- In this video I discuss why Alexander Volkanovski should avoid a rematch with Ilia Topuria following his KO loss at UFC 298. Although Volk deserves it, taking a rematch will ruin his legacy and I think he should retire, or opt for only easy fights. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

It needed to be said. It’s not that volk can’t win a rematch, but the odds are horrible for him.
Respectfully, Aldo is still the GOAT of the FW. 9 straight tittle defenses to five isn't comparable. Using Aldo lost to Conor, Max and Volk, isnt an argument when Conor was the only one who beat him in his actual prime. People act like Prime is universal, Aldo is perfect example of a fighter peaking early. He was a world champion at 23, fighting elite opponents at the age of 21. When Aldo was World Champion, Volk had yet even been training MMA. Aldo loss to Merab was his first loss to a fighter not #1 contender or Champion in 17 years. By the looks of it, Merab could end of being a champion at BW.
Im sorry, Volk may be the better fighter simply of the basis on sport evolution, but he certainly wasn't more dominant not a greater champion than Aldo was. Facts are the facts.
As a Volkanovski fan, I wanna see a rematch, but I want Volkanovski to take 9 months minimum off. If he loses again and his competitiveness won’t go away, let him fight some low ranked guys at lightweight until he’s 40. That way, he can keep his GOAT status at featherweight.
I predicted that round 1 Ilia was going to struggle a bit as he tries to get used to Volk and get his timing down, but by the second round he'd figure him out, back him up against the fence and knock him out just like in the Jai Herbert fight. Both fights were extremely similar and Ilia honestly reminds me a lot of Anderson Silva with the way he downloads opponents weaknesses early and then exploits them. Volk's biggest shot was this first fight between them, but the element of surprise is gone and in the rematch Ilia won't need a round to figure him out. It's mma and anything could happen but if they fight again there is a huge chance Ilia will finish him in the first round.
The people calling for the rematch right away remind me of the people who lose at something and immediately say, "again!"

THE NUMBER OF THEIR AGE IS TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. Stop talking about Aldo's age when he lost, he started professional MMA in 2004 and lost to Connor in 2015, he was 11 years and 26 fights into his MMA career when that fight happened. Volk was 11 years and 30 fights into his career when he fought Topuria. They'd had the same length career when they lost. When a fighter starts their career is more important than their age.
Also you say Aldo fought bums. Volk's best wins are Mendes, Aldo and Korean Zombie all years past their peaks. Ortega and Yair, both mediocre fighters with massive holes in their games who would struggle to make top 10 in either the 135 or 155 divisions.
His only great wins are against Holloway who stylistic might just be a very good match-up for him.
If you think Volk is the GOAT that's fine but be honest about the facts and give Aldo the respect he deserves. There's no fighter who has beat as make top level fighters in the sport than Aldo even when he was past his best.

You keep mentioning the KO loss 4 months ago, that had nothing to do with Saturday. Ilia is known for his power, that right hook would have knocked the entire division out with the exception maybe of Max and Ortega, those probably would only get dropped, but they would still be susceptible to the TKO.

He might never get the belt again. Now he's in a similar position to Max. He should take a year off and rematch if he really wants it or just move up and fight some cans after a good rest. Eventually more FW's will marinate over time anyway.

the issue we see this year especially in MMA is that if you circle out (your prone to leg kicks and head kicks as you jive one direction)
and if u refuse to circle out your only other option is to move forward and backwards in and out like a karate point fighter
but if your opponent understands how to step through a feint and switch lead legs they can ALWAYS make that distance moving forward quicker than you can do it moving backwards

Lucas you talked too fast. You're were too quick, to say Volk GOAT, Volk > Aldo. Aldo still had a better run at FW than Volk and he also had a very impressive run in another weight class after his prime was gone. Basically he did everything Volk did but in a more impressive way.
It was just a matter of time before Volk was going to lose and people would slowly realize that, as of now, Aldo is still in front of Volk in GOAT list. Ofc it's impossible to predict the future. Volk could very well come back from this loss. He could beat Topuria and get another 3 defences. It's unlikely but not impossible.

I get he said he would try more techniques before getting KO'd, but he was winning each clinch (not the pocket) exchange with knees and winning on separation. He needed to make that adjustment immediately after rd1 to muscle Topuria, but Topuria is just that guy anyways. Shame
Volk IQ is great, probably even better than Topuria. Its just that Topuria is a better overall fighter. Volk played rugby, Topuria has started wrestling at 4. Volk was right, theres levels and Topuria simply is at the very top of it. Good chance Topuria beats Volk even when fighting at Volks peak.

Volk prime is better than anyone at their prime, no one is beating prime Volk (robberies don't count). Volk had easy win here over Topuria only if he allowed himself proper recovery time which he didn't and was again weakened Volk, like kid Goku compared to all other Goku forms.

This is the correct take, at the end of the day the sport is very variable, there are obviously higher percentage chance outcomes but some people get bad beats, some people lose to a guy then knock him out in the next fight (Adesanya vs Periera). I learned that there is no predicting outcomes in this sport, which is why betting on it is also really dumb.
