of darkness. The fate of many people's lives depends upon being able to find just one person that proves all the horrible experiences of their life wrong and restore their faith completely and permanently in all things good they used to believe. Before their traumatic experience/experiences that shattered it all.
So I would recommend to everyone who reads this to use their courage and faculties towards this noble end. Without ever worrying about scale and recognition of any kind. All the best! ♥
