    What's your favorite lens solution? I have tried a 35mm prime equivalent on a m43 on a trip to New Orleans, travelled to China with 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 (back breaker) and looking back I regretting not having a 24-105. Not anymore, I'm keeping this one finally.

      I'm still new to photography, but would you mind doing a video on prime vs kit lenses? Specifically what makes a prime 50mm lens different from a 24-105mm shot at 50mm. Thanks in advance! Hope you keep doing more content like this :)

      @@theroffness Prime lense are simpler in terms of optical constraints for manufacturers. That means that for a similar size/weigth they can build a lense that will have a larger maximal aperture. That large aperture (ex. F2.8, F1.8 or F1.4) gives the option to gather a lot more light without the need of doing long exposures that requires a tripod and will be very useful for low light photography. But also, usually the sharpness of prime lenses is better. This is less obvious for high grade lens like the canon L series (red ring). However, there are some cons of using a prime lens : you have one fixed focal length so you cannot zoom in or out to incorporate or not objects in your composition, you have to walk to change your perspective and frame your subject as you want. Sometimes you just cannot do that because your subject is too big and you cannot step back or maybe your subject is too far away. So if you have multiple prime lense you can get over that issue by switching lenses, but you may miss the action doing so. Both the zooms and the primes are great, but your use will determine which is better for you. Personally I like to take a versatile zoom (24-105) when I travel and use a prime lense if I'm going to do street photos at night. Also, prime lenses can be very small sometimes, like the 40mm F2.8 pancake which is a great lens which is very small/discrete/light and produces very good pictures.

    Same experience. I used to lug around my 5D IV, EF 24-70 2.8, EF 70-200 2.8 and EF 50 1.4. Got the EOS R, bought the RF 24-105 4 as a travel/hiking lens and boy is this lens amazing. Took it on my Japan trip and was happy with it 98% of the time and just missed something 2% of the time. IS compensated nicely for the loss of the 2.8 aperture. The 1.6 crop mode can help with reach and focusing/framing objects that are further out. Considering I lost about 2kg of gear weight, which is more than half of what I used to carry around it's just amazing.

      Thercon Jair thanks for watching and topping by. Nailed it. Every bit of shaving in weight helps soo soo much and you can get back into enjoy the experience of traveling, family and vacationing again. Oh yea the IS at 5 stops can definitely help and eliminate that tripod sometimes. Enjoy man.

    I photograph in restaurants with a lot of low light. Would you recommend using this lens for that? I’m looking for a not too expensive lens, as I just started. But I want lens that does well in a low light environment and gets the background a bit blurry from the subject. Thanks in advance!

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Low light and F4 don't blend well and it really depends on the subject at hand. You say restaurants, are these staged photos where you can add ambient light, quick snaps. For commercial work, I would say yes and you would add lights as needed.

    i make music video, mostly outside. I like blurry background and i am mostly 2-4 m (like portrait) away from the camera. Witch RF lens would you recommend for this?

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a RF 35mm 1.8 might fit the bill or a 50mm 1.2 if you have the funds. If you want that extra blur for your videos. You'll need that ND though.

  • @JaredRibic

    I used to be a 'lens snob' and didn't want to own anything slower than f/2.8 so I viewed the 24-105mm f/4L as an 'amateur lens'.
    However, when shooting in studio situations I'm usually at f/11 or higher, so this would be a great lens for that. In fact it happens to be one of Lindsay Adler's favorite studio lenses too.
    Gotta get a few other lenses first, but this lens has recently been added to my RF lens wishlist.

    Wow! Thank you. I see between EF 24-105 II , EF 24-70 II for 6D and RF 24-105 if I will buy EOS R. Difficult choice. Now have 35/50/100 simple fix lenses.
    If I choose F4 lens I need fix-lens. 35 1.4 or 50 1.2. My 35/2/IS realy works at 2.8. Prime lens must work at open appeture.
    If I Choose 24-70 II no more lense i will need besides 100/2.
    I'm shooting with studio light and reportage in different terms. Fixed lens with normal proportions of human body (35/50) I need for interieor studios with neuteral light and close locations.

    How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F4 24-105mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normal canon seals. All lenses eventually gathers dust particles even canon weather sealed. It happens. It does have an extended barrel so there is that change of dust getting in from there but again normal. I have never had anything crazy gather inside.

    hi Ricky! Just subscribed. I bought an R recently and have been using the adapted EF version II of this lens. Going to trade it in with some other gear and get this. Like the compactness of this vs the EF with adapter.

    • @RickyCheung
      @RickyCheung  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. Yes I agree with the adapter is great alternative but does add bulk and makes any EF glass front heavy on r R. The only glass I use the adapter with are my primes which I think I will be keeping for now. :). The RF 24-105 is a nice little package along with the R.

As a wedding photographer for 11+ years when you are stuck in a church indoors and the priest says no flash you'll wish you had something a lot faster than f4. I just posted a new video up discussing this, check it out.
