I definitely agree with that, I hear a little Killers influence as well(maybe?). Just started listening to Sam Fender when he was opening for Liam Gallagher.
His biggest influence after Springsteen is Jeff Buckley. That’s the closest artist to him vocally. I also read somewhere he learned his vocal style from Jeff.
What does it say that I'm 63 and I immediately connected with Seventeen Going Under... Sam is a once in a generation artist who's lyrics speak of the melancholy of youth and capture a genuine feeling a ton of people can relate to, I think he's brilliant.
Although he (thankfully) doesn't try to dress like Springsteen, you can hear big influences right through his music. The style of lyrics even to the Max-like snare. He does a few Springsteen covers live which are great and with his own twist. Really refreshing to hear something with a bit more imagination in the charts and mainstream radio.
Yeah I can hear the Springsteen influence all over his music, that note he hits on the last repeat of the lyric '17 going under' at the end of the song is pure Springsteen. He even overtly references Springsteen with 'Mary' in the lyrics of Last to Make It Home, which I'm certain isn't a coincidence given the signifcane of the name in Springsteen's songs
Just listened to his song and watched the video and it knocked the wind from my sails - so much heart, so much depth - I'm the next generation and I really felt this pain. Thanks for introducing us Justin! xx
In the US and this is the first I’ve heard. Love this song, really powerful raw lyrics. I’ve been bouncing around listening to more songs of his. Thank you for introducing me to this!
I am also in the US and just starting to check him out. To my ear, he carries a very heavy debt to the Killers Sam's Town era. I don't mean that in a negative way. It is a very American, anthemic style. Yearning and chiming away. His music and songwriting is moving.
I appreciate your deep knowledge of music composition. "Ostinato" is a new term for me. I hear that device used all the time but had no idea it has a name. Thank you sir!
It’s a cracking album. First 5 or 6 tracks are gold. Also, I met you at a festival a couple of years ago, backstage. You were very cool and chatted with my boy, who was 16 at the time. Thanks 🙏
He is HUGE in America. He writes much like Springsteen and many other “heartland” type artist. So he is resonating here very well. Great video and analysis!
You should really hear 'Dead boys' if you haven't already, he's from north Tyneside a stone's throw away from myself in Sunderland a pretty bleak part in terms of development and opportunities compared to the south and the song is about the high levels of male suicide, especially up here in the northeast. The video to go with the song and the intro song "Prelude" they did for the song (both on his on TH-cam I believe) are just beautiful. You should also check out another not as popular (outside of central and Eastern Europe) British pop band, 'Hurts'. Their best two albums (in my opinion) are their first (Happiness. 2010) and their latest (Faith. 2020)
Both his albums are worth a listen, he has a lovely way with words...and can draw you right into his lived experience. I took my 12-year-old son to his very first gig in March, to a Sam Fender concert, The Point Depot Dublin, 12000 people, all young, all losing their shit, beautiful really, you only ever get to attend your first convert once, my son loved it, lost his shit and has stolen both of my CDs to his bedroom, job done.
Love this video definitely love your raw reaction! Have been a fan since early 2018 I saw him live in Shields and fell in love, he’s definitely going places, so proud x
I was blown away by Sam Fender's "Dead Boys" video when I first saw it. At a time when pop music had reached an all-time low - nothing but electronic sounds, autotune, and stupid lyrics - here's this good-looking kid with a modern-sounding rock band singing (with a great voice) about the high number of suicides with kids from his hometown. And that was his FIRST single. I'm glad to see he's went on to enjoy the success he deserves. Justin I will definitely follow your channel. Hot Cakes is one of my favorite albums!
Love Sam fender, only caught on upon the release of seventeen going under. The lyrics are real, and I think that's what popular music needs right now. The lyric 'I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now' is a massive tiktok hit with the whole world sharing their stories as pertains to that lyric. For the people this lad
Yeah Springsteen is probably his biggest inspiration actually. Sam refers to himself as an "Americana artist with a British voice" and also covers Bruce as well as using Born to Run as his walkout song. I think Bruce is his favourite Also his new album cover is literally designed to look like Bruce's album, Nebraska. His songwriting is definitely inspired by springsteen, they have that same detailed poetic gritty lyrics style
I thought it was weird how Hawkins essentially rubbished Springsteen and then went on to wax lyrical about Fender's poetic lyrics. Springsteen is one of the greatest poets in music.
Subscribed tonight after listening to The Darkness debut album on repeat in my car for the last week or so. Still one of the best Albums anyone can buy!
Loving the videos Justin. Got me listening to Sam Fender ..Good sound! Where have I been? Don't have the excuse of being on tour! Have always loved The Waterboys ..very clever intricate lyrics. The Whole of the Moon is such a beautiful song. Booked long ago for the tour, be there on Wednesday 17th at Brighton Dome ..as I keep telling everyone 🙃 exceedingly excited to see you perform live again, you are one artistic talent, amazes me every time. Wish I could come to every performance 💖
I almost always agree with you and also learn from you .. but my parents raised me on Springsteen and Sam reminds me of him. And I love both. Thank you for teaching me about Ostinato! ✌🏻
I too was unfamiliar with Sam's work, and the term 'Ostinato' ...though my best friend had an Austin Alegro when we were 17, so there's a tenuous link.
Play god and all is on my side are my favorites !! Saw him in 2019 in Manhattan in a small venue which sadly won’t be the case too long since he’s getting traction to be like the likes of the kooks and two door cinema club type of venues in Manhattan. I play the guitar because of him and Ben Howard to which Ben Howard’s manager discovered Sam Fender in a pub in Newcastle
Love the videos Justin. Can you do a review of my local new up and coming band Nothing But Thieves from Southend Essex. The recently sold out the O2 Arena in London
I’ve also just discovered him after seeing Get you down on Jools. I love Springsteen and he’s openly a big fan and you can hear that in his music. Looking forward to seeing you and the band in Stoke in December 👍🏻
A SF song came on the radio the other day and it was one of those moments where you know the artist but can't remember who it is. At first I thought War On Drugs then it clicked who it actually was. Was good to hear you mention WOD, they are a band worth checking out, but there's only a couple of tunes I like but they are really good.
I'm liking the content, trying to shed light on current music i's refreshing. As far as this guy i immediately hear springsteen, but also bruce hornsby kinda lyrical scenery.
Hi Justin, pleased you mentioned the similarity to The War on Drugs, I'm a big fan of Sam's and The War on Drugs...and The Darkness of course. Really enjoying your content so far!
love your channel Justin. You're like the English version of Rick Beato ;) looking forward to seeing you in cork next year and if you have time make sure to visit Kerry. looking forward to your next episode
Justin! Fan of The Darkness from the early days, and I’ve got to say it’s nice just listening to you talking about music, being the calming, humorous guy you are, and being a casual guitar player it’s nice seeing you support your views with a few strums here and there - I like that kind of stuff. Keep it up mate, if you can bear it! As for Sam, likewise I know f-all about him, but thanks for your recent Greta Van Fleet video - somehow they passed me by too. Ps. Nice to see you making TH-cam videos Justin. My first gig was seeing you at Bournemouth (BIC) in 2004 for your Christmas gig. Brilliant night, just about worth getting tinitus for. ✌️
Sam Fender is one of the best talents to emerge in the last couple of years. I saw him in 2019 when he was doing O2 Academy venues..fantastic live..seeing him again this week where he’s now sold out Newcastle Arena and others in the country. Yeah he’s openly referenced Springsteen as a major influence. Elton John keeps banging on about him as well as they’re now big pals!! How’s that work?? Can’t do him any harm.
Sam is also doing another Bruce Springsteen thing, bringing back the saxophone solo into 'pop' music. I love Justin's work and know Lowestoft well, but Sam has been all over the charts since the summer and it's difficult not to know much about him.
Sam Fender is a huge fan of Spruce Stringbean, he got into his music through his older brother who is also a huge fan of his. So glad you’ve done a video on Sam Fender, he’s one of my favourite solo artists around at the minute. To have 2 No.1 albums in the week of there release is incredible especially in the current musical landscape. He’s immensely talented and I’m sure he’s going to get better!!
The ‘Geordie Springsteen’ moniker is actually the perfect label for SF. He’s a brilliant lyricist and a great player. I love both his albums but apart from a few tracks on Seventeen Going Under it already sounds like he’s progressing musically away from his Boss obsession…
I'm only just getting to know Sam Fender's music now... but I had to pause your video and comment when you said that you think he's a mix of Waterboys and War on Drugs these are exactly the two bands I thought of! THanks for the heads up on that Chris. An interesting listen - defs a similar sequence. Has that 'anthem' vibe. I listened to the WODs cover version too. Great tune!
Excellent videos, Justin. Great fun. I would love to see you talk more about the Pignose guitar you used in a live performance of 'Love is Not The Answer' a few years back. Even though his big picture was on the wall at HMV in Newcastle straight away it clicked with me because it was different what was around at that time obviously bought the album. 3:32 i have a feeling the ostinato trend in pop music comes from hiphop, i.e. fairly monotone rapping over changing chords and then singers trying to copy that vibe
His sound is like a mix between The War on Drugs and Springsteen, seasoned with Geordish charm and roughness. Killer artist
I definitely agree with that, I hear a little Killers influence as well(maybe?). Just started listening to Sam Fender when he was opening for Liam Gallagher.
