Usman, Izzy, Valentina, Nunez, Poatan, Jones, Zhang (yes, even Poatan, Jones & Zhang), Brandon Moreno, Aljo, Figueiredo, Charles, Alex... when you started to have a hard time against the younger opponents arriving on mainstage, or, worse/better yet, when you started to lose, you need to start thinking about retiring; you don't find excuses: It was off the couch; I was having some mental issues; I was having some physical issues; they cheated me out of my landslide victory; I was fighting in a division I was not supposed to be even remotely competitive in, etc., ad nauseam. Valentina has an even LOWER probability of winning against Grasso, compared to the first two, in a third fight. Usman's 4th fight against Leon would be worse than his 2nd and 3rd fights. Aljo isnn't going to win against Sean at 135. Nor Figueiredo at 125. Tom Aspsinal would bulldoze over JJ, because in addition to being naturally bigger than Jones, Aspinall has elite boxing, elite wrestling, and elite BJJ... he's also much faster and 6 - 8 years younger. JJ is smart enough NOT to say he's beating Tom, if they FOUGHT. Can't say that, because Tom will smile and say it like Leon did (on the Islam, Khamzat, and Shavkat offering, for the UFC 300): "Let's go" .... and then Jones would be embarrassed: if you're saying you're beating an up & comer and HE says, "Okay, let's find out..." you can't, then, turn around and say, "Yeah, but you haven't earned the right to fight me." As Khabib wisely said: if you want to retire "at the top of the game," you literally need to retire immediately or, at most, just defend the belt once or twice and retire, while you still are the top of your game. You don't keep fighting for years and, then, slowly start to have a tough time, and, then, start to lose... and say: I just made some mistakes; but I will fix my mistakes and return to being what I was like 2, 4, & 7 years ago, when I was just entering my prime. That's not reality.
Yep. Time ticks. Things change. I guess it’s hard to switch off the stubborn determination and self-aggrandising that got you to the top in the first place, it’s too baked-in. Lucas worried about volk more than volks wife.
Damn, you're fast tf
7:00 I doubt Volk is taking Ilia down, he couldn’t have had a more perfectly timed TD on Ilia in the first round & yet Ilia instantly stuffed it, Ilia was off balance & everything & still stuffed it & made it look easy.
Background kinda sick
Pro fighters always tred a thin line between self belief and self delusion.
Volk is very clearly on the side of self delusion. Everyone in the UFC except his own team see where this is going. His ego is waaaaay too big for his own good.
