    EasyCanvas Pro is pretty good now. I was surprised at how little latency there was, just make sure to use a PC with a beefy CPU to get as little lag as possible.

    I’ve been using Duet as my ipad-as-additional-monitor for a few years now; the wired version was @ten dollars US and works seamlessly with my personal Laptop and my very-locked-down work laptop. Great product that just works, and isn’t overpriced. They have a wireless version, but I can’t use that with my work machine. But it’s never been a problem. Recommended!

    My guess that wiggle mostly caused by static. I notice the same jittery lines every time i draw with ipad plugged in, whether it’s charging or connected to PC. Definitely not the best idea using device when it’s charging, but I was doing that mostly for troubleshooting.

    I don't really get the point of Astropad/Luna anymore. For the same price they're asking, you can get an XP-Pen or Huion tablet and they're reliable and not subscription based.

    • @tungstenivoxide2407
      @tungstenivoxide2407 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an artist, but I can see an immediate reason in that you get to use tech you're already familiar with in a more convenient way. Plus, if you already have an iPad and carry it with you, then bringing an extra drawing tablet is excessive.
      At $129 for the dongle which appears to run worse than with a cable (but could get better with more software updates) it does seem too expensive. I'm not super well versed in drawing tablets, but you certainly can't get one with as nice a screen as the iPad for $129. This may seem like an unfair comparison, but this product is aimed at someone who already has the iPad.
      The corded option with Astropad seemed pretty solid even in the beta state presented in the video. Selling the software for say $30-40 would be a fair price for the functionality.

    • @kalvineldridge
      @kalvineldridge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tungstenivoxide2407 1) it's not tech you're more familiar with, though. Luna is a screen mirror and Astropad adds a new interface to your tablet. So any previous familiarity of the iPad is pretty pointless outside of "pinch to zoom." This isn't a huge learning curve, but it's not like a drawing tablet is some mystical device either. The whole thing, both astropad and tablets, are designed to get out of the way so you can draw. It seems a dedicated tablet will do it better for cheaper. (i'll get to the whole price thing in a minute)
      2) The dongle has been around for a long while now (2017), if they haven't sorted out the issues by now, they're not going to. Sure the iPad has a nice screen, but for $200 you can get the Kamvas 12 from huion (or XP Pen Artist 12). So for $70 extra you get a reliable and HD screen. The iPad's screen isn't amazing enough to default to that for your drawing. And it doesn't matter if you already have an iPad anyway, cause you're not saving anything. You need to buy something EXTRA here to make it work in this fashion regardless. So you can buy the Dongle/Astropad or a Tablet.
      3) Astropad is beta only for Windows. It's been around much longer for Mac, which I've used. I really liked it, but I didn't continue when they went subscription model. While I agree that the software would be fair priced at $30-$40 (actually I'll even say $50-$60 one time), it's not. $80 every YEAR is steep. And remember, photoshop itself, at it's cheapest plan, is $120 a year. So...every year you're paying $200 just to make photoshop work --fairly well-- on an iPad.
      So, all told, first year with
      Astropad, Luna, and Photoshop: _$330 (then $200/year)
      Kamvas 12 and Photoshop:______$320 (then $120/year)
      Bottom line: the ONLY benefit here is the iPad's screen....but is it REALLY worth all that extra money?

    • @divya11114
      @divya11114 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kalvineldridge I agree with you mostly. But as a 3D artist, I can see the benefit of Astropad in certain use cases. First of all, I mostly use zBrush for modelling and thankfully it's a one-time pay software. So, a user who is not using subscription based software like Photoshop is going to benefit more. And I condemn piracy, but there are people out there who are using pirated versions of Photoshop, so it doesn't cost them anything.
      Secondly, having to carry an extra device matters more when you're travelling. I personally kind of lived a nomadic life before covid, and was on constantly on travel trips for the better parts of the year. For people like me at that time (before covid), every extra gear you needed to carry mattered. And carrying a tablet (even a small one) didn't made sense when it's just extra weight most of the time expect when I have to draw. But since I have my iPad, I can draw whenever and wherever I am, and don't need to connect to my laptop if I'm just drawing. And an iPad can do a lot more than just allow you to draw. Therefore, it makes more sense to carry an iPad with me than a graphic tablet. And having the ability to turn my iPad into a graphic tablet to do some 3D modelling using zBrush with sidecar or Astropad is an added bonus. I do have a Huion Kamvas 20 inch graphic tablet at home, which I use when I'm at home, but even if I had a 12inch small portable tablet, I would choose to carry my iPad while travelling at any given day. Don't get me wrong, I love my Huion Kamvas, and do agree that a dedicated graphic tablet gets the job done much more efficiently than my iPad when I'm working on zBrush for client projects. But for what I do, my iPad can also get the job done (albeit with some minor frustrations here and there), and it doesn't affects the overall quality of the final result for the client.

    My only issue with astropad/project blue is how you select colors in photoshop. Like in procreate and most ipad apps you have option to long press to bring up color picker. In astropad thats not an option so you either have to manually select colors with eye dropper or you have to use their built in on screen keyboard.

      How are you liking your laptop studio? I just bought the new one but the screen's response time is so noticeably bad, even when browsing the web or scrolling on VS code, that I'm thinking of returning it and getting an iPad pro + a laptop instead... I thought one device would be perfect but the screen feels terrible to use. Were you able to use a mac as a second screen?

      to do some work while your real drawing tablet/display is away from you, to draw like that non-stop I think is just masochistic :)

      @@p0stezz but you can work on the ipad without using your laptop?? Procreate is a wonderful program so like why bother connecting your laptop?

      @@EvaCampbell well I draw as a hobby and procreate is perfectly capable even though I prefer CSP and sketchbook.But for work I use couple of 3d programs so the Ipad is useless.I tried all these programs to turn the ipad into a drawing display but the experience is still worse than using even non-display tablet.
      I got best results with easycanvas for ios and superdisplay for android.

    It is pricey but a one time purchase, right?

    Considering the performance of these software solutions is just TERRIBLE compared to an actual display/tablet says to me there’s no point going this way at this time. Well, for artists at least. For a casual user looking for a 2nd display, maybe. I’ll stick to Procreate on my iPad and a cheap Wacom for my PC.

    Still waiting for the day when tablets will gain hdmi in support so that we can use it as a portable display. That's the easiest solution.

      Wired sidecar is basically that though. It uses the usb c for video like hmdi c monitors and for the pen data back.
