    I have a 1978 D150 that I bought last October...I drove it from a neighboring state and it died when I got home. Fathers Day i got it running again and have been driving it every since, but I replaced everything on the top end minus heads, an aluminum radiator and all the elected leaders electrical ignition parts.
    I intend to do the suspension, I have headers for it, but over the winter I want to tear the motor apart and install the goodies with the stock bottom end just freshened up.
    This is a job I'm tackling this week after installing motor mounts and still need to install the transmission mount which up do after this is done!
    Great videos and information!

    If you’re willing to use the silicone pan gasket, felpro typically includes the plastic pins that will not only align the pan but hold it in place so you can install all other bolts. Super convenient and easier than having to make your own. Great video friend. Keep em coming!

    This is a great video. I have a 96 Dodge Ram (2nd gen) with the 360 (5.9) that also has a leak from the rear main seal.
    There are a couple of small differences that I know about but this is a fantastic walk threw on how to do this job. I am also, like you, replacing the oil pump while I am in there. I have a few more miles (175k) and figure it is just wise while I am in there.

    Good job. With that many miles, I might've replaced all of the rod bearings while it was open.
    But also, I might've had the cylinder heads off too, then pushed all of the piston/rods out, used a deglazing hone on the cylinders, then replaced all of the piston rings.....I might have to do that while the heads are off right now....my 318's #4 cylinder was lower compression than the rest, and a wet test shot it waaaay up! 😆

Also my rear seal is pretty much plastic at this point and isn't letting go 😭 hopefully lifting the motor helps! Thanks for all the information! I put a new Radiator and electric fan on my 89 D250 and after I was done and fired it up a growing pool of oil was under it as I looked for Radiator leaks. I heard it could be done without engine removal but got stuck at getting it out. Did some looking and saw where the engine mounts could be loosened so when I get back at it I'll hopefully get it wrapped up. Glad you replaced the pump as they're cheap and good insurance. In case anybody is curious never use a highflo pump as it will starve the crank.

    Did this same job on a '68 Fury with a 318 last summer. Had no leaks or nothing, it all started with pulling the threads out of the block on one of the timing cover studs and it just started snowballing from there😂

      Thanks so much! Yes it looks very intimidating. I delayed doing this for over a year because I was scared I would mess it up. Like many things in life, everything was achievable by doing research and taking my time once I started.
      What’s not in the video are numerous times I stopped and triple checked stuff because I was nervous of screwing it up.

      @@JasonExplainsThings yes I hear that for sure. Mine has a stuck oil pressure relief valve that caused the rear seal to leak. Going to change oil pump and rear seal and then re-gasket. Beautiful truck btw.

    @liambeckemeyer2499 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So I recently did this on my 78 D150...I found that on the 318 you don't have to raise the engine at all to get the oil pan out. I'm not sure if it's simply a difference in engine size or a difference between the 70s and 80s. Either way it made it a lot easier for me.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Use a one piece silicone rubber gasket for a Magnum. Buy a piece of cheap thread all and cut it up into at least a half dozen studs. Buy a 42 dollar 1994 magnum pan from Rock Auto use a magnum pickup. Goop the mating surfaces liberally with RTV on the ends and sparingly on the sides. I have been using those old LA cork and rubber 4 piece sets since 1970 and never again . I did this yesterday Free ,I say Free at last

    Did you use black RTV to put in the new rear main seal

      It’s shown in the video. From what I remember I put some black RTV in the spots notes in the manual.

    For those who may be new to this stuff, Disconnect your battery before you go to remove the starter.

    To prime the oil pump before reassembly I use Vaseline to pack between the rotors so it won't lose prime when the oil drips back out of it over time before restart.

    About how long did this take to complete? About to do this on a 88 w250. Also doing the trans pump gasket and seal! Wish me luck!

      Good luck! 🫡 It took us 2.5 work days but that was filming the entire process as well… which slows everything way down.

    Did you have any problems lifting from the balancer? I’m doing it but I have my balancer off. Was just going to lift on the crank nub with a block of wood between. Most people I ask tell me not to lift from the balancer/ crank just wondering why.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weird, the manual I followed specifically said to lift it that way.

    Did you only prime the pump while off the engine? I've seen folks priming via pump drive and not sure what's the difference

      Bummer. There are a few other gaskets I still need to replace... but this job tackled all the bad ones.

    Hi Jason,
    I have an 1986 D-150 5.2L- can you tell me how long it took to do the complete repair ? I have no garage on my own and need to rent something . So far I did my repairs outside..Many tghanks and greetings from Germany. Tom

      It's hard to guess because I was shooting a video which slows everything down. I'd say for a first time job it will take you at least a full day, maybe two. And greetings from Washington State! :-)

      Stock carb... haven't messed with it much other than replacing the idler arm (which broke).

    Rob here... I've made dozens of inquiries about door swapping. Will the door hardware from an 84 fit in an 85 door shell. I think dodge doors are the same from 81 to 89 but not sure. Some help figuring that out would be greatly appreciated on finishing my w350 project.

    Not a mechanic but am a machinist. I have a lot of experience hydraulic cold straightening. .0015 filler gage is a crazy 🤪 thing to do. The mill that made the lid is like huh bro?
