    If 74million N of force doesn't make sense for a humanoid to create, forceful enough to basically kill in one hit (like the power of a rocket) and as you've already covered, Captain Falcon is wearing gloves... What if his gloves are coated with a fairly flammable/combustible substance which is what ignites the Falcon Punch? Chlorine Trifluoride for example is able to set fire to almost anything by mere contact, so if Captain Falcon's gloves are coated in a layer of flouride under the Chlorine Triflouride applied, he is safe from the usual chemical reactions but any of his unsuspecting foes become easy, combustible targets for the falcon punch. As a sidenote, maybe that's why his suit also shields his eyes - some of the reaction this chemical causes releases gas that is known to damage the eyes.
    Regardless, excellent episode as usual! :)

    • @89ludeawakening1
      @89ludeawakening1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Only one problem, this theory is instantly debunked by the punch itself. If his gloves were coated in a flammable substance then they would continue to burn after ignited. If anything his gloves are very flame retardant because the flames are extinguished right after he executes the punch.

    • @kerrynoir4129
      @kerrynoir4129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@89ludeawakening1 While I accept the idea in general, I don't think I was clear enough. What I meant to say was that perhaps his gloves have flouride as a coating and the chlorine triflouride on top of that. This is actually how this substance is stored - you coat the container with flouride on the inside for the CT to not react with the container itself. But yeah, I should've probably rearranged my comment to make it clearer.

    • @GreyThing1337
      @GreyThing1337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@kerrynoir4129 That actually makes more sense, that is why he has to spend so long on the wind up as he's secretly applying the flouride coating. Then once he punches it will burn off the flame retardant gloves. This way he also doesn't break every bone in his arm shoulder and much of his body buy throwing a punch with such force. The game f-zero might give some credence to being able to travel at high Gs but would not explain why he wouldn't be destroyed by Newton's Third Law upon contact.

      You don't want to be too unaerodynamic though because otherwise you would decelerate too fast and build up too much heat destroying the capsule. As I understand it re-entry capsuals are actually quite aerodynamic at those speeds, dealing with a shockwave of air rather than normal airflow changes things quite drastically.

    • @chaosmkmk
      @chaosmkmk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not only are they decently aerodynamic to ensure that friction doesn't cause then to get too hot, but it also aids in control. Having a non-aerodynamic pod would cause you to spin and tumble out of control very quickly.

    Great video, Kyle, as always!
    Two thoughts. First, because of equal and opposite reactions, Captain Falcon's body would have to be able to withstand the force of accelerating his fist to that ludicrous speed. Furthermore, that same force would need to be transferred to the ground beneath him, so he would need some solid footing to even get the punch moving. Alternatively, he would have to be incredibly massive everywhere besides his arm to prevent his body from recoiling during the punch. This seems more plausible since a Falcon Punch can be made falling through the air.
    The second point is related to the end of the punch. You described the force imparted supposing the punch lands, but the Falcon Punch is one of the most telegraphed moves in the game. What if he misses? Suddenly, all that force is distributed across his arm as the tensile strength of his bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons fight to stop the fist at the moment of full extension. If his arm couldn't handle those stresses, he might shoot off his arm, either tearing from the shoulder or shredding the whole darn thing, in a suborbital trajectory. It this is a risk, then it would behoove Captain Falcon to resist the temptation to... show us his moves!

    • @Franky_Sthein

    Here is how you get into footnotes:
    Love your show Kyle, been watching for a year and watched all the old episodes. Blessed be Argan oil. You are the perfect combination of brains, beauty, and brawn.
    Now, here is some math:
    When you “break wind”, the mass of that is 0.0371 grams or 0.0000371 kilograms and the sun is 1.989 x 10^30 kilograms, so the sun has the same mass as 5.361186 x 10^34 blasts from behind.
    7.7 billion people in the world, at an average of 14 “events” per day, gives you 107,800,000,000 wind breaking events per day. 3.9347 x 10^13 per year. So multiply that by 13.7 billion years and you get 5.390539 x 10^23 of these that we would produce in the length of the universe.
    So, you divide the number of flatulence occurrences that the sun is composed of by the number we can produce in one universe: (5.361186 x 10^34) / (5.390539 x 10^23)
    And you get: 99,455,471,892.5 universal timespans for the current population to boom boom out the mass of the sun.

    Hey Kyle, love the show. Question: Would there be enough air in front of his fist in that short of a distance to create fire though? I mean you were talking about spaceships and stuff... So would it apply on the fist as well?
    Greetings from Germany

    • @syxxvralrock5759
      @syxxvralrock5759 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Very good point, and would there be enough time for the air to get super heated before the end of his punch to cause such a fire? The reason why it happens to space ships is that they go from the vaccuum of space to trying to penetrate the atmosphere of a rotating planet, it's not sudden combustion like the falcon punch is. [Or for Kirby Mains the Pinecone Punch.] It takes time to re-enter and the temperature builds up over that time.

      So are you guys forgetting about the shrimp? The distance with them is even smaller (although yes more force) but just a cm or 2 is enough to compress the water in front of it to create light. Time isn't really a consideration, in this case, atoms don't care how long they have been compressed for, if you get my meaning.

In the anime, it made it's first (and ONLY) appearance against the final battle against Black Shadow, generating electricity as the two face certain death, with the whole base being set ablaze. Captain Falcon WAS LITERALLY ON FIRE AT THAT VELOCITY as he made the killing blow while accepting his own fate. A true hero.

    Hi! Awesome episode, like always! :D I have a correction about the part with force calculation. It is allright, but assuming that the entire kinetic energy is deposited into the opponent being hit (going into their elastic and plastic deformation, catastrophic failure and so on, from engineering jargon). I believe though, that the fist at this high momentum would just smash straight through the target. Maybe it would need an actual calculation, but hey - just imagine a 15cm wide cannonball coming at you. Maybe we also have to assume that the targets are super tough? Would make sense, actually!

    Hi Kyle,
    Huge fan of the show and love how much I learn from watching you.
    I have some issues on the data you're using to make your hypothesis.
    Firstly, in the n64 version the flame falcon does appear in a single frame but C.Falcon is indeed charging the energy before releasing it. It's visible by the yellow glow he emits and this is even more visible in the latest smash game where energy is concentrating on his fist before being released. So we can assume that the flames are not only produced by his velocity but also some kind of energy released when he hits.
    Another thing is you're only considering his falcon punch move but his other moves also emit flames. If we focus on the falcon kick it's instantly igniting when used so I think we can assume that the suit he's wearing has more to do with the flames than his actual speed.
    And to prove that further let's compare the falcon kick to another character's move, lucario's extreme speed. When performed simultaneously, lucario is moving faster than C.Falcon so if the smash physics apply to all the characters he should burn as well. However he doesn't so it proves that C.Falcon's flames are not a result of his speed but produced by his gear.
    And last point but it's more trivia, according to your "why you don't want superstrenght" video, if C.Falcon was to hit his opponents with that much force, he should be crushed instantly on impact. So either way he doesn't punch them that strongly or because video games.

    If we take into account that this is 74x10^6 N, we also need to consider the *size* of CapFal's fist. A rocket moving at that speed is *very* different to an object that is, at *most* seven inches. A *rocket* moving with that much force is hitting escape velocity. A FIST with that much force isn't just spontaneously igniting, it's making a fiery explosion. That's why anyone hit with CapFal's fist is set on fire and not *just* his fist, it's also why fire surrounds the fist when it's thrown. It looks like a falcon, but with this in mind, what you're actually seeing is the air around CapFal and the fist being ignited and pushed away from him -- on impact, the victim is set alight by a small object with a ludicrously high temperature! Realistically, a Falcon Punch wouldn't just explode the target, it'd kill the user. CapFal should be getting... like, what, 300% damage every time he swings his fist, and meanwhile, Charizard is the only one that takes damage from a similar attack? What's fair about that?!
    Kyle, please demand answers from Nintendo via the use of that giant superweapon you totally (don't) have.

    Taking these numbers:
    Force = 74 MN
    Area of a fist (approx.) = 60 cm^2
    One can get a pressure = Force/area = 12.3 GPa.
    Using Newton's approximation of impact depth for fast moving objects: Depth = Length of projectile * (Density of a projectile / Density of a target)
    Assuming you are punching a face, density of a fist and density of a face are really close, so the fist won't go further than its own length (as you have mentioned in a video).
    Given the speed and contact pressure, the fist and the opponents face would probably liquify and explode from the shockwave.
    P.S. As I use to say: "Everything is like a liquid, when it's moving fast enough."

    Here’s a project for you that I came up with earlier “Can Darth Vader survive in outer space with his respirator?”

    Huge fan of the show! One slight thought/correction: you calculated that the mass portion of the punch's equation was simply the mass of Captain Falcon's fist, but as a trained fighter, he wouldn't simply snap his arm out, but would rather engage most of his body in the move, starting by planting his foot firmly and basically acting as an enormous spring (or mantis shrimp punching mechanism). He would then lunge forward and essentially put all his weight behind this punch. I don't have exact figures, but I imagine this would greatly increase the available energy due to having far more mass behind the same size impactor, as well as make it slightly more conceivable for such a punch to be thrown. Granted, this would still require insanely overpowered muscles, bone, and skin, but that should just make Falcon even MORE intimidating!

    When using the distance in the Work equation, should you have taken into account Captain Falcon's forward lunge during the Falcon Punch? (Although it probably makes negligible difference)
