  • On a recent business trip to Kyoto I had the time for short portrait session down in the Pontocho/Kiyamachi district. For this shoot I was using my vintage Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens on my Nikon Zf camera and so used manual focus the whole time. Great fun! And I hope you enjoy.

    Very impressive work… did you use only available light, or did you bring along a speedlight or LED to light her face?
    In similar circumstances, I’m sure I would have struggled with shaping the light properly to create all those flattering shadows in the final images. I would have definitely also struggled with colour-cast issues, I’m sure. I’d love to see a video talking about your techniques in that regard. The final scene was so dark at first and you’ve even dialled in negative exposure compensation… all this is to say I’m blown away by the final product 🙂🍻

      I was only using the “natural light” available to me, but the 1.4 really lets you push your camera pretty far. That last screen was crazy crazy dark by the time we got there but just did what I could with slowing down the shutter and cranking the ISO. If you were to look closer those shots are a little noisy, but in the end it kind helps the vibe.

      @@jasonhalaykophotography super-impressive work and very inspiring. Using the Zf has pushed me to experiment with manual focus lenses for the first time, and the experience has been great. I’ll have to look into some of the vintage Nikkor lenses… the images they can produce look beautiful. Thanks for sharing your work with us!

      Don’t know what it is about the Zf boy shooting with old manual lenses is so fun with it, way batter than on my Z9.
      Found my great grandmothers nifty 50 when I was home so will do a video with that as well soon!
      Good luck with you shooting!!

    Beautiful work, photos were knocked out of the park. Model as gorgeous. I see you were using ISO over 12k and problems with noise?
    When using vintage lenses the focus area is normally the middle area, any issues with miss manual focus?
    Thank you in advance

    • @jasonhalaykophotography
      @jasonhalaykophotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks a ton!! The noise in the images at the end there is noticeable when looking close on my computer but seems not to bad when the images are used in the video or posted to instagram, etc. All personal preference there.
      I am not the best with manual focus, but I found I did quite well with the Zf so no real issues at all.
      thanks again for the great comment!!

    Very good video. Loved the photos and the model also did great.
    I'm looking to buy the Nikon Zf for similar kinds of photos (low light urban portraits) and this is precious information.
    Would you be interested in doing a similar video but using the camera's auto-focus? I've found only one video with the Nikon Zf + 50mm 1.8 S doing low light portraits.

    Love this - especially the shots low to the water in the alley! Really cool to see how good the IQ is with vintage manual focus lenses on the ZF.
    Of all the focus aids (peaking, zooming in, eye detect) which do you use most with manual old lenses like this?

    • @jasonhalaykophotography
      @jasonhalaykophotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@japandrew thanks!! Ya, that last alley was great, happy I could find it in the end, haha.
      For this shoot I was actually just going by feel for the focus. Didn’t really use peaking or zooming in or anything as I didn’t want to kill the flow of the shoot. Didn’t get 100% of the shots, but that’s part of the fun of using old lenses.
